Hywel had been concerned, but the bratty whine that came from Doefreckle made his lips split open into a grin. The tom rolled his eyes good-naturedly. Gods he was such a drama queen, he thought fondly, as he poked the other tom in the side again, giving him a playful pout as he rolled over, before Hywel rested his head on Doefreckle's shoulder, snuggling around the other cat playfully. "Aw don't be mad at me," he pouted, "wouldn't you like to cuddle and sunbathe instead?" He nuzzled the other tom once more, big puppy dog eyes–ones that truly could give Doefreckle a run for his money–asking for him to indulge rather than to keep that frown on his face.
Doe smiled to himself when Hywel rested his head on his shoulder, hoping the other tom didn't see. When it seemed like he might, his baby blue eyes looking down at him beseechingly, he wiped the smile from his face and glowered disinterestedly at the dust on the cathedral stone. "Why, Hywel?" he replied long-sufferingly, pushing himself up suddenly, dislodging Hywel unceremoniously, and padding along the ledge before sitting down away from him, back turned pointedly to the silver tom. Really, he had just moved to a spot where the golden sun was pooling on the stone, dust motes caught in the warm ray. Perfect for sunbathing. "Go be cute with your other boy-toys." His tail dangled over the edge of the ledge on the side of the bells, twitching back and forth happily. He grinned to himself again, still facing away from Hywel.

Hywel had been grinning, when Doefreckle left him in an undignified lump. He rolled his eyes as he rolled onto his back, his eyes peering at the other cat. "What boy-toys?" he hummed, "are you just saying that or are you being a little jealous right now?" Hywel wasn't the type to fight or argue over little things but it seemed like Doefreckle wanted to say something. If he wasn't responding to his jokes or his attempts to smooth things over, he'd do the opposite. What would a little push do, after all?
"I don't get jealous," Doefreckle replied prissily, slipping down forepaws-first to flop neatly on the sun-warmed stone. That had always been true before - the first time he'd really felt it, when he'd learned of Chim settling down with Pygmyprawn, had been a nasty shock and a sickening feeling he was in no hurry to feel again. The thought of Hywel growing tired of their dates and settling down with some other tom did bother him, very slightly, and made him feel internally uncomfortable enough that he had to rearrange his paws where he was lying, but it still wasn't full-blown jealousy. After all, Hywel would then have to be jealous of the toms back in SummerClan and it was Doe who had refused exclusivity. There just wasn't any point in or reason for jealousy - they were just a casual thing. So if Hywel was hoping for some confession of deeper feelings that meant Doe had changed his mind, he was going to be disappointed.
But because he'd already almost derailed the date earlier in the alcove, Doe instead opted for a white lie that might stroke Hywel's ego a bit and spare him any further hurt and huffed, "but so what if I were?" Hoping that Hywel would finally come over and cuddle him and put all this talking to rest so they could nap, Doefreckle stretched out, back quivering slightly with the effort of it, and then tilted his head back to look at Hywel. Not imploringly - just with feigned, bratty disinterest, like it was up to the other tom whether he came over or not. Because he wasn't going to beg. He wasn't going to show how desperate he was, because he wasn't.
He didn't consider the idea that he'd convinced himself so thoroughly that he didn't have any feelings for Hywel that he was growing blind to the actual feelings settling in around his heart. At this rate, he'd be denying he was in love with Hywel during their wedding vows.

He smiled, as if he knew otherwise. Surely there'd be no need to ask him about his other flings if Doefreckle wasn't at least a little bit jealous. It was almost a little bit heart-warming really, how much he seemed to care. As much as he knew that they weren't in any type of commitment to each other, Doefreckle was someone he cared about, and he was frankly a little glad he had never known of the other cat's lovers other than the ones he had spoken of. Exes and former flings who probably still carried some sort of weight with the other cat...he didn't dwell on it.
He didn't feel that way, he reminded himself, still beating himself over how hurt he must've looked earlier when the other cat had temporarily dashed his hopes and dreams as if it was something casual. Don't get so hurt over this, he told himself again. They were just flings. Flings that shouldn't matter. He had his own here or there, with toms around the league, with cats he had met across the forest...but he had yet to feel attached to any of them as he did here.
He wanted to go over to Doefreckle, with his huge baby eyes and his little invitation and he had stood, as if ready to do so, and yet, Hywel didn't know how to read him. He was hoping this was an invitation, and yet he found himself hesitating at the faint look of disinterest as if it didn't matter to him. Was he just being a brat or had Hywel read this all wrong? He chuckled awkwardly, rubbing a paw across his ear. He wasn't a cat who needed to hear no twice, after all, and as much as he could pretend that they were back to normal, back to before that conversation was had, it wasn't.
"Well you'll need to tell me if you were," he pointed out with a weak laugh, "apparently I'm pretty bad at picking up hints. At least that's what my sister says."
Doe laughed at the sheer ridiculousness of the situation, all his brattiness melting away in that one soft sound. “Oh my God, Hywel, just come here,” he ordered the other tom exasperatedly, stretching out his good forepaw towards him from where he was still lying on his back, his head tilted back and the soft fur of his white belly exposed. He kneaded at the thin, warm air, reaching out at Hywel. “I’ll only be jealous if you start bringing other toms here, too. Now please just come and enjoy the sun with me. Okay? Don’t make me beg.”
Then, still lying in the same position, Doe suddenly snorted a little giggle and grinned upside down at the silver tom. “I keep forgetting you have a sister. Maybe she’d be less work than you.” He said, like he wasn’t the most high maintenance lover on the planet and incredibly aware - and proud - of that fact. But Doe’s joke was affectionately teasing, like Hywel’s endearing obliviousness was one of the many annoying quirks he lov-liked about him; there was no malice there.

Hywel wasn't trying to be a brat but he almost felt childish at Doe's exasperated sound, and yet there was a sense of relief. There was a part of him that wanted to be held, that wanted to be loved and cared for all the same, and he had been worried too, that Doefreckle didn't feel a single thing towards him. He had long told himself it didn't matter. Surely there were plenty of cats he had come across in his journeys, who had been an easy lay and an easy target for the night, cuddled up upon each other until the sun rose and he crept away quietly like the shadows. He hadn't deceived himself then, that any of them mattered to him for more than just the comfort of the night.
He had intended to do the same here, and yet Doefreckle had made it difficult. There was just that charm about him, the boyish smile and the way he was so honest and shy yet playful and caring...it had melted away the walls he had built for years, turned him into a cat he hadn't been since he was young. He found himself complying, immediately following the other cat's instructions as he curled up around the other tom, his head resting on his chest with a smitten smile.
"Oh yeah?" he chuckled, "wait until you meet her. You'll be grateful you don't have a sister like that." He found himself snuggling closer to Doefreckle, eyes closed in comfort.
Doe flopped the back of his head against the warm stone when Hywel obeyed, triumphantly following him with lazy, hooded eyes. He let out a brief purr when the other tom curled around him, looking down at where his chin was resting on his chest, their muzzles almost touching. The silver tom looked absolutely smitten with him - that hadn't been Doefreckle's intention, for Hywel to fall for him. He felt almost stifled by that look, panicked, like he should say his final farewells now and run back to SummerClan. But he didn't. For whatever reason, he didn't. He couldn't understand why not - every reasonable thought in his head was telling him to politely thank Hywel for his time like a good little gentleman and then, just as the other tom had feared, ghost him. But he didn't. That would keep him up that night, the confused, frustrated ache in his gut that felt vaguely like nausea and that would only make him more and more snappy as the days went by because he couldn't understand it. By the end of the week he'd be snapping at kits.
Trying to stubbornly push it and the awareness of his own heart pounding in his chest against Hywel's ear out of his mind - if you can't deal with it, ignore it, as he always said - Doe wriggled his way down until he was closer to the silver tom, Hywel's head now lying against his throat. For a moment he just watched him, looking so beautiful with his eyes closed. Then, snapping himself out of the thought and giving his head the tiniest shake of frustration, he nosed Hywel's muzzle up just enough to give him a quick little kiss. "Thank you again for the date," he told him softly, closing his eyes and brushing his muzzle against the other tom's so softly that it felt more like a feather tickling his fur. "It was beautiful."

He had never felt so relaxed, sipping the sun in its last golden droplets, against the warm fur of a lover, his ginger splashes felt like the sun truly painted him in splatters of colour. It was warm, it was lovely, and he couldn't help the way he had almost instantaneously closed his eyes, as if he was enjoying the last warmth of the summer, when Doefreckle spoke.
A quiet thank you, and his eyes opened, baby blues meeting Doe's warm brown ones with a softness to them. "I'm glad you liked it," he smiled, a flutter in his chest as the other tom nuzzled him, the light kiss making his cheeks warm. He couldn't help the way he felt giddy, even though he knew this would result in nothing other than his own disappointment.
"I'm glad I could show you a different part of the city," he spoke warmly.
At Hywel’s smile, Doe finally relented and allowed the purr he’d been fighting against to tremble through his whole body. What harm would it do him to give in just for this last hour of daylight? It wouldn’t amount to anything, and no one was around to see him surrender. As he lay there curled up with his lover, a warm purr flooding them both and filling the evening air between them, Doe pressed his nose to Hywel’s and fell asleep like that, his cheek against the golden cathedral stone and quietly buzzing gnats beginning to fill the summer’s dusk, smiling like a kit.
