Plot: Agonywail has been tasked with dealing with the prisoners has their first task as Knight of the Wise. A brief check in and evaluation to help better understand their new role, but what will happen next? Bones - cookie, Crimsonrose - Jetclaw, Rodent & Snowbunny - Faith, Sen - Honeystorm, Frigidpaw - pao, Agonywail - stardance
After having stood as a guard of the prison for many moons, it was an adjustment to being on the other side.
Crimsonrose did feel bad she'd broken her promise to Mysteryleaf about staying with her kits till they were apprentice aged, at least. But she'd done what she felt was right.
The former Knight turned DayClan cat turned Prisoner, sat staring off into the distance. Contemplating the situation. They would keep her and the other prisoners hungry and weak and do their best to keep them down.
Rodent was one of the only well kept prisoners, that much was obvious from the comfortable sleeping situation to his shiny pelt. He was worked like a dog around the camp probably more so than most of the prisoners. Wolftundra had done a fair enough job of training him to be a good domestic pet, which made him more trustworthy than the others. It was why he was stuck with a name like Rodent, it was his pet name. One that if he didn't learn to embrace he would be treated the same as the rest of the prisoners. However he did know Crimsonrose, back when he was in DayClan as Wishbone, before he went on a heroic mission to try and save Sweetiepeach and her kits and wound up in prison.
"You can have my leftovers," Rodent offered to Crimsonrose in a low whisper. Since he was a bit more well fed being a pet he acquired more food than the rest. Food that still wasn't enough to keep him from feeling satisfied, but to him, Crimsonrose was his clanmate and clanmates shared their prey so long as no one was watching.
Today was one of the rare days Snowbunny was allowed out from isolation. His mate being the knight of the guards kept him well fed enough, but he trembled from the icy water he was forced to sleep in, his limbs numb. Snowbunny used to be a prisoner when he was almost a year old, then he was promoted to the knight of the stars, then he was demoted back to prisoner when he defended the demon kits. He was marked with the history of his mistakes from his scars. One particularly detailed scar was between his head and neck from Innocentia when he was captured in the league. The other scars that riddled his body were from the demons, tearing him a part on a daily basis. A punishment that Wintrystar set up for him to start respecting her more and hate the demons.
His tail dragged across the ground like it were broken as he shakily moved to the center of the pit in order to try and get some sunlight soaked up in his freezing pelt.
Agonywail was still in shock. He, an outsider, chosen to be a Knight. It really made no sense whatsoever in his mind, but Wintrystar's intelligence far surpassed his own. Maybe she had a plan for him, and he had to fill whatever that part was. So he found himself walking up to the prison.
The charcoal bengal gave a nod to the guards as he walked past. And then he stopped. What did he do now? He sat just inside the entrance for a minute. Well... maybe, no. The tom had no idea what he as doing. Damn it. As he felt the guard's gazes turn to him, the tom got up and entered the common area. He sat down and shuffled his paws. "Attention prisoner... scum!" He smirked at what he thought was a cleaver insult. "I am your new Knight of the Wise! I demand your respect." He outsider heritage was betrayed by his rolled r's and deeper vowels. "Is that clear, scum?"
Rodent's attention turned to the new tom who had entered the prison, at first hoping it was Wolftundra only to be disappointed. It was tough enough having to be degraded by one egotistic maniac, a second would no doubt only add to the humiliation. "Yes." Rodent replied back, pushing back his pride as he so often did in order to not be awarded a slap for a sarcastic retort.
"Weren't you that kid that couldn't speak English?" Snowbunny asked, still shaking from the cold water on his pelt. He really hoped Wintrystar would decide he learned his lesson soon so he could become a warrior again. It felt like a different limb of his body went numb everyday.
Bones was sitting away from the other prisoners, grimacing at the cold. How stupid of him to come to this clan, all for a she-cat who couldn't even be his mate. When a cat from outside approached, he hunkered down, trying to stay in the shadows. The moment he was free, he was leaving this awful place.
"Yes, I was that kid. But now I speak it well. Besides, we wouldn't need to speak the same language to understand each other." This tom raised his voice to him, and he had to be punished, but how? Easy enough. Howlingnight beat Agonywail enough to understand how to inflict pain, and make it last. The charcoal bengal stalked forward until he towered over Snowbunny. His lips curled up into a cruel grin. "Snowbunny, is it?" He grabbed his head and smashed it into the cave floor. "I almost forgot your name. You're so inconsesequent... incon-se-quent-yul... in-con-se-quen-tial that I forgot who you were, and what gave you the right to speak like that. But I remembered." He lifted his head up, and again smashed his jaw onto the cave floor. "Nothing. So, here's what we're going to do." He pulled the tom to his paws by his scruff. "You see that scrap of fur over there?" He pointed to Bones. "You're going to strike him until I tell you to stop. Claws unsheathed. I want to see blood."
Snowbunny's ears didn't flatten, but his hardened expression did falter seeing the tom standing over him. He was a Regime cat, short for the benefit of roaming through tunnels, but here in the prison it didn't serve him well. He flinched before Agonywail had even reached out for him, he had been through this at the paws of numerous cats. He cried out as his face hit the cold stone floor dazing him briefly as Agonywail's words echoed in his mind. He wasn't as prepared the second time, blacking out for six seconds before coming too. His body was weaker than any prisoner, he wasn't as starved as the rest thanks to Frostcloud, but he was regularly beaten and only one bad incident away from being crippled. Snowbunny stared at the ground as it moved further away when Agonywail stood him up, he felt helpless at how easily the tom could lift him up.
"Let me tell you," Snowbunny said as he moved forward, trembling at a slow pace from the frostbite, "I came to WinterClan as a prisoner of war, put to work doing hard labor, it felt like a sign from above when Wintrystar didn't just accept me as a member, but a knight. But it was worse than I could imagine, beating on the brave, harming the innocent. You're too young to go around ruining lives." He said, stopping in front of Bones, but he didn't strike, instead collapsing to the ground, having no strength in him to lie down with ease. He was defiant to the orders, he refused to be like the people who beat him everyday, hurting when ordered to, he'd rather die.
The charcoal bengal sighed as he followed behind the slow moving tom. "You should have counted your blessings. You had what cats here dreamed of." The Knight growled as the other tom fell to the floor. "You know, the very thing that hurt you helped me." He walked in front of the tom and lifted his neck to proudly reveal the scar Howlingnight gave him. "Howlingnight beat me, an innocent apprentice, almost every night for a moon, and I became stronger because of it. He did me a favor, as you were doing to all those that you 'hurt'." The pride in his voice was glaring, borderline obnoxious. He saw that moon as the single most formative time in his life, and he valued what he learned there: perseverance, strength, mental toughness, and cruelty in all its aspects. He know how to inflict it, how to elevate it, and how to take it. Clearly, Snowbunny needed a lesson in all three.
"Here's the thing:" He leaned into Snowbunny's ear. "I don't have to ruin your life; you did that yourself. But one of the little demons is in this prison. Where, I do not know. But I am good friends with Howlingnight, and I could her life much harder." He unsheathed his claws and struck downward towards head, but stopped at the last second. Instead, he just lightly patted his head. "You can stop me from doing that by making this poor thing bleed. Someone's going to get hurt today because of you." He chuckled. "See? Not much has changed since you were a Knight."
Snowbunny leaned up his chin from the ground, a smile curved along his lips like he was about to agree before flattening his lips into a cold stiff expression, "Please, you'll hurt that girl with or without my influence. What are you going to do to her? Drown her seven times instead of feeding her to a badger if I help? How about this, you're not the only new knight around. Tell me, has the new knight of the stars gotten any prophecies or omens from the gods? Here's my theory, Wintrystar got power hungry and demoted me, but I'm still the deities favorite. I still have as much power as I did when I was a knight. So smack me around, see how much abuse I can take so the moment you come begging for me you'll know there's nothing you can do to make me help you."
Snowbunny began to leisurely roll away from Agonywail so casually anyone would think that he'd been rolling his entire life instead of walking. No one so far had been able to break his spirits, Wintrystar, Howlingnight, and even some of the demons had tried, but no amount of pain ever made him submit.
He thought that he had him under control with that. Agonywail never anticipated that comeback. He knew the tom sympathized with the kittens, and he maybe even cared for them. Damn it. His lip curled up as the tom finished speaking. But he wasn't done yet. He still had more ammunition. As the tom rolled away Agonywail bended over and grabbed Snowbunny's tail. He gave it a hard yank to drag the tom back underneath. "Listen closely. I know your wife is pregnant. If you don't do as I say, I will make sure you don't see your kits for moons. If you listen to me, I may just find it in me to... endorse a probationary period for you."
Even if he said yes, the tom had to punish Snowbunny for his insubordination. Beyond beating Bones, the tom had some other things circulating in his mind.
Snowbunny's challenging demeanor flipped completely into a grim expression, his ears pressing against his head. One way or another WinterClan always found a way of keeping their victims well behaved. He nodded his bruised face, it was easy to tell from his white pelt just how many times he'd been beaten since his fall from grace, which had been an insufferable amount. His most noticeable scars were on his forehead and running along from his chin down to his flank. Yet it was the threat of losing his opportunity to support Frostcloud that kept him docile.
"That's kind of you... Knight of the wise, I will follow your orders," He promised, remembering when it was Lionwhisper as knight of the wise. He had been a good tom, one far more worthy of the role than Agonywail was. Snowbunny quickly wiggled out from under Agonywail instead approaching Bones. He slashed at Bones, going for the shoulders, than his hind legs, he looked like had never fought a day in his life before, which he hadn't. Growing up in the Regime he was a hunter, never learning to fight, only to track and kill. Not to mention his constant beatings left him sore and the pain too unbearable to move around a whole lot, but the attempt was made.
Bones watched the entire encounter with his ears completely flat, a low warning growl leaving his mouth unbidden at the threat. When Snowbunny finally came at him, the old rogue was ready. He let the tom swipe at his legs. Little scrapes were nothing compared to what he had endured before. Finally, Bones sighed and felt his ears slip back up. Snowbunny was no threat to him, not beaten as he was anyway. The large tom placed a heavy paw on the other one's spine, trying to get him to stop.
He looked up at Agonywail, extremely agitated. His tail was flipping side to side as he struggled to keep Snowbunny from hurting either of them on accident. When a claw snagged his pelt, he ignored it. "Why is this so fun for you, clan cat? We never did this in the city. We fought for food and for homes. Not to see blood." Come to the city when I get out of here, he wanted to add. I'll be stronger, and I'll show you blood then.
The charcoal bengal was glad to see Snowbunny's will bend like rubber. Now, if he actually followed through with it, that would be a decision for another day. Maybe he would ask for Howlingnight's thoughts on it. Agonywail trusted him more than anyone else, and maybe how to get Snowbunny to put some power behind those pitiful strikes. Agonywail couldn't help to stop his laughter at Snowbunny's pathetic strikes. It looked like a kit could do a better job. Bones just looked annoyed more than anything else, which was fine with him. Bones didn't need punishment yet.
His lip curled up as he looked down on Bones. "Well, who ever said this was a fight, prisoner? This is a punishment, one your friend is doing remarkably horrible at." He pushed Snowbunny away with a harsh shove before returning his attention to Bones. "Now, tell me what your name is."
A punishment, huh? Yeah, that was fair. He should definitely be punished for being stupid enough to join a clan. The tom had half a mind not to answer Agonywail, but pushing this obviously crazy cat when he had the upper hand didn't seem smart. "It's Bones," he replied, tail swiping back and forth. "And there's a reason for it, clan cat." Now back off. The distaste was evident in his voice. But getting this cat to leave him alone and move to a new target didn't seem likely at the moment. Maybe he could have the Knight move his attention back to Snowbunny.
Agonywail narrowed his eyes. Bones may have not intended to irk the Knight, but he did. "Oh, really? Does this cat think he is something else?" He growled as he closed the gap between him and Bones. "Does this cat think he is anything at all?" This time he took a swipe at Bones, and landed it on his shoulder. "You don't tell me what to do. Is that clear?" He knew this tom wouldn't back off, and he couldn't let this stand. But he had other ideas brewing, other things that might get this tom to be more docile.
The claws hit his shoulder and Bones couldn't stop himself from hissing aloud. "I won't tell you what to do, Knight. But I will make you."
Bones was large, but he was so scrawny after being here that there wasn't half the amount of strength in his launch as there should have been. He attempted to land on Agonywail, claws out and ready to put up a fight. If it killed him, it killed him. He was so tired of being pushed around. Bones wouldn't have minded fighting for these cats, killing for them if he had to. But being left to die here in this wet place and rot was no way to live.
I won't tell you what to do, Knight. But I will make you. Agonywail narrowed his eyes at the challenge and curled his lip. This should be fun. When he saw Bones turn and leap, the tom didn't try to evade it or anything graceful. Agonywail leaped and met him in mid-air. Howlingnight's training was simple and brutish, and that was the warrior he had become. His fighting style had very little grace, it relied on his superior strength and ability to manage pain to win.
For this fight, he knew it would be enough. A half-trained apprentice could take on these prisoners. He met Bones mid-air and sent his shoulder into the tom's face before trying to grapple onto the tom's neck.
Bones let out a loud grunt as he was smacked with the other tom's shoulder right to his face. Front legs wrapped around his neck and the prisoner let out an extended whine, ears completely back and teeth bared. He tried to scrabble with his back claws at Agonywail's belly, hoping to make purchase.
Bones wanted to say he couldn't believe none of the other prisoners were fighting back also, but truthfully, he wasn't surprised. They must either believe they were stuck as prisoners or the Knight had dirt on them that kept them complacent, such as Snowbunny's situation.
But there was nothing of import to him here. The cat he'd met as Jaguarpaw was now older and married, and Bones was tired of being stuck in prison. If they weren't going to let him out or give him a purpose, he might as well go out with the fiercest fight possible. So fight he did, using every ounce of strength left in him. It wasn't much, and he knew he'd drop soon of sheer exhaustion. His size meant nothing when cats like Agonywail were actually fed and trained for this.
Crimsonrose was forced to promptly devour the extra scraps promptly from Rodent, practically swallowing them whole in her haste to remove evidence of the other cats generosity.
She'd been a guard once, she knew the game.
As she watched Agonywail and Snowbunny interact the ginger she cat worked to turn over in her mind the best way to handle this situation. Eventually Agonywail hit on the thing that Snowbunny cared about most and it set Crimsonrose's teeth on edge.
'When did WinterClan become the league? Leatherstar is rolling in his grave.' The ginger she cat thought fury building.
Then when Agonywail won out by finding the way to blackmail Snowbunny fury rose in Crimsonrose.
"Stay back," She instructed Rodent. The less trouble he caused himself the better.
Agonywail was half right, starvation certainly weakened the lot of them.
But Crimsonrose had been no stranger to starvation. Though she hadn't felt it's sharp claws in many many moons. She'd grown up in the league.
It was a harsh teacher, and Crimsonrose knew how to temper it. But this bullying of the prisoners (and their own cats) was pathetic. Crimsonrose was disgusted how pathetic the guards were. Wailing on their prisoners? When had WinterClan abandoned their honor so completely?
Crimsonrose had guarded the prison once, assisted several times over the course of her tenure as Shard, Frozen and then Knight of the Guard of course. This was foolishness.
With a snarl she broke out into a run and slammed into Agonywail, hooking a paw between him and Bones and wrenching him off, shoving him back for good measure. "If you think beating on one weaker makes you strong, you're wrong." She growled tail lashing. "I pity you, you're no knight you're a meek sheep, you've put on some horns and that makes you think you can wail on those who've tried to break rank."
There was no malice in her eyes as she continued. "But when something truly terrible comes... and it will, you'll be like lambs to the slaughter. So Knight of the wise, think carefully about what you want to do." Crimsonrose warned, bristling up. She hadn't been in the prison as long as some of the others, her muscles were still present and her size was undiminished.
Agonywail would not have such an easy fight against her, and Crimsonrose, unfortunately for him, had nothing to lose here.
