Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. Crookedbramble had heard that across the forest and mountain range, there seemed to be a burst of love in the air. By now, the gossip Prommageddon of SwiftClan had already made it to SpringClan, and he was sure that there were other places that were just as happy to get on the romance trail. It had made him think about his life as a single tom. He'd never particularly wanted kids, but perhaps there was soemthing about settling down that was appealing. Still, he had limited options. He hadn't always been the most social of cats, and he hadn't spent any time pining over any cat in particular. This would make whatever adventure to love he was about to embark on... interesting.
At least it would give him something to do, right? And the courtship process was filled with bumps and experimentation, so if nothing else, he'd have his time occupied for a while. "Might as well try," he murmured to himself, before walking towards the first single cat he saw.
Was Raggedpaw single? The jury was still out on that.
If you asked her, the answer was no. If you asked anyone else in the clan, they'd whisper that the poor, delusional apprentice just couldn't accept facts.
Still, she did her best to ignore this and cling to whatever shreds of hope she could scrounge together that one day, Coralpaw, the (not) mother of her totally-not-real kits (that were real but she denied it poorly) would love her. She didn't really notice anyone else, particularly Crookedbramble, until he approached her out of the blue. She startled a little and shuffled her burned paws, ears flicking back as she was broken out of her reverie. "Hi there," she greeted, trying to inject her usual cheer into her tone but failing.
"You look like you've got something on your mind," he meowed, "I thought I might as well check in on you." Raggedpaw was a little... young for his taste, but he supposed he'd only been promoted to warrior about a year ago, so was the age gap that large? And even if it was, did he care? Was he really searching for love, or an occupation of his time? All of the questions had ambiguous answers, and he wasn't sure he cared to find out.
"Oh, you know," giggled the apprentice in a manner just as ambiguous as the answers to his existential questions. She didn't really know herself what she meant by that, but he must, right? He was a warrior after all and warriors knew all the facts of life, whether or not his promotion was not a super long time ago. "What's it like being a warrior and being able to do whatever you want? Do you do a bunch of fun stuff all the time? Do you have a mate yet? Aren't cats supposed to immediately get mates once they become warriors?" She wasn't sure where she heard that from, but it had filled her with hope that maybe Coralpaw would accept her when they got promoted.
"Lots of questions there, sweetpea," he offered with a wink and a chuckle. Oh, to have the love of life that came from being young, he thought, before realizing the irony of the fact that his internal monologue positioned himself as a ninety year old elder instead of a strapping young warrior. Well, strapping wasn't probably the best term for him, his crooked jaw probably got in the way of it, but the sentiment still stood.
"Unfortunately, I don't get to do what I want most times. Hate to break it to you, but the work never stops." He offered a smile that was naturally twisted, but it was genuine enough. "You do get out of cleaning the elder's den, though. That I do not miss."
He then paused at her other questions. "Some do," he meowed with a shrug. "Not everyone, though. Me? I haven't found the right cat." It wasn't a lie, but it also obscured the fact that until today, he hadn't been looking. "How bout you? Got a lover you'll marry once you're promoted?"
She was a little disheartened to know that warriorhood did not equate to no rules. What was the point of it then? "Well that's pretty lame. Why am I doing all this work as an apprentice to just do more work as a warrior?" Becoming an elder sounded a lot better right about now. She could laze around all day and have apprentices much like herself to change her bedding whenever she saw fit. A nice, easy life for sure.
At his follow-up, her ears grew hot and Raggedpaw glanced away, fidgeting slightly. "N-no," she also lied, to a less convincing degree. "No one loves me. I'm just poor, ugly Raggedpaw. No one would love me anyway, with my legs being all gross..." She gestured to her two front legs, which were hairless and scarred by old burn wounds. She didn't seem to realize that she was preaching to the choir, Crookedbramble's crooked face an afterthought. It was different anyway! She was ugly and he was...pretty handsome, if she thought about it.
Well, if he cared about morals, the morality of this situation was getting... increasingly dark grey. But, he would try to get over it. After all, wouldn't it be just the perfect couple? The scarred and the twisted? He flicked his ear at the thought- it was bitter and unfair, but he wondered if there was truth in it.
"Your legs aren't gross," he reassured her with a smile. "My mama, may she rest in pieces," he said that intentionally with a little hint of laughter in his gaze, "had one piece of wisdom. It is percisely what makes us beautiful." His words were kind and smooth, inviting even.
Raggedpaw's ears grew a little hot at the compliment and she fidgeted under Crookedbramble's gaze. "Thanks," she murmured shyly, a little surprised by her bashfulness. Her whiskers did, however, twitch at his prior comment, and her head tilted. "I don't remember my mom. Was yours nice? She sounds nice. Goldengriffon is kinda like my dad and he's very nice, but Dancingdragon..." She trailed off. She wasn't sure of the specifics of Dancingdragon's relationship with the deputy, but they seemed to spend a lot of time together, and that meant the sassy white she-cat spent an equal amount of time with Raggedpaw-- who couldn't take a hint of when to leave the pair alone.
He smiled his crooked smile at her bashfulness. It was slightly amusing to him, but it meant that he was doing at least something relatively effectively. Making her feel something, which if his goal was to practice wooing cats, feeling something was the first step. "She was... neutral. Had a loud bark and even bigger bite, but every once in a while she gave a gem of wisdom." He chuckled slightly at the memories of his mother, the old bat. "She's been gone for a while now, though. The memories are fading," he admitted, mostly to make her feel better that she dind't remember much about her own mother.
He then smiled at her. "That's the beautiful thing, Raggedpaw. Even if we don't know much about our blood family, we can still make a new one. That's part of the reason I stick around here, yeah?"
Raggedpaw nodded her agreement, even if his comment did seem...mildly suggestive. She'd been wrong before about that (and a lot of other things) so she was trying to keep to her new years resolution of not reading into things that weren't there. "Yeah! I think it's super fun being part of such a big family like SpringClan," she added innocently. "Jetstar and Goldengriffon are like the mom and dad, and we're all the kids!" Did that make her love for Coralpaw incest? And was it wrong that she found her supposed brother pretty attractive? Maybe that wasn't the simile she should have gone with.
