Chestnutkit slowly meandered around camp, pondering whether she should try to flee out the camp entrance or not. The she-kit was aching with boredom and yearning to go out and explore. She had managed to figure out the scents and names of certain types of herbs already, just from the few moments she had been able to sneak into the herb store and have herself a look. But she craved to know more, and a traipse through the woods would do her some good to sort some things out... But perhaps she needed a lookout.
A small and lithe tortoiseshell and white she-kit had just made her way out of the nursery, her pelt neatly groomed and she was ready to face the day. Glancing around, her eyes quickly settled upon Chestnutkit who seemed to be almost impatiently pacing her away around the area. "What's on your mind," Rosekit asked, approaching her denmate and flicking her tail in greeting.
At the inquiry she turned to look at the other kit and her eyes brightened. "I want to go out," She mewed softly, glancing around as she said so, "And I need some help. Are you in?" Her head tilted slightly as she asked, an almost expectant look on her face. Chestnutkit really didn't know many kittens that didn't yearn for an adventure out of camp, so she was confident Rosekit would accept her invitation.
Green eyes glancing around to make sure no one was paying attention, she nodded. “Sure,” she added a slight bit of excitement tinting her tone. It had been a while since she’d gone out of camp on an adventure, and she wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity.
"Great!" She squeaked, excitement coursing through her. Another glance around camp gave her fresh surveillance, and she noticed with delight that it was quite empty around, for the time being. Urgently she whispered to Rosekit. "It looks like there isn't a lot of activity right now. Follow me and keep your eyes peeled!" With that she began to head nonchalantly to a secret exit she had been shown by another kit.
The small torti nodded, a look of determination falling across her features as she began to follow her den mate. She glanced around quickly, and nearly jumped out of her skin when she saw a warrior round a corner towards them. However, they were clearly busy with something else and padded right past the two of them like they didn’t exist. Heart still racing, she let out a small breath. “That was close!” Rosekit whispered.
A short giggle escaped her in response, feeling a rush of adrenaline through her pelt. She did not let this slow her and she spotted her goal with glee. Her eyes flitted around momentarily as they approached, surveying the area around them. Seeing their chance, Chestnutkit moved swiftly through the exit and was gone from sight in an instant.
Rosekit's dark viridian gaze scanned the clearing one last time before she quickly darted out after Chestnutkit, and it was almost as if a welcome wind of freedom was there to great her. "We did it!" she squeaked, still trying to keep her voice down since they were so close to the boundary of the camp. It would be a shame if they were caught now.
Chestnutkit had a hard time keeping her excitement down as well, and another short giggle escaped her. She turned to look at Rosekit with mischief gleaming in her eyes, and fought to keep her tail from lashing about wildly. Her voice was barely a whisper as she spoke. "Yes! That usually goes far less successfully..." Her words trailed off as excitement ebbed and she began racking her brain for ideas as to where to go from here. She remembered from her camping trip with her family that there were some good herbs amongst the trees, so she supposed that would be a good place. "Follow me."
With that she turned and began creeping her way quietly away from camp, hard on the lookout for clanmates near the camp entrance.
Rosekit didn't know nearly as much as her denmate seemed to about the world outside the camp. As she followed Chestnutkit, she tried to search her memory for a reason that the other she-kit might know so much. She vaguely remembered a time when Chestnutkit and all of her siblings had disappeared from the nursery for a while, perhaps that is where they went? With an internal shrug and a mental note to ask when they were further away from the camp, she let the scents around her flood her senses. "Wow.." she whispered, amazed at all the different things that were around them.
The she-kit was certainly lucky she'd had the opportunity to learn a bit of the territory at such a young age, and she certainly felt a bit superior to the other kits due to this - though she wasn't one to boast and be overall obnoxious with such feelings. In any case, she was sure to be an apprentice soon anyway. She'd done her time in the nursery and was quickly approaching her promotion any day now. The thought filled her with pride as she carefully led Rosekit to the cluster of trees she remembered, trying her best to stick to the undergrowth to avoid detection.
Once they were a safe distance from camp's perimeter she sighed in a bit of relief, taking a look around at their surroundings and trying to detect any discerning scents. She spotted a small hole in a shrub and promptly shoved herself through, expecting the other kit to follow her.
Feeling slightly exposed in the open world, but the confidence that seemed to flow from her companion seemed to help a little as she followed her diligently. Internally, she felt slightly embarrassed. If she remembered correctly, she was slightly older than Chestnutkit, so it somewhat felt foolish to be lead around as she was. However, she let the thought slip away and ignored any further negativity in her mind as they wandered further from camp.
Staring blankly at the hole in the shrub for a few moments, debating to follow or not. With a slight shrug, she pulled herself forward to follow along.
Chestnutkit, being how she was, hardly kept track of her clanmates; more often than not she had her head up her own butt. Her own hobbies carried her attention more than anything else. Feeling proud of her escaped she plodded along without much care, tail high and twitching from side to side like she hadn't a care in the world. Her gaze flicked to the various foliage that sprouted up among them, trying desperately to discern the different plans, keeping her mouth open slightly for familiar scents.
The kit spotted some familiar herb near what looked like some sort of den and, being up her own butt as usual, took no heed of it. Instead she pelted directly in front of it and plunged her head into the small group of herbs beside it, tail flicking wildly. "Hey, I think I found something!" She squeaked in excitement to the accompanying kit.
Rosekit, having not a whole lot of adventure so far in her life, was much more cautious as she followed Chestnutkit towards whatever it was that she had located in the foliage. There was a strange scent in the area, but unable to tell what it was, she approached even more cautiously, her green gaze wide as she surveyed the area while growing closer to the den where Chestnutkit had found the herb.
The kit began picking what she could, though she really wasn't sure where to bite it at to ensure it wasn't damaged or wasted, nonetheless a resounding purr exited her and seemed to echo into the gaping mouth of the den in front of them. Chestnutkit removed her head from the plant and sat her ragged looking bundle on the earth, feeling pride rush through her until a strange scent wafted to her now free nose and mouth, and her loud purr was gone in seconds. A small shot of anxiety shivered her spine as she peered into the darkness, and it only increased as the scent seemed to grow stronger still.
"We should go." The she-kit mewed with a trembly voice, quickly snatching up her questionable herbs and peering into Rosekit's eyes with a strong urgency, only briefly, before she turned in the opposite direction of the hole and began to half-trot away.
Rosekit had just gotten close enough to get a strong scent of the herbs as Chestnutkit pulled them from their stems, and it was so strong that it took her several moments to understand that something else, something much more dangerous than a strange pile of herbs, was looming in the den in the ground. "Yes," she confirmed, quick to follow her den-mate, pale eyes anxiously watching their retreat to make sure that nothing followed.
