Someone was jumping on Lastpaw and it wasn't her own sister.
When Lastpaw and Firstpaw had entered as apprentices Glowstar explained that training was a bit different. That by the next morning they would be approached by a spirit guide. A cat of StarClan who would mentor them that only apprentices could see. Once they turned to warriors they would no longer be able to see them. Glowstar explained it away by saying that the holy Moon Creek flowed through underground currents thus blessing the land. But the explanation seemed questionable at best. Nonetheless Glowstar promised that they would wake up to find their spirit guide there to mentor them. Which is exactly what Lastpaw found. An apprentice aged cat jumping up and down in excitement all around Lastpaw shouting, "omigash!"
Of course this could have been a living apprentice and not one from StarClan, but the moment she leapt into Lastpaw's vision she could tell that the apprentice had a starry vanilla pelt, she didn't look very see through at all which meant she must have died recently as many must be remembering her.
"Hi I'm Vanillapaw!" The StarClan apprentice introduced herself jumping away from Lastpaw's nest and in front of her, "Sorry, I'm just so excited to see the surface world again and actually mentor!" She squealed, "Sorry, sorry. I died before I could ever grow up to mentor someone so I'm just real excited."
The faint growl that had risen in Lastpaw's throat died away at the introduction. Honestly, Lastpaw had been iffy about the whole StarClan thing, and even about joining the Clan in the first place. Firstpaw seemed happy though, and they really did have nowhere else to go... Shaking these thoughts away, she faced the cat who had disrupted her slumber. "Ummm, okay... so What are we going to do?" she asked simply.
"FISHING!" Vanillapaw squealed unable to contain herself.
DayClan had hardly any luck with catching much prey. Usually a patrol would go out into the distant wooded area that no longer belonged to them and would return by night with plenty of prey, but it only lasted a night. One meal a day wasn't exactly surviving. But the few cats that could fish such as Eternallaughter who hailed from WaterClan knew enough about fishing to provide for the clan during such hardships.
"C'mon! We'll go outside to the pond and I'll teach you how to fish. I know you DayClan cats don't all like fish, but you're starving and can't be picky," Vanillapaw explained.
For a moment, Vanillapaw's extremely excitable attitude had Lastpaw wondering if it was possible to claw a StarClan cat, but something held her back. She kind of reminded her of Firstpaw when they were younger... before things got bad... She shrugged. "My sister loves the water, and she's splashed me so many times that I really don't mind it anymore." She did her best to blink away the sadness in her usually fierce amber eyes.
"Aw, why do you look so sad? Does water make you sad?" Vanillapaw asked.
Her eyes looked gentle, but it only made sense for someone of her gleeful nature to not just be observant, but also shamelessly nosy. Vanillapaw shook out her ragdoll fur and moved closer to Lastpaw's side.
"Okey dokey!" Vanillapaw squeaked as she skipped over towards the arch way and over to the door, "Yah know I've never seen the inside of a two-leg place before. But I guess when you're snowed out of your entire camp you gotta make due right?"
She squeezed through the cat sized crack in the wall a flurry of stardust exploding out in front of Lastpaw from her fur onto her. Vanillapaw was headed towards the gates, but made sure to wait up for her apprentice.
Before long Vanillapaw had lead her to the creek. The ragdoll apprentice sized she-cat was a bit hard to miss jumping up and down in the creek making ripple affects over the water. She let out a suppressed giggly laughter and turned excitedly to Lastpaw, "Welcome tooooo theeee water! Now I know this might be a wittle intimidating to you. But! I think if you get your paws in the water just a little we can commence the fishing lessons. So c'mon, just let your paws get wet, but your belly out of the water. see how it feels," She encouraged.
Lastpaw followed, looking somewhat less eager than before. She refused to hesitate however, and with a noncommittal grunt, she picked her way down to the water's edge and stepped in.
The water stung with the cold and lapped at Lastpaw's pelt pulling at it. Vanillapaw's cold pelt brushed up against Lastpaw's pelt, "Feels good doesn't it?" She asked in a sing song voice.
Vanillapaw tried swishing the water before taking a good look around, "Oh right it's freezing. Okay! So um. How about we um. We could go and fish from the land, how about that? You just sit at the bank with your shadow away from the water and then search for fish. Usually I'd say keep your paw in the water, but because it's cold I'll just teach you to be fast."
Lastpaw nodded, disappointed in herself for letting her discomfort show. She said nothing though, only jumping up into the bank, not letting her shadow fall on the water.
Tiny fish swam by her as Vanillapaw curiously watched by her side with a giddy expression.
"Okay soooo, predict where they're going to go and aim in that direction. Oh! And don't forget to be quiet when fishing. Even the tiniest disturbances can rattle water," She explained.
Lastpaw raised her paw in preparation, her amber gaze intense. Eventually, her paw lashed out. She didn't seem to have the scooping motion down and simply sent the poor thing flying further downriver. Her jaw clenched in frustration, then relaxed as she took a deep breath.
"No apprentice has ever caught a fish on their first try, not even the second. Don't worry if you can't hunt one today, I was a WaterClan apprentice and it took me a whole week to catch one! If it takes a week or even over a week I'll be there every paw step of the way to encourage you through it. So go ahead and try it again," Vanillapaw purred.
Lastpaw nodded and returned to her prior stance, trying not to let her irritation get to her. This time when she struck, it was closer to correct, but the fish still never made it to land.
