Despite his best efforts to hold his prey aloft, the snowy white back legs of the small hare dragged on the ground as the small tom entered the medicine cat's den and lay his offer silently at his mate's feet. Two days had passed since the kitting; Brindlemist's body had been lain to rest while a new mother sucked her three children, and the grieving father slept uneasily behind the nursery, a last desperate attempt to keep anyone from stealing his family away. Today was not the first time Robinring had brought his mate something to eat, but before he had not stuck around long enough to talk or even see if she had eaten; now that everything was settled, there was no reason to delay.
He sat down in front of her and tilted his head back, cold eyes restlessly dissecting Roseshade's face for every indicator of her state of mind. "Eat," he prompted.

How long had it been since she had ate? Roseshade couldn't remember.
Everything since Brindlemist had begun her kitting seemed like a blur, a nightmare that she was trying hard to awaken from. She hoped that at any moment she would open her eyes to find things back to normal, to have her sister walk through the entrance to den with that naïve sideways grin of hers and glimmering eyes. That she would feel her den with her warm scent, and endless light-hearted chatter. Brindlemist had been everything she was not. Cheerful, hopeful, and kind. A ray of of sunshine that Roseshade had fought for so long to keep pure and safe, her light now extinguished.
She wouldn't be returning, a reality Roseshade struggled to wrap her mind around. Even as she lowered Brindlemist's body into the cold earth for burial, it hadn't felt real. It was only upon going to the nursery and seeing the helpless kits alone that it really began to sink in. Brindlemist was gone, and they needed her. Their cries shattering her cold exterior. She had found them a queen to nurse them, yet still she lingered. Spending more time in the nursery than her own den overseeing every aspect of their care. They had a rough entrance into this world, but seemed to be getting stronger by the day. Kits were always delicate, but it seemed as if they were going to make it.
Before Roseshade would have thrown the hare right back into Robinring's face, just for the mere fact that he was ordering her to do something along with some curses and her own orders to leave. This time however, things were a little different... Give Robinring a chance, let him care for you.... Her sisters word's echoing in her ears, something far easier said than done. She stared blankly ahead, hardly acknowledging that he was there at all even as her muzzle lowered to the hare to take a bite. Never meeting his gaze, just numbly obeying the simple command. A victory for Robinring....
A victory, but not one he would celebrate now; there would time later to reflect on all he had won, and it would not be the last time he would succeed. Robinring was a champion, and he always got what he wanted. First, he had won her as his mate; now she was beginning to tolerate his presence and his gifts, however reluctantly. But today, with his mate broken and desolate before him, he did not even crack a smile at his triumph. Instead, he settled down opposite her, and once she began to eat he allowed his gaze to drift amicably off of her.
He had two victories over Roseshade now, but they were not without sacrifice. He couldn't be cold to her now, and once again he needed to choose his words carefully, to speak softly. She may hate him, but what kind of mate would he be if he didn't try and offer her some solace, even if it pushed him out of his comfort zone?
"You cared for your sister very much," he murmured quietly. "I will not presume that I can ever take her place. She was a very special cat." His normally flat tone was heavy; she was not the only one to lose Brindlemist, and the queen had been his closest friend. "It is not much. But when you are ready, I will be here."

"Your not even worthy of being her shadow" she replied coldly, her eyes dull and staring straight ahead as if he wasn't even there "Brindlemist was kind and pure, a beautiful soul this frigid clan didn't deserve" everything Roseshade had done, had been for her. Running away when their original clan got attacked, jumping into the frigid water that had brought them to WinterClan, training hard to be a strong warrior in order to protect her, accepting the position of witch to gain status and influence that she needed to keep Brindlemist safe... She had sacrificed so much to keep Brindlemist safe and happy, and none of it mattered in the end. Death had still claimed Brindlemist.
"Yet for some reason she cared for you, Robinring. The very cat who forced her sister into a loveless marriage, the cat who made me the laughing stock of the clan, the cat who caused me to be cursed.... If you had just backed down, Brindlemist would still be here with me" was she lashing out a bit unfairly? Probably, but in her mind this had all started the moment he had walked into her life "You are a controlling jerk, who lies and manipulates. You had my sister fooled, but I see through you Robinring. You know her last request of me? It wasn't to be there with her, or to ease her suffering. It was to give you a chance" she nearly spat the last sentence out "YOU. Of all the things she could have asked of me, she asked that"
Her cold fury came as a relief. He didn't know how to navigate those quiet moments between them, where a sense of normality was overshadowed by their history, or when she was quiet and grieving. Her anger, though, was familiar: he knew how to handle that.
His familiar stone mask didn't shift as she blamed him for everything in her life, and though he could have refuted her arguments, he did not. He offered no indication that he even heard the violence in her words, not until she spoke Brindlemist's final words. His reaction was tiny, immediately rectified, but for just a moment -- he flinched.
Maybe, when it came to best friends, she had been a good one. Too late now.
Robinring leveled a look back at her with those icy robin blue eyes. "And why do you think she asked that?"

"Isn't that clear?"
Answering his question with her own, the bitterness of it lingering on her tongue. Roseshade wrapped her tail tightly around herself, watching as for the first time something she said had struck a chord in the cat before her. The flinch small, but it was there. Her sister so easily placing her trust in others, unable to see why Robinring had approached her. Letting her guard down and letting him weasel his way into her heart so that he could get toto Roseshade. To use the only cat she cared about, to force himself further into her life Cleaver
"I think it is," he agreed easily, "but I suspect we have very different ideas of what is clear." The tip of his tail tapped a light beat upon the ground. "Brindlemist was my friend. She asked you to give me a chance because she saw more than you did. She wasn't a dumb cat, she saw what you just, she just knew to look deeper."

"You came into my life out of the blue, forcing me into a marriage that I didn't want, and I still have yet to receive even a sliver of an explanation from you" she spat, her tail curling tightly around her body "You manipulative and calculating, not afraid to push the limits to get what you want. My sister wasn't a dumb cat, but she was far to trusting. Willing to give even the darkest of sinners the benefit of the doubt, so it really such a wonder? It has always been that way. Brindlemist allowing anyone and everyone into her life, leaving me to protect her from not only them but herself" yet she couldn't protect her sister from this... She had failed.
"She may have trusted you, but I do not. At every turn you only give me more and more reasons that I should not. To date, you have yet to even tell me the reason you pushed so hard for our marriage, and yet you ask me to trust you? You forced me to marry you without so much as an incling as to why. Yet you want TRUST from me? TRUST when you can't even tell me the truth?"
"It doesn't matter, Roseshade." His voice was quieter when he answered, almost soft, but it did not disguise the ice beneath. The calculating cold. It was ever-present, but it was stronger now. "It doesn't matter why I asked to be your mate because I am now. She understood that. She trusted me. Why should you trust me?" He held her gaze for a long moment.
"Because you have no one else. Brindlemist is gone. I was at your side when it happened. For Borealis's sake, Roseshade, he told you to try and be with me, placed a curse to make it happen. Do you think your god makes mistakes?"

“It doesn’t just matter Robinring, it’s everything”
The golden she-cat shifted, moving away from Robinring to stare out over the newly fallen snow “you ask for trust, yet give none in return” she had withdrawn, reigned in her emotions, distancing herself from everything and hiding her feelings away once more “Better alone, than to sleep with a snake in your den” she replied curtly “Just waiting for it to strike from darkness when you least expect it”
