"It ended... bitter sweet" she replied honestly, and sometimes she still thought back to that time and what could have been
"When we met up, it was clear that it had simply a misunderstanding. Even though we no longer had to be together, the two of us continued to meet in secret falling more deeply in love than even before. We shared many a night out under the moonlight, gazing up at the stars, before rushing back to our separate clans before we were missed. This continued on for a long time, until Foxstar told me that I was pregnant. She never asked who the father was, though I am rather sure she had long since suspected whom I was meeting with. We were already set up to meet that night, but that was when everything between us changed. He burst out talking the moment we connected, telling me about his new appointment to become WinterClan's deputy" she paused letting it sink in for a few moments before going on
"It may not seem like a big deal, but that announcement changed everything. I was ready to ask him to come to SunClan to be with me, and he would have. He would have dropped everything and walked away from WInterClan without a second thought. But how could I do that? Doomed my birth clan to suffer under that tyrant for any longer? Nor could I go to WinterClan, Understar would have slit my throat the moment I crosse over that border. I knew that Leatherfern couldn't know the truth, he couldn't know that I was carrying his kits. So that night, instead of asking him to come be with me. I ended things between us"
"He screamed and begged, pleaded for me to tell him what he had done wrong. I told him that now we were both in a deputy position, that it would be wrong to continue putting our needs before that of the clans. He didn't buy it. Thats when he offered me his warrior bond"

"That's so... sad. But honorable." She saw Littlestar in a new light. Of course she would do anything for her clan. She was their priestess and all the things you could ever want in one. But to be able to make a decision like that for the sake of an entire clan.... Lacelily wondered if she was capable of such a decision. She shuttered, glad that she would never have to. Hopefully.
"What is a warrior bond?" She truly had a thirst for knowledge. Everything Littlestar told her today would forever be stored in her tiny little brain. She did always have a knack for remembering things and always wanted to know more. "Is it another winterclan custom?"

Littlestar nodded "Yes, it is similar to how when SunClan cats tie the knot it binds them together, just not as intense. With a warrior bond you are able to feel the other cat's emotions and pain, but the bond ends when you pass away and there are ways to sever it. He refused to accept me leaving him, not until I accepted his bond. This would allow for him to know when I was in trouble, but it was one sided. He would be able to feel everything that I felt, but I would feel nothing but tingling from him. I was desperate to end things, so in the end I agreed and we went our separate ways"
Littlestar sighed looking back at the entrance to the camp "It was only then that me and your father began to talk. There was no longer any chance of a future with Leatherfern. At first were only friends, bonding over the loss of our mates together. He was always checking in on me, bringing me little presents just to make me smile, and some how along the way we fell for one another"

That was the love story she was looking for, but it made the young cat feel warm and even a bit embarrassed. "That's so sweet. I want to find a cat like that one day, but I think I'll be busy learning for a long time first!" She wanted to become someone great that she was proud of so she could stand in front of a cat she loved one day and feel pride and love for herself. That was the kind of cat she wanted to be. "What happened to Leatherfern once that happened? It sounds like you found someone. Did he ever find anyone? Can they take away a warrior bond and then offer it to another cat?" She had so many questions.

"I wish Leatherstar had a happier ending" she couldn't really hide the sadness in her voice when she spoke of him "When I gave birth to Lionpride and Fernskip, I almost died. I was far to young to be pregnant, and far to small. Had both Foxstar and Mountainsound not been there, I wouldn't have made it through the kitting. Leatherstar felt my pain, coming all the way to SUnClan even though he was in agony to get to me. By then he had become WInterClan's leader, leaving everything behind to come to me. He made me choose. Him or Skipstep... WinterClan or SunClan... It wasn't fair to Leatherstar, but I choose Skipstep. Leatherstar had done nothing wrong, but in my heart I knew that he wasn't the one I truly loved. For a long time he stayed away, going back to WInterClan and giving me space. Then he returne, determine to take our kits away to be with him in WinterClan. He thought that if he couldn't have me, than having our children would help to ease the ache in his heart"

She gasped in response, that was horribly. She didn't know it was dangerous for young cats to give birth either but figured it was something to remember. She had questions around kittings but that would all be covered in her regular training, she would not squander her time for that. "That's really sad. Did he ever find anyone else after you?"

She shook her head, looking up towards the sky "No, he died not to long after that. An accident, that would have killed many others had her not been there. Even now I can sometimes feel his spirit watching over me. A faint whiff of his scent, quiet whispers.I just hope that he was able to find peace in the end"

She smiled an enigmatic smile and her blue eyes flashed as she looked up at the sky, wondering and thinking. "I may not know much, but by the way you speak of him ill bet he is happy that you found happiness. Even if it wasn't with him. That's really what love is, isn't it?" She wasn't really sure where the idea came from, but the statement felt right. The little kit had far more wisdom in her soul than she let on and was still learning how to tap into the endless reservoir.
"Plus I wouldn't be here if you hadn't made that decision so thank you for letting me be born!" She giggled lightly.

Littlestar couldn't hide her smile at the young she-cat's words.
For such a little kit, she sure had a good head on her shoulders and caring heart in her chest. It was moments like these that gave her hope. Hope that one day SunClan would be better than when she entered it. She had made a lot of mistakes, but it was with this goal in mind that she kept forging forward. Doing everything within her grasp to achieve it. It was cats like Lacelily that SunClan needed more than ever.
"Agreed, I believe everything happens for a reason. We may not know it in the moment that it happens, but it is all leading to something" she ruffled the fur on Lacelily's head, bounding ahead out into the sunflower fields "So about that first hunt, show me what you know so far and we will go from there. Mice love to munch on the sunflower seeds, so there should be no shortage of food here"

She smiled at the affectionate gesture from her grandmother, feeling pride balloon in her chest. She could sense the praise and it felt good to receive it too. Lacelily thrived with positive attention and reinforcement. It made her feel more determined and more focused. Mice. Sunflower seeds. Got it. She hadn't learned much about hunting and she was almost the age and size of an apprentice so she still had a bit of a disadvantage.
First, the fluffy silver tabby crouched to show off her hunters form. It was a little clumsy and took her a moment but she practiced stalking forward as she searched for a mouse. As suggested, there was one not too far nibbling on some sunflower seeds. She stalked it slowly, carefully, and with patience, but found herself losing her balance. Lacelily fell to her side and scared the mouse away. Mousedung! She looked up at Littlestar with warm cheeks, feeling embarrassed by her failure. "Welp."

"Not bad" she purred, helping the kit to her paws
"Your form is almost right, you just need to practice moving in it a little more to help with your balance. You will get the hang of it, you have good instincts" The silver queen dropped into her own hunters crouch, gliding over the ground like a mist through the flowers "Your hunter's crouch will eventually feel as natural to you as walking, but just like when you were first learning to walk in the nursery it takes time and practice"

She was impressed with Littlestar's hunters crouch, but of course. She was the priestess and in that position for a reason. "Okay, let me try again," Lacelily had carefully observed the older cats movements. She tried again, a little better even though it was awkward and her fluffy pelt was in her way a bit. She looked back over her shoulder with a grin, "That one felt better. Sometimes it feels like I'll never learn everything!"

Littlestar chuckled "What do you mean? You are learning and growing all the time, even when you don't realize it" she moved in a circle around the janus still in a hunter's crouch "Its the little things that matter most. Like how the ground feels under your paws, the minute movements you make to correct yourself as you go" Lacelily was already moving more comfortably, part of it was repetition, but the bigger part of it was confidence "Every time you work on something you gain a little bit of knowledge, and that adds up over time"
She smiled "Some cats are afraid of making mistakes, but I see them as a learning opportunity. A chance to improve"

She nodded thoughtfully. Mistakes provided learning opportunities. Noted. "What if I make a really big mistake?" She wasn't planning to, but everybody made mistakes. "I know I will have to do some things that can turn into big mistakes. So how do you muster up courage for those things? Like performing a surgery?" The silver tabby knew a day could come where another cats life was in her paws. She copied her grandmother's huntiing crouch as she asked the questions, placing her paws thoughtfully and playing with the way she adjusted her weight. It would take a long time before she was anywhere near as good as Littlestar.

"Unfortunately, mistakes are unavoidable" Littlestar moved along keeping her paws light and focused "You can do your absolute best, and still make a mistake. Even the smartest of cats are unable to foresee every scenario. The best advice I can give you is to love your self enough to give yourself the gift of forgiveness. As a Janus you will one day be faced with nearly impossible choices. Cats will always question if you were right or wrong, if you were wise or mouse-brained, but those cats are not you. They don't know what odds you were facing or what lies within your heart. What is important is that you can live with your decision, and know that in that moment you were doing your best even if it was a mistake"

She nodded thoughtfully. Lacelily needed to remember that. Of course she would make mistakes, even the sun god made mistakes from the sounds of things, although it wasn't her place to judge that. She spied some movement just in the distance and tipped her head curiously, it seemed to be prey but was hidden just behind a lot. "Did you see that?" she sked quietly, dropping into her newly learned hunter's crouch. Moving forward, it was a little bit larger than a squirrel and had a long and ugly snout. She squealed in horror and scrambled backwards as the thing dropped to the floor, dead at her feet. "What is that?!" Lacelily exclaimed in absolute horror.

Littlestar burst into laughters as Lacelilly jumped backwards at the odd creature now laying there with it's tongue hanging out of the side of it's mouth, emitting a foul smell "That is a possom" she moved over to the the young cat's side "When threatened, they fall over and pretend to be dead so that we will leave them alone" she gently prodded it with her paw "It is a rather good actor, but don't be fooled"

"Can I eat it, though?" She asked curiously, mimicking Littlestar. "It smells like crowfood," She wrinkled her nose in disgust and shook her head. Even if it was edible she wasn't so sure she would want it in her mouth. She shook the paw that touched the possum as if that would get the germs off.

"You could, but I wouldn't advise it unless the clan is desperate. As you said they reek, and they don't taste all that appetizing either. I usually just leave them be unless they are causing problems with our herb stocks." The silver queen stepped around the possom "Lets watch from distance and you will see what I mean. As soon as it thinks it is alone it will get up and walk away"

She followed the priestess and sure enough it got up and walked away, just as she said. "What a funny looking thing. No opossum sacrifices to the sun god, got it." She grinned up at Littlestar but her face quickly scrunched up as a thought struck her.
"Speaking of sacrifices... How did you manage to catch a hawk before?" She was still so small that hawks were actually a thing of terror for her. One could choose to swoop down and catch her if it so wanted to.
