Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
He got a reprieve as another prisoner removed the guard. Bones watched Crimsonrose warily, taking the moment to breathe. He was surprised another cat had stepped in and was worried for her to a small extent. But she had way more muscle on her than he did, so at least she stood a chance. Bones rested on the ground, very slowly moving to a crouch. He would step in again once his clanmates - no, not clanmate! He didn't belong here - needed him to.
He felt the tom's claws at his belly, but he just didn't care. Bones had nothing on what Howlingnight did to him. He smile only grew at the pain, and he reached for the prisoner's neck with his jaws. Before his jaws could make contact with Bones's neck, he felt a force jerk him backwards off the tom. Crimsonrose's slam knocked him off Bones, and the shove made him tumble a bit. While his pain tolerance was beyond the average cat's he wasn't a particularly skilled fighter, a flaw he knew quite well. He knew even a weakened Crimsonrose could probably beat him one on one, not even considering the possibility of other cats stepping.
"I know I'm strong, I'm just making sure your friend here knows his place." His blazing amber eyes drifted between the two of them, and a spark passed through his eyes. Maybe he didn't need to fight them all. He laughed under his breath. Yeah. He could make them learn their place. "You all have an hour to think about how you've been insubordinate and prepare an apology to me. If you don't... you'll see." He waved his tail as he left the prison. "I hope to hear it soon."
(I'll do a quick time skip on my next post, let's wrap up this part of the thread)
Crimsonrose snorted. She turned to Bones. "You all right?" She asked, before glancing after Agonywail eyes narrowed.
She weighed the options in her mind. She was growing more and more angry with what WinterClan had become.
She didn't expect kindness to the prisoners, no absolutely not. But these unjustified beatings? Bullying?
'There truly is no honor in this place anymore.' Crimsonrose mused.
She scraped at the ground trying to think what the best course of action.
'Escape at this point,' The ginger she cat thought. 'If one can get out to get help then they can bring back healthy cats to intervene on behalf of all who are suffering here.'
She thought of Leatherstar, and a renewed spark of grief. 'Oh Leatherstar, if I'd known how far our clan has fallen I would've never rushed in so foolishly.' She thought.
"You all look so concerned, it's just an apology," Rodent yawned as he curled back up in his nest, really the only cat that had a nest, let alone one with a blanket of snowhare fur. He did have short fur though, it was one of the reasons he was allowed to freely walk around WinterClan so often. He had a natural leash that would prevent him from fleeing, there was no escaping for him, it was too cold to run away without knowing how to get out.
Snowbunny shakily sat up, he was beaten daily far too much to rebel against Agonywail, not to mention he didn't know how to fight, never needed to. He slouched, looking around, hoping his mate Frostcloud would appear. She was the real prison warden of this place. Instead he was going to have to grovel, which was one thing if he were a permanent resident of the prison, but he wasn't. He had a sentence he was serving before he would be put on probation and once that happened he knew Agonywail would be looking for him to mess up. Shaking out his pure white fur his sheepdog bangs fell right back over his eyes.
Crimsonrose shifted on her paws itching to pace, and even taking a few steps side to side, "Normally, I would agree, but this isn't normal, this isn't what WinterClan is." She muttered before stopping her movements forcing herself to remember the harsh claws in her belly that would be returning shortly, she needed to conserve energy.
But as she looked around at all the cats who looked at her as she spoke of this nonexistent WinterClan, she was reminded that to them this was WinterClan. They'd never known the clan under Leatherstar's leadership, or under Understar, or any others.
She bowed her head letting out a long breath, the itch to fight was burning under her pelt.
Then a thought occurred and she went over to Snowbunny, whom she'd learned had been a former knight "Do challenges still exist?" She asked. "When I was in WinterClan any prisoner could challenge a cat to a duel, if they won they earned their place back in WinterClan."
She had been so disheartened by what she'd seen that she'd felt a helplessness she hated. Crimsonrose could not fight a whole clan that obeyed Wintrystar, but she could do even less down in this pit.
She was a warrior. Crimsonrose hated the waste that Wintrystar had made of her clan, beating on her own cats.
'Even if Snowbunny says no, these cats are so shallow in their shaky pride, that perhaps I can play to my own strength. Taunt them that if they are so 'mighty' and 'deserving' of their place, then they should be able to take on one they're supposed to reign over.'
At the very least then Crimsonrose could either succeed and go from there, or she could die and rejoin Leatherstar and apologize to him for her failure.
"Um no, there's no challenge. I was a prisoner here first when I got caught as a cadet. I had to win a popular vote, which I did by doing chores and maintaining a good behavior. But for me Wintrystar sent me here for a set amount of time unlike everyone else," Snowbunny explained.
Crimsonrose scoffed. "Pathetic." She hissed ears flattening, "Wintrystar's made the clan weak." She growled turning away and shaking her head.
She'd never thought she'd meet a leader she felt was more pitiful than Understar. Who had fled when the ghosts showed up leaving it in Leatherstar's paws.
Until Sweetpine betrayed Leatherstar, and then Crimsonrose had just had to watch as the clan slowly crumbled.
When Wintrystar had taken over Crimsonrose had grown weary, and had seen in her what she'd thought she'd once seen in Leatherstar.
Instead, Wintrystar had squandered the clan.
Chores? Good behavior?!
Where was WinterClan's pride? Pride in welcoming the strong, and maintaining a fighting force!
They needed might not crouching low and groveling to their leader and her hoard of bullies.
The strongest had no need to lord their might over the weak, for they weren't so insecure in their position that they needed to punch down. Or so immune to pain and suffering they in turn unleashed it on those below them.
Crimsonrose took a deep breath then slowly let it out. "I see, thank you Snowbunny." She meowed softly.
The anger in her died and was replaced with a deep sadness. A sorrow for these cats, WinterClan had changed and Crimsonrose had ignored it. That had been her fault.
"I should've come with an army." Crimsonrose meowed softly, "As soon as my kits were born I should've waited and gone up to Goldenstar and told her to march on WinterClan. I was blind, and I owe you all an apology."
She'd watched these cats for a moon and she saw in some of them strength. Strength to sacrifice and suffer.
She didn't hold their ties against them. Snowbunny was stuck in a no win situation. Rodent was just doing the best he could. Bones was battered but still not broken. And even the poor young tom who had killed unintentionally.
These cats could've become warriors WinterClan would've been proud of once. She'd have loved to see their drive brought to life in a challenge for their place in the clan.
Now there was no reason to get stronger. Only numb themselves to the pain, and punch down so they and theirs didn't suffer.
"Oh yeah sure... I mean- you just called me pathetic a moment ago, but yeah, happy to get insulted I guess," Snowbunny muttered, but listened to her apology, "it's my fault, Wintrystar could sense my disloyalty so she arranged me with a mate. I thought she was hoping for Frostcloud to put me in my place, but I realize now she was just hoping we would have kits so she could control me. I'll have to grovel to Wintrystar soon so I can be there for my mate and future kits."
The small white tom curled back up into a ball, at least he was able to see other people. He was mostly left in freezing isolation chambers.
[Quick time skip! Feel free to have a warrior of yours hop in!]
It had been around an hour since Agonywail left the prison, and every moment of it for him was busy with setting up their punishment. WinterClan's arctic climate also gave it plenty of pine trees, and with pine trees came sap. Lots of it, and he needed every drop. He tore off a piece of bark from one of the trees, and then used it to hold onto the viscous, bitter fluid. When he walked back into the camp the tree bark had gigantic globs covering it, globs that would be easy enough for him to scoop up with his paw. As he walked towards the prison he motioned at some of the warriors hanging around to follow him. Whether they did or not, he did not care. Support would be great, but he could make them submit without it.
His dark coat barely contrasted with the stone cave as he entered the prison and swept his gaze around it. His eyes landed on Snowbunny before walking over to the poor tom and placing the tree bark down beside him. His amber eyes looked down on him for a moment before again scanning the prison. "Snowbunny, what did you do wrong? Tell me how you disrespected me, and therefore disrespected the Sovereign's will." He curled up his lip. "Tell me why you deserve to be trusted with your kits. Why won't you poison their minds with traitorous thoughts?"
Howlingnight grinned when Agonywail approached, following after him when he motioned for him to follow. Howlingnight was massive in size, coming from a family line of assassins and currently Wintrystar's mate, he had nearly equal power to the leader. Regardless of his skill and reputation though, he was glad to take the backseat and follow along with Agonywail. Wasn't everyday he got to watch his star student take the lead.
Snowbunny was too weak to try and make himself unnoticeable by Agonywail from moons of his muscles freezing up in the cold. He only forced himself to shift when he felt Agonywail put something down beside him, but was just as quickly distracted by the knight as he came into his line of sight. His ears flattened, he had to beg to Agonywail, he acted like he wanted an apology, but he knew that wasn't entirely it.
"I acted like... A disgrace when you came in. I was sarcastic and spoke back to you when you're my authority figure. I shouldn't have expected special treatment just because of who my mate is, I understand that now. And I would never poison the minds of my kits to be like me because I don't want them begging on the floor of a prison for mercy one day like I am to you," Snowbunny said honestly, his shoulders were slumped over, but he had already decided that he would lose all of pride if it meant being there for Frostcloud, he promised her.
His apology wasn't bad by any means, but he still wanted more. He disobeyed direct orders from a superior, while he was a prisoner no less. But his amber eyes remained fixed on the tom and his face contorted into something between a smile and a snarl. "Not only that, but you did not obey a direct order from me. You argued with me." He unsheathed his claws and placed them underneath his chin. "You don't understand what you really did wrong. This is no genuine apology."
He curled his claws upward until they just penetrated his flesh. "You don't have to worry about your kits winding up on the prison, begging for the right to see their siblings. I will personally save them before that ever happens." He paused. "I understand what growing up here is like as a kitten without parents. If you don't teach them to serve and love their Sovereign, then I will. I will make sure that they are grateful to live here." He sheathed them and let Snowbunny crumple to the ground. He turned to the warriors behind him. "Hold him still."
Crimsonrose watched as Agonywail arrived with a posse in tow. The ginger she cat sighed.
While the knight thought he was displaying his strength, it was a sign of weakness. He had to ask other cats to do his work. Which in this case was to establish his dominance over the prisoners.
Assistance with punishments were one thing, this was just bullying, and Crimsonrose was just disappointed.
As he ordered the cats to grab Snowbunny, Crimsonrose sat debating what to do. Her eyes flicked to the bark he'd placed beside him coated in pine sap.
A useful tool for holding things together in a pinch. Crimsonrose was familiar with using it occasionally, primarily for repairs.
But she could only suspect what Agonywail was expecting to fix with it. There were several options that came to mind.
Her gaze flicked to Howlingknight a cat she remembered who had assisted in throwing her in here when Wintrystar had given the order. Her blood quickened, claws itching to engage the cat in round two.
She rose to her paws and strode forward.
"I believe I owe you an apology Agonywail." She meowed as she sat down beside the dropped Snowbunny before any of the cats he'd brought could go after the former knight of the stars. "I am sorry. You are clearly quite sharp and creative, truly an admiral knight of the wise." She praised.
The words were honest and true but Crimsonrose did not grovel as she spoke.
"But you are wasted like this." Crimsonrose said, a sadness crossing her eyes. "You have come up with a creative punishment, but you weaken your position by having others hold prisoners for you. The question then is raised, can you not do it on your own? This is not a punishment for an incorrection, this is asserting dominance, and in that regard it's a failure. You've weakened your dominance by having others do it for you. A true mighty cat handles it himself, he proves the power he holds in his paws."
Agonywail turned to look at Crimsonrose as she approached. He hadn't forgotten her blatant disrespect from earlier in the day, and he couldn't help his lip from curling up. His eyes blazed as her word flowed, and to him her words tasted too much like honey. No doubt they were laced in poison. It was simple flattery. But he did not care for it. He came down here to do a job, to make sure the prisoners knew their place. And he intended to do just that.
He chuckled as she talked about him being a coward. It simply amused him beyond even Snowbunny groveling at his paws. "You see, Crimsonrose, you tried to incite a rebellion in here earlier. I am strong, but I am not stupid. Coming in here without back-up would certainly endanger me. While I would give my life for Wintrystar in battle in a heartbeat, I have no obligation to risk my life to punish you." He turned his attention back to Snowbunny and pushed his head to the ground, and with his other paws picked up a glob of sap and stuffed it into the tom's ear, and then quickly followed up with the other ear.
He looked up to see Bones making his escape. Pathetic. He dashed over and grabbed the scrawny tom's neck in his jaws, ignoring any weak attempts to fight back. He gave the tom a strong shake, and felt the flesh disconnect from his neck. He gave one final heave and tossed the tom's body into a pool of drinking water. His blood soon made it overflow, send red rivulets all over the prison and into other small pools.
Crimsonrose simply let out a sigh as she saw Bones perish at the paws of Agonywail.
She shook her head. "If turning up my nose to pointless bullying is rebellious, then you are ill equipped for a proper rebellion." She said.
"WinterClan is a strong and mighty clan, I have listened as Snowbunny detailed cats groveling and begging at the paws of the leadership just to get into WinterClan." Crimsonrose let out a snort.
"It's pathetic. All that will accomplish is giving you just another worthless yes, man, and stoke the egos of those up top."
"Before you had to be strong! Strong enough to claw your way into the clan. We didn't bully the weak, you either became strong or you were too weak and wasted away." Crimsonrose said simply. "Because when you go after the weak, you aren't pushing yourself further. You stagnate your own growth in favor of pushing others down."
"And stagnating, standing still and not going forward especially in the cold, means you'll always freeze." Crimsonrose said. "I'm simply warning you that you're very, very cold."
With that the ginger she cat flicked her tail, and went over to Bones' corpse.
She carefully picked him out of the water, and set him down next to it, inspecting the water. It had been tainted by the blood, but fresh water from the melting snow above would replenish it in time.
