There was something about the dark woods tonight- the way fog lifted off the snow and swirled mysteriously, the way spectral light emanated through the naked branches bowing down overhead, the way the silence seemed as frozen as the rest of the world- that made the fur rise on Crow's shoulders. Since his return, he mostly stayed confined to the nursery with his family, but on his many sleepless nights, he was a wanderer haunting the familiar paths of SummerClan's moonlight realm. Usually, it was a silent, breathless walk.
Tonight, however, the silence was fragile, and one of Crow's ears kept twitching, disturbed by the faint, ethereal tither of kitten giggles that bounced off the tree trunks.

Midnightkit knew she wasn't supposed to be out here, but she had seen her papa leave the nursery, and well, mama was too busy with the other two anyway. She had never really felt like she belonged, and Sunrisekit was always so much more bright and giggly and friendly with everyone, while all she wanted was just a little bit of quiet.
So without a word, she had snuck out, following her father a few steps behind, wondering where he was going. Surely there must be something interesting out there if he was heading out all on his own...she was keeping quiet, silent, until she stepped on a branch. A small crack interrupted the sound of crickets, as she froze.
His kids didn't know him well yet. This litter knew him as tearful eyes and endless games of mossball, involving himself in their affairs as often as he could to supplement the first moon of their life he'd missed, and they knew nothing of the roguish instinct veiled in his steps. Danger invoked a quieter, nimble stalk; one of his wayward kids trailing him in the dusk didn't generate anything more than wan amusement.
When the snap resonated behind him, Crow abandoned his pretense of obliviousness, turning to regard his daughter with an expression of manufactured surprise. "Midnightkit," he tutted, lacking reproach, "shouldn't you be asleep? With your mother? In camp?"

Midnightkit's eyes were wide, endlessly so as she stared up to her father, a character she felt was almost a stranger to her. She opened her mouth to speak, but her cheeks were flushed as she stared for a little longer, before looking at her paws sheepishly. "I couldn't sleep papa," she admitted, "and I wanted to see where you were going...you're always out at night and...and..." She didn't want to tell him that she was afraid she'd blink and he'd be gone again, into the winds without the chance to ever get to know the tom, but it was easy enough to read on her face.
He smiled, soft and sad, and padded over to his daughter to smooth the ruffled fur on her forehead with a few warm licks. "I have to patrol so no boogey-cats can get into camp and take the little sleepless kits running amuck, isn't that right? But I'm always going to come home, my love. Not even those nasty NightClanners could keep me away." Knowing full well the last thing to ease Midnightkit's worries would be rushing her back to camp, Crow let his sigh fog the air in front of him, nuzzling her closer to him with his tail, and decided that if his kit was going to sneak out, at the very least being with him wasn't the worst place for her to be.
"Want to come see something that's very cool and special?" he then asked, looking ahead.

Midnightkit still looked doubtful; the young kitten was always a worrier at heart, completely different from her twin really, but she only nodded at his words, immediately trotting so she was standing between her father's front paws. "Where are we going?" she asked curiously, peering up so her bright blue eyes were shining brightly at Devotedcrow. Her voice was hushed, in both wonder and a slight nervousness. "Will we see any boogie-cats?"
Crow nosed against Midnightkit's shoulder then pulled back with a grin full of mischief. "No boogie-cats your ol' Dad can't take care of," he assured her as they set off.
He didn't indicate where or what they were searching for, other than to assure her that there was nothing to fear, as he led her further into the shadowed parts of the Deep Lands. Distantly, there was a waterfall crashing over a hill. The river it spawned cut through ahead and glowed a bright, fantastical silver in the light of the moon, while all around it was darkness and neverending oblivion. Both Crow and Midnightkit were impossible to pick out, their dark fur moving as made of shadows.
When he finally stopped, Crow pulled his tail to his mouth and gestured at Midnightkit, signaling to stay hushed. Nothing moved or stirred for a while. Then, the light brightening and the darkness darkening impossibly, a small being seemingly made of starlight bounced into view and dropped into a playful crouch. "Daddy?" she called out, a happy growl in her voice, "Are you there?"
Crow nudged Midnightkit, grinned, and then stepped out. "I'm here, Daylightkit."

Midnightkit followed, the nervous twitch still evident in the way her small tail shook as she followed her father further into the forest. Was it always so dark? Did warriors really have to patrol like this? She looked up at Crow with wide eyes; he must be so brave to be out here at night...she couldn't imagine crawling through the grass like this on her own, with no idea what lurked out there...
Suddenly, a tail almost smacked her in the face, as she looked up to see her father gesturing to stay quiet. What was going on? She wanted to ask, but she pressed her lips together tightly to show she understood, only to let out a gasp when something spoke.
A...kit? She blinked, wide-eyed at Daylightkit. A gasp left her mouth, before she realized she was supposed to stay quiet. "Daddy?" her voice shook, "wh-who's that?"
