Littlestar waited at the Janus camp, for all of the Janus to arrive. Today she would be giving the Janus and the Soothsayers some practical healing experience, to help further their education. With everything going on, it was more important than ever to keep their skills sharp, and to be ready for anything. Should the worst happen, she would need all the extra paws that she could in dealing with the sick and injured. Healing was an art form, and it took so much more than simply memorizing herbs and how to use them. It was knowing how far you could and should push your patients, being attentive to their needs, and most importantly recognizing the often subtle signs of something going wrong, before it could take hold. Littlestar was only one cat, and the High Priestess at that. She could not be everywhere at once, and having the Janus trained enough to at the very least act as assistants was crucial to the clan's survival stardanceNovaJetclawJadieuniqcrimHoneystormFlurryofstarsashestoashes
Skipstep was already by his mate's side. With his return to his position he was the oldest janus in the clan, with experience serving under both Foxstar and his mate.
Only losing his position during Bloodycrow's betrayal.
But even he had things to learn, and he didn't want to douse the younger new janus by acting almighty with his knowledge. He had experience in his paws, but he wasn't all knowing.
He was keen to see the janus and soothsayers grow.
"What's on the lesson plan for today?" He asked Littlestar a note of teasing in his mew. "Should I have brought a mouse to get on my mentor's good side?"
It had been so long since he'd felt light enough to joke, when he and Jetstar had been young apprentices she'd used to grouse about how carefree he was.
Pain and trauma had caused a shift in him, but now he'd begun to reclaim some of that lightness in his life. In hopes of easing Littlestar's heavy burdens.
"Oh Brother, get a room," Soaringlight groaned, rolling her eyes as she watched Skipstep blatantly flirt with Littlestar. This was supposed to be a training exercise and already they were making it awkward. At least for the most part she didn't have to pay too much attention as she'd more or less mastered herbs at this point... No, not to the same level as Littlestar, but she knew enough to get a least a high B when it came down to a test, which was good enough for her.

"Now, now you will have to wait and find out like all the others. This mentor doesn't take bribes" she grinned, playfully booping his nose before turning to her promised
"If there is one thing I have learned lately, it's that life is far to short. Best take advantage of the time you got" around her mate she was always more cheerful and outgoing, especially with their newest kits taking up a large portion of their time "Besides, we still have a few more minutes before the others arrive" she purred, taking advantage of the moment to walk past her mate and let her tail tickle under his chin "and everything is set up and ready to go" JetclawJadie

As Dancinglight arrived, she gave them a friendly nod before finding a place to sit. It was still difficult to act with ease in this new position, but after her conversation with Littlestar, the Janus didn’t seem nearly as stiff as she used to be. Today, with whatever they learned, she would try her best to stop being so awkward around her peers.
Soaringlight's expression morphed to something... almost painful? ... and then went blank. Moments later she turned her head away from Littlestar and remained dead silent. She didn't even react when Dancinglight arrived, her mind elsewhere, thinking of Huntleigh and Blindfaith, the siblings who died before she had a chance to really get to know them.

As the youngest and most inexperienced Janus, Lacelily approached the group tentatively. She sat down nearby quietly and gave a shy dip of her head. Lacelily was not known for having a shy nature but being so young in such a group certainly intimidated her. What if she wasn't good enough? What if she screwed up? Or worse, what if they didn't like her? Doubt clouded her mind but she kept her mouth shut and waited to find out what the day had in store for them.
Skipstep purred, head lifting as Littlestar's tail dragged under his chin. Tail lifting in delight as he let his mate take her position to do her job.
He glanced over and noted Lacelily joining the group. He smiled and dipped his head, with Littlestar clearly ready to start with business he butted her shoulder affectionately before making his way to sit beside his granddaughter.
"Fashionably late is on time right? I hope so because Silverfringe is going to skin me alive if it's not." Sorrowfularia was late, and probably far too nonchalant about it. But then again, they did seem to enjoy the murderous rage they got their wife into, so maybe it was best to just go with natural selection on this one.

Littlestar nodded, as the last of the Janus arrived pulling away from her mate reluctantly "Today's training exercise is in observation, and basic medical diagnosis and treatment. Earlier today I gave one of your clan-mates some more... subtle... indications of a looming illness. Of course these signs have been fabricated, but are very close to how the actual illness would manifest itself. Your job is to work together to find this cat, observe their symptoms, and come up with an appropriate course of treatment. Of course this cat is not actually ill, so once you have found them and come up with a plan of action you are to bring them to me and explain what you all have decided to do about it instead of giving them herbs. This is to help us better prepare for leaf-bare, for this illness is very common during this time"
Soaringlight found this exercise to be a major waste of time. Wouldn't Littlestar have achieved the same goal if she herself had pretended to be the ill cat and explained her symptoms? It also didn't help that the young Priestess Promised's heart wasn't in the right place at the moment, her mind haunted by a sadness triggered by Littlestar's earlier comment.
So, she was a smartass.
"Sounds to me like the illness is whitecough or greencough and the treatment is catmint. There, I just saved us all hours of time"

"Assumptions get cats killed Soaringlight" she replied firmly, but there was no malice in her voice
"It is our job to keep our clan healthy and well, would you want your clan-mates to die because you couldn't be bothered to investigate? What if it was your brother that was ill? Would you still assume that it was white-cough or green-cough without even examining him?" she pointed out "Soaringlight, you have a natural talent for healing even more so than I had at your age. However, there is more to being a priestess than simply knowing the herbs and offering treatments. Right now you are part of a team, and the other Janus will be counting on your medical knowledge to help guide them through this exercise. Are you going to let them down?" she paused, not wanting to lecture her in front of the others as she moved on to address the other cats
"Now go, there is no time to waste. If you don't act quickly, it will spread"
"Alright, off we go again" Sorrowfularia only half paid attention, but they got the gist. Find sick cat, make treatment decision, bring cat and decision back to Littlestar, or something close enough to that. Regardless, they didn't waste much time at all in just slipping away without anything else to add. So much for teamwork.
Nightfury just rolled his eyes. Of course they would have to do a stupid exercise like this eventually. He hated it. All of them too, but more specifically just this activity. The dark tom rolled his shoulders as leaned back into stretch. Better get this over with. He moved toward the exit and beckoned for the rest of them to follow.
"I'm not saying that this type of lesson isn't necessary. I'm saying that the way you are doing it is stupid. There are over one hundred cats in SunClan! Finding the one sick one is like finding a needle in a haystack," Soaringlight argued, her dragon blue eyes glimmering with agitation, "This isn't even a real scenario. If a cat feels sick they approach you directly for treatment, not the other way around."
She paused and sighed dramatically like a proper teenager before continuing.
"Oh, and leave my brother out of this. He's got about as much to do with this exercise as he does with being the Sun God. But whatever, I'll play along, this is way more fun than sorting through herbs or doing other real, beneficial work."
With that the dark-furred she-cat trotted after Nightfury, her tail-tip twitching all the while. She just wanted to get this over and done with.

Lacelily smiled at the affection her grandparents had for one another and nodded to Skipstep with determination. She did not know much yet but she would certainly do her best. She couldn't help but cast a doubtful look at Sorrowfularia. She did not see him as being a particularly capable cat. All she had seen of her father was he was good at running off and making smart remarks. Considering he was a Janus this long he had to have some redeeming qualities, she just hadn't found them yet.
"What kinds of things should we be looking for?" It was a general question for everyone, but she looked towards Skipstep. So far she was most comfortable with him and Lacelily had no clue what to look for. The young cat had yet to see her first leaf bare and had hardly seen any illness at all.

Littlestar sighed, but let her promised go on without to much of an argument "You shall see"
Unfortunately this was an all to real scenario. It wasn't all that uncommon for cats to try and just push through minor symptoms until it was to late and things had already spread or gotten worse. This particular illness, well it was one of those. It started off as a small rash on a cat's underbelly, easy brushed off as walking through something while out on patrol. It wasn't particularly itchy or painful at first, and most cats hardly noticed it at first. It was only after their skin broke out in painful blisters that they would come to see her, and by then it had spread like wildfire through the den. Spread by physical contact with the infected cat, bedding, or saliva. Contagious long before the symptoms became bothersome, and being located on the underbelly made it even more difficult to identify quickly.

Dancinglight wasn't annoyed by the task at all, having no medical knowledge whatsoever. Surely, she'd learn something useful from this. She wasted no time in stepping behind Nightfury, putting as much distance between Soaringlight and her complaints as she could in this scenario. As they walked, her amber eyes found Lacelily and studied the youngest Janus thoughtfully. Somehow, having her there made Dancinglight feel a little less out of place--less new and inexperienced perhaps. She waited a moment to see if anyone else would answer her question, before taking a breath and giving her best shot at socialization.
"If we're looking for subtle, fabricated signs of looming illness... Maybe someone's covered in green paint or pretending to be unconscious? I'm not really sure."

Ironically it was the Janus newest member that would have the best chance of finding whom it was that had the beginning signs of the illness. In fact, they had already come in contact with them. Only time would tell if they would be able to figure out this mystery.
Soaringlight dramatically rolled her eyes but didn't say anything else to Littlestar. She instead walked right up to the very first cat she saw and said loud enough for everyone to hear, "Hey, how are you feeling? Physically feeling."
