Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
GATHERING RULES - No surprise attacks while a gathering is occurring
- If a cat tries to cause trouble/fight they aren't allowed at the gathering for a few moons
- Gatherings happen every full moon for the clans in a section (mountain clans together, forest clans together, etc.). Once every season a full forest gathering of all the clans may happen on the full moon.
- Fighting is allowed at gatherings, but each side must 1) agree to the fight (turning down a challenge is always allowed), 2) set rules before the fight and 3) have a referee from a different group oversee it.
- Exiled cats of any crime can only join a different clan by formally attending the gathering to publicly plead for sanctuary in another clan. It is up to the clan leaders attending to choose to take them in or not.
GENERAL RULES - When a Deputy (or its equivalent) passes away, or a new Leader is put in charge of a clan, a successor should be named as soon as possible to avoid a worst-case scenario where the leader passes away soon after and a clan is left without clear leadership.
- Free and safe passage to all healers for herb collecting
- Tend to your sick and weak and young with honor. Feed them before yourself, heal them before yourself, protect them before yourself.
- Do not waste prey, herbs, or resources. They are scarce across the lands and cats can not afford to waste what we have.
- All cats are allowed to start families should they choose - this includes leaders, med cats, etc.
- Clans may form alliances to give passage, otherwise trespassing is frowned upon. Some may decide their borders are open at their own discretion.
- Cats can have mates outside of their clans. But may need to meet outside their clan depending on alliances
- If two clans are stuck at war for longer than 6 moons. The other clans may intervene to push for peace, including proposing an arranged marriage to unify the clans and force peaceful negotiations.
KIT RULES - No cat is allowed to ignore a kit in pain or danger, regardless of clan. Any cat found to ignore this rule will be punished severely.
- No Clan is allowed to abuse kits for any reason, upon discovery these kits should be surrendered immediately (regardless of age) to their closest relatives in another clan, or if none are found fit adopted into a nearby clan that wants them.
- Every birth parent has the right to keep their kits mother or father a secret
Aspenstar let out a sigh, flicking her tail. The cats of NightClan gathered below her the way they always did - she'd never quite get used to the fact that she could flick her tail and at least half of the clan was at her complete beck and call. She supposed that didn't matter now. There was work to be done.
"Cats of NightClan!" she called, her mismatched, half blind gaze settling on the crowd in front of her. "As you all know, last night, the new warrior code was passed by the leaders throughout the forest. For the sake of peace, we formally have agreed to these words. However, I do not think that it is fair to have such a long list of rules without any input at all from the rest of you. As such, tonight will be the night that we as a group discuss our thoughts on the new code, and what parts concern us if any. Anyone is welcome to throw their input to the crowd, we will discuss it all."
Floodfate rarely participated in group discussions; clan politics did not interest him anymore and he would rather sulk at the back of the crowd than draw their attention down on him. His purpose here was laying low, and he couldn't do that if the entire clan was muttering about him. Today, though, the round gray-and-white tom stirred, staring up at Aspenstar through narrowed eyes.
"You can't trust a healer," he spat. His voice was rough and raspy from trying to speak so much louder than normal. "They'll say they've come for herbs, but they'll take back some of everything. They've got no place here, stealing herbs from our medicine cats."
"Our own medicine cat is case and point. Do we really think that other cats would act any different?" The voice was from a smaller figure, an apprentice. "The plants that grow on our soil are ours, why should we have to share?" There was a hint of defensiveness in Sunsetpaw's voice. After all, he had been the one that was cultivating the small garden of poisonous flowers. If medicine cats just charged in there, what if they stumbled on it? The garden was NightClan's secret, a secret that couldn't be told.
Aspenstar tilted her head. Out of all rule objections, she was quite surprised that this one had been the first to be challenged. There was a part of her that was deeply wounded by the words; it was a clear depiction of just how far her clan had fallen from favor of the stars. Of course, Aspenstar no longer wished for StarClan's blessing, the leader saw no value in their ancestors, but the medicine cat rule was a remnant of the original code, one that had once been very important to NightClan. Of course, it wasn't Aspenstar's fault alone that the clan had fallen from where it had once been; no, she was handed a bad situation, and it wasn't entirely her own decisions that made it worse.
"The open passing of healers has been a core part of all codes that have governed these lands. Do you have a particular example of a healer that has come with poor intentions?" Cleaver
His short ear flicked in acknowledgment of the apprentice. Not the ally he had been hoping for, but he took what he got.
"Firetooth, if you'll forgive me starting with the most drastic example." His response was immediate as he met Aspenstar's gaze, his pale blue eyes clouded by hatred. Few cats knew of his relation to the medicine cat, especially when they resembled each other very little; he was short and round where Firetooth was tall and lanky, his fur white-and-grey where his brother's was an obnoxious orange. "He marched into SunClan and attacked their God. Just another in a life of violent medicine cats." His muzzle wrinkled. "When the medicine cats swear to stop fighting and hurting their cats, that's when they can come back over here. But I don't want the League's Shaman coming over here to poison our herbs."
Aspenstar flicked her tail; interesting, that he would use SwiftClan's medicine cat as an example. Out of all of the clans, SwiftClan and NightClan had the best relationship; or at least, they did under Cradlegrave. Aspenstar still hadn't taken the time to congratulate the new leader- perhaps she should put that on her docket. Even more interesting that the tom brought up the idea of attacking the Sun God. It was bizarre to think that Sun God hadn't at least a little deserved it; however, this, she decided, was neither here nor there.
"Although I recognize what you say," the leader started cautiously, "but what do you suggest the alternative be? Do we attack medicine cats on sight? Do we ask them to wait at the borders for a companion?" Her eyes blinked as she set the precedent for the rest of the meeting; if you wanted to challenge a rule, which she genuinely supported, you had to have a plan on what to do about the issue instead.
Floodfate would have loved to dig his claws into the ginger healer's coat and chase him out of the territory, but he was shrewd. Aspenstar was suspicious of his idea and he couldn't afford to push her the wrong way. He wasn't very good at reading other cats, and he could not fathom where her hesitation came from. That made it tricky to step carefully around this issue.
"If we find them on the territory, we march them out of here and they leave their herbs behind. Trespassers don't get prizes," he insisted. He wasn't going to budge on that point, but reluctantly he went on. "If they wait at the border we will supervise their visit, but they should not take much. We need those herbs too."
Aspenstar rolled his words over in her head. On one hand, she had been one of the leaders to directly affirm the medicine cat safe travels rule at the gathering, and to save face, perhaps she should be more adament. On the other hand, Floodfate's idea didn't .... necessarily break the rules. The medicine cats still would be granted safe passage, technically, just not unlimited access to herbs. That seemed like a... fair enough request, that medicine cats not march in and do as they please.
"As long as no harm is done to them either way, we are technically not in violation, if we play loose and fast with definitions of 'free.' So long as we don't deny reasonable requests if they stay at the border, this could work," she meowed after a second. She blinked twice, her tail flicking back and forth. "Does anyone disagree with this compromise?"
"Now hold on a moment!" Duskwing spoke up, the three legged she cat rising to her paws.
"It's true we should be cautious," The she cat had begun to look more and more like an elder as time passed especially with the disappearance now of her son Beetleflight. The loss of another of her kin had devastated the she cat. "But if we start making it harder on other healers, we'll likely incur the same favor." She noted. "What'll happen if we need something but since we treated all clan healers like threats they opted to bar ours when we needed something?"
"Favors are a powerful thing." Duskwing went on. "And herbs can be vital to cats survival. Take a cats life you may gain a family members ire, if not the ire of a whole clan. Especially if it's because you hindered the efforts of the healers. And though NightClan can stand alone, I've seen enough hardship to know sometimes, you don't want to burn all your bridges in case you need one when it starts to flood."
"The fact that a majority of the clans and groups upheld this rule, means breaking it will paint a target on NightClan. Why make our lives harder. Especially when we can simply make a point to take the herbs and force negotiations to happen?" Duskwing went on.
She lifted her chin. "If we keep a tighter grasp on our herbs, then we'll be seen as so compassionate when we kindly allow any healers who come and note that the only supplies available are from our own stores. There is no risk of poison and we can easily play up our generosity when in reality we've simply either relocated or hidden herbs."
"But that'll mean picking all the herbs, or somehow moving them to fit our fancy," Fierydaemon said with a huff. "I doubt that'll be a good idea outside of say leafbare. No way Pinesimmer and Jackdawpaw can store all those herbs all the time."
Floodfate sat down, nodding his assent with the new change. He was content to leave the argument there and let the others bicker over the rest of the rule changes, but instead, Duskwing decided to speak. Funny; she spoke twice as long as he did yet said nothing of interest.
"If you want to waste your time growing your own herbs, feel free," the broad-faced tom agreed dryly. "Try to only grow one at a time, so the medicine cats wandering freely through our territory don't happen upon your patch."
Aspenstar had the right idea: as long as they're overtly, publicly hostile, they were technically abiding by the rules, and the other clans couldn't get fussy. He would prefer to skin them the moment they stepped over the border but not all wishes came true. Duskwing's talk of alliances fell flat on his ears. Not only did Floodfate recoil at the idea of working with other cats, he felt that they had never helped NightClan in the past, and likely wouldn't in the future.
"If we let their healers in, the other clans won't be our allies." His pale gaze moved back to Aspenstar. "They'll just weaken us so we're easier to take down later."
Duskwing huffed and relented the elder grumbling something under her breath but opted to say nothing more
"You talk about weakness, but what strength in there in this fear?" Skybrook asked. "You talk about cats poisoning each others herbs, and yet how often does it happen? Are our noses so blind we'd be so unaware of a healer in our land? there'd be no reason to meet them at the border if we're aware of the ongoings in our own territory, and can find them easily. If their scent is all over herbs and yet they come away with none, we can logically discern what happened."
"You yourself stated that we needed to allow Medicine Cats to go where they need to. Because they need to exist beyond clan boundaries, and focus on healing." Skybrook stated the blind she cat lifting her head to raise her voice."NightClan can stand alone of course. But all this paranoia does nothing but make us seem hypocritical and like we're so terrified, especially by mere healers? Will we not seem like mice, scared and needing the protection of our burrows with thick walls, and jumping at perceived threats?"
She strongly disliked the anti other clan sentiments that had grown deeper and deeper with each passing leader. But this was the last straw. Hearing Floodfate spew and encourage paranoia made her disgusted. Healers needed to be able to travel as they did. Anyone impeding them it rarely ended well.
AFter all two healers after being wronged brought down a God from what she'd heard about what happened to the Sun God at the paws of Autumngossamer and Firetooth. Healers lived lives that was beyond what a normal clan cat could understand. Why mess with that when they didn't need to?
The scarred warrior resisted the urge to roll his eyes -- the blind she-cat wouldn't see it anyway. He curbed the urge to cuff her over the ear as well. How had she grown to be a warrior with such an idealistic view of the world? Fear was strength. Time and time again, the clans had proved it was the only strength they would listen to. SunClan's influence ranged far and wide while the peaceful clans quivered and bowed their heads to their demands. If they counted on the good nature of their allies to keep them safe, they'd be as dead as his old clan.
"I'd rather be paranoid than dead," Floodfate stated. "If we track their scent to our herbs and find them destroyed, it's already too late."
"Now, now." The blue tom wove between the crowd to stand beside Skybrook. "I see her point. Accosting healers is generally a waste of warriors that could be helping elsewhere." Stormreign rested his tail on the she-cat's back briefly in a show of support. "But I think we're both forgetting something, aren't we? The High Priestess is a healer; a few moons ago, this rule would be letting Bloodystar himself trot all over our lands. He might be gone now, but Commander Shule is still around, and every commander is trained in healing. I don't want her coming anywhere near this territory without a guard, do you?"
