It wasn't something that was decided on a whim one night while he was gazing up at the beauties of his life. It couldn't be that easy, of course, nothing ever was when it came to the life and times of a WinterClan tom. Still, while others may have struggled over leaving behind family or the only world they've ever known, it was a princess among toads, a beautiful apprentice with a dilute tortoiseshell coat and the most awe-inspiring jewels for eyes that kept his heart from soaring forward and leaving this frozen tundra behind.
She was why he was here now, gazing up at the blanket of lights above his head and the treetops, lying on his back in the snow and ignoring the way the cold wet clung to his outer coat and instead focusing on what he was going to say to her. This would be their final night together. Their last goodbye. He wanted to make this adventure a worthwhile one for her, one that would leave her with the best of memories for her to carry when she was feeling sad or lonely in this desolate winter.
Ear flicking at the sound of approaching pawsteps, Chasingpaw sat up and looked in its direction.

“You’ll catch a cold lying in the snow like that.”
Subtlepaw offered Chasingpaw a small smile, a rarity for the icy apprentice that held everything inside. Emotions were a weakness in Winterclan. One had to be as cold as the snow around them if they wanted to survive in this harsh clan. But around Chasingpaw? It was so easy to let those emotions run free. Perhaps that is why she was so nervous when he asked her to meet him here tonight. The tortoiseshell she-cat couldn’t fight the bad feeling that bubbled in her gut, but she did her best to push it down. Subtlepaw didn’t want to ruin her time with the charming apprentice.
“And what do the stars hold for you this night?” She asked before glancing up at the sky. “Any news of a new adventure? Find a way to finally make me fly?”
A soft chuckle — more a sharp exhalation of breath than a true laugh — escaped his maw and he laid back down to gaze up at the skies. There was a small pull at the corner of his mouth, the hint of a smile, but even so there was a stinging behind his eyes at the reminder. He never had shown her how to use her wings, had he? He’d never gotten close enough to give her a chance to see what lie beyond the borders of the wonderland she called her home. Bitter regret nibbled at the edges of his heart, yet he still couldn’t find it enough to keep him from following through on his mission.
“They do hold news, actually.” He began, faltering with his words in the beginning but quickly gaining confidence along with the momentum of his conversation, “They bring me one of the greatest adventures of my life. I’d be a fool to turn up the opportunity.” The tom swallowed.
“But perhaps I am.” He turned his head to look up at her. “Subtlepaw...”
What could he possibly say to convey the turmoil inside his head without turning her away? Would it be easier to have her angry at him, to forget about him so that he didn’t feel he was betraying her? Or...
“Subtlepaw, will you dream with me? For just a little bit. Come with me to another world where some things haven’t yet happened and some things... things you’d never even believe could come true.”

The apprentice paused for a brief moment at the catch in his voice. That didn't sound like him at all. Her feeling of dread settled deep within her chest as she looked Chasingpaw over. He didn't appear hurt... he seemed... fine for the most part. But... something seemed wrong. The tortoiseshell flicked her ears as she swallowed the nerves that threatened to overtake her. Instead, she sauntered over to him and laid down beside him in the snow.
"Another world you say?" Subtlepaw said with a soft purr. "And what world shall we go to? Perhaps one... without clans? Or rules?" She inquired. "Or something more... fantastical? Perhaps with... dragons? Magic? Tell me, what world will you take me to tonight?"
Chasingpaw gazed at the stars above him, taking in what courage he could find from them before he released his words, "A world where you can be anyone you want to be. Where you can dance on clouds if you'd like, or fly, or..." he turned his head and looked at her, eyes locked on hers, "freely love who you want to love." Nerves prickled in his belly but he soldiered on. "Subtlepaw," he murmured and sat up, his back to the night, his gaze solely focused on her, "since the moment I've met you, it's been an adventure. One that I've never wanted to back down from. Somehow, you've managed to turn my world completely on its head. You're wonderful, breathtaking, kind, gentle, sweet, and strong in so many different ways. In the few short moons we've gotten close, you've become everything to me." He inhaled a deep breath. "When you were betrothed to Deathpaw, I realized just how much you meant to me. Perhaps I always knew, deep down, but I wasn't able to see it until I thought I would lose you forever."
The apprentice scooted closer to her. "Subtlepaw, you are my everything and I love you. I sincerely hope you know that. You don't have to reciprocate or say anything now. I just wanted you to know." He smiled a bit, but looked away, grief on his face. "And I wanted to make sure you knew that before I left."

A world where she could be anyone… if only it wasn’t a fantasy. A mere dream she could only attain outside of the camp walls when it was only her and Chasingpaw. Subtlepaw didn’t bother to hide the sigh that slipped past her lips. To love freely… such a thing wasn’t possible in her reality. In her world, the princess was still forced to marry the prince… not her knight.
The tortoiseshell flicked her ears at the sound of her name. She glanced up at Chasingpaw, entranced by the serious look on the tom’s face. It only made her bad feeling worse. The apprentice slowly sat back up, tilting her head at the sudden confession that flooded out of Chasingpaw.
“I wish you wouldn’t bring him up now…” Subtlepaw mewed quietly, glancing away from him for a moment before she looked back up at him. She didn’t want to talk about her betrothal to the sovereign’s son. It was something she desperately wanted to forget, especially when she was with Chasingpaw “At least… not now. Not in our world-”
She was never able to finish her sentence. Subtlepaw could only stare at her adventurer in shock as his confession rang through her ears. Her heart skipped a beat before it resumed hammering in her chest, and if there was any feeling of happiness brewing within her it was quickly smashed into pieces.
“What are you talking about?” She whispered. Her amber eyes grew wide with the shock of his confession, and she could feel herself backing away from him a bit. It was as if he had slapped her. “What do you mean you’re leaving, Chasingpaw?”
Agony flashed across his gaze and tears burned behind his eyes at the broken expression on her face, and while his heart howled, he found himself standing and padding closer to her, desperate to offer her what comfort he could, even as he knew he'd break her more with his words. "Princess... we both know this isn't a world where the unworthy are treated with kindness. Where the princess can be with the pauper. I love you more than anything, but things are getting worse in our home. If I want to see a future for myself or for us, I have to do what's best for both of us. If you're caught with me, you could get hurt. I don't care what happens to me, but I don't want to see you suffer because of me." He grimaced. "Even if that may mean I'm the one who hurts you."
He sighed and sat down, ears drooped and head down. "Everything I do, I do because I love you. All I ever wanted was to offer you a sanctuary and happiness. But even then I've failed. I'm so sorry, my princess." He inhaled a deep, shuddering breath. "I wish I could give you everything you deserve, desire, and more. But I can't do that here." He glanced at her with pain. "But we may have a chance somewhere else."
He padded closer to her and gazed into her eyes. "While I was on guard duty, I met a warrior of another clan. She offered me a deal that would benefit the both of us." He tilted his head. "She is our ticket out of here. Through her, I've garnered us safe passage out of here and to a new world, one that we can create and tend to, one that we don't have to leave come sunrise each night." He smiled at her a bit. "One where we could be together always."

Subtlepaw’s head reeled with his words. The apprentice shook her head as she fought to keep the wave of emotions she felt deep within her heart at bay.
“How is this best for us…!?” The tortoiseshell snapped weakly, her voice cracking as she looked up at him with a weak glare. “This… you can’t leave, Chasingpaw…! If you leave… if… you’ll…”
Subtlepaw couldn’t get her words out. They were trapped deep within her throat, threatening to choke her as she stared at the snow beneath her paws. Everything had become so blurry all of a sudden. Was it because she couldn’t breath? Or was it because of the tears welling within her eyes? Chasingpaw’s voice seemed so distant now, but she could feel him beside her. This couldn’t be real. No this had to be a nightmare. Chasingpaw couldn’t leave her. She needed him to stay. If he left… if he left she’d be stuck in her black and white world. Stuck in this cold, unforgiving tundra where she would be forced day in and out to be someone she despised. Everything came crashing down around her all at once. What he was asking her to do, it was impossible. No one left Winterclan. If he was caught…
Subtlepaw swallowed thickly before she looked away. Her heart screamed at her to go with him. To run away with him on this grand adventure, their biggest one yet. She could go with him and finally spread her wings. But she was scared. Subtlepaw was petrified of what lay ahead of her, even with Chasingpaw by her side. Winterclan was all she knew.
“Chasingpaw, please…” She choked out, not wanting to think about what they would do to him. “We… you can’t… stay. Please, stay. Don’t… if you’re caught… can’t we figure something out? We’re clever enough, aren’t we? We can think of something else, we have to…! Just… I can’t…”
Chasingpaw's jaw clenched and he shut his eyes tight, inhaling a sharp breath of pain. He wished he could say he understood her struggle; and while it made sense to him, he would never have the same experience she did. She was from an entirely different family; not just on another social tier, but also a family that had such high expectations. His family had all but disintegrated; his sister was gone, the rest of his siblings were nowhere to be found, either left or were otherwise gone from this world by... other means. He hadn't seen his parents for seasons. His entire world had shattered and only Subtlepaw had kept it together, but how long could the glue hold when there were those in his clan, the majority of those that were supposed to stand up for one another, that tried to bust it into pieces again?
He swallowed and pressed tightly against her, head resting atop her own, attempting to pull her as close to him as he could, not only trying to offer her what comfort he could, but trying to find comfort himself in her touch and in her scent. He knew what he was asking from her wasn't easy and she was scared; still, he wanted to give her the chance to fly farther and longer than she ever had with him before. If they left, they could go on their adventure and it would never have to end. He inhaled her scent as a way to calm himself. He couldn't force her to choose him over her family; he would never want to put her in that situation. He had offered her the chance and she had the right to choose for herself what path she would take. He would never stop loving her, no matter her decision.
And so...
"Listen," he murmured against the top of her head. He closed his eyes and pulled away from her a bit to look into her eyes. "Listen, darling." He gazed at her with a softness reserved only for her. "This path has been placed before me long before I ever thought it existed. It's only that on this day, I've stumbled across it." He smiled softly, though it struggled to meet his eyes. "The path I'm on right now in WinterClan is one that will end at a cliff's edge. I need to travel a new path, one that may be winding and stretching for many seasons to come. I would love to have you at my side, discovering it together. But I won't make you choose between me and all you've known." He pressed his muzzle against the top of her head, breathing softly.
"So for tonight." He whispered. "Let's enjoy what time we have together and build our final world." He smiled at her, tears in his eyes. "And let's make it strong enough that no matter the distance, it will always be with us."

His silence only served as knives twisting further into her heart. Why wasn’t he saying anything? What was he thinking about? Was he reconsidering everything? Subtlepaw hoped beyond anything that he was. But then he had pulled her close, his scent engulfing her like a warm breeze. The tortoiseshell leaned against him, burying her face into his fur and never wanting to leave. As a young kit she had avoided making friends. There was a reason for it… she knew they wouldn’t last, or that they would want something from her eventually. So she had put up her walls and acted as though she needed no one. But Chasingpaw had seen through her facade… he broke through her walls and filled her world with bright colors that she had never even realized existed. Now they were all fading as her tears soaked into his fur at the thought of him leaving.
If he left, she would never see him again. Chasingpaw would never be allowed to step foot on Winterclan territory for the rest of his life. She’d be thrust back into her frozen world… But the unforgiving tundra was also killing her bright-eyed adventurer. Subtlepaw didn’t want to believe it… she wanted to be wrong. But his words only confirmed it… she would catch glimpses of him every now and then in camp. His spark would dwindle every now and then, until it seemed as though it would go out for good. It killed her to watch it and not be able to do anything about it. He deserved to live… to chase the stars that he loved so dearly. As much as Subtlepaw wanted to scream at him, beg him to stay with her, she wanted him to be able to live freely and not feel trapped. He wasn’t the one that was forced to remain trapped, and she would sooner die herself than keep him trapped in this prison with her.
“Alright…” Subtlepaw muttered, clearing her throat as she blinked the rest of the tears away. “In this world… are we able to catch the stars? Save some stardust for ourselves..?”
A sad smile spread across his lips and he brushed his cheek against hers. "Yes. We will race the stars, catch them, dance with them. We will be one with them." He breathed and gazed up at the skies, though not for long. It was as though he was compelled not to look away from her for long; desperate he not forget her face, though internally he knew that could never happen. He had her etched into his memory; one doesn't forget the love of his life so easily.
"Perhaps we will even meet other cats in this world. Cats made of stardust and light, who dream of our world like we dream of theirs."

“Weave together another world for me then… with these cats made of stardust…” She said quietly. Subtlepaw was almost afraid she had been too quiet. The tortoiseshell cleared her throat before she looked up at Chasingpaw with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
“You’re so much better at it than I am… my imagination isn’t as free as yours yet.” She admitted sheepishly. It felt as though she had to force the playful words out of her throat. All she wanted to do was cry and scream, beg him to stay. But doing that would only hurt him. Subtlepaw couldn’t do that to him. Not for a second time this night. What would she do, when she would be forced to watch him leave knowing that he would never be welcomed back?
Stop it, She chided herself. That was the last thing she should be thinking about right now. Why worry about what was to come when she should be enjoying her time with her adventurer now.
“Perhaps these cats can teach us to dance as well, but what would we teach them in return?”
