It had been far too long since Baron had visited the pretty Springclan territory. The place was particularly bright and lively thanks to the changing of seasons. Patches of brightly colored wild flowers where scattered throughout the path, giving Baron a sense of peace, though his mind was far from peaceful. It wandered to a particular memory, an image of a pretty white and black she-cat with large pale green eyes and her exciting announcement, or at least exciting for her. Kits. He was a father to some Springclan kits somewhere. The idea left him unsettled, so much so he needed a small break from seeing the she-cat. That small break turned into many many moons until finally his mind was off of the sticky situation. It was on a whim that Baron thought back to the Springclan she-cat and he couldn't help but wonder what came of her. Curiosity peaked and he found himself traveling through Springclan and to a familiar forest path that led to a small dirt glove where the two would meet. It was strategic; the grove was in a small corner of the territory, far from the center of camp from what Mossbreeze had explained. Warriors rarely patrolled so far as the terrain was rather muddy and slick especially in seasons of snowfall or rain. It was the safest place the two could meet when they did.
Baron finally arrived to the old meeting spot, a crooked smile played across his black muzzle as he recalled the flirtation-ship. It was one of his most innocent and naive conquests and very honestly, his easiest. He remembered the she-cat fondly. Her passionate talks of a beautiful world and a bright future. She exuded childish hopes and dreams that were nice, but Baron was still realistic. The world was not as nice, as forgiving as the Warrior imagined, but it was nice to indulge in the naive outlooks from time to time. It was a much needed break from his rather rough and tiring lifestyle.
He sniffed at the dirt floor under him out of curiosity, searching for the familiar scent of the she-cat but, he found none. He scoffed to himself. Of course she probably forgot all about him. For a moment, a flash of kits ran across his mind but he shrugged it off immediately. Not his problem and thankfully it never would be.
Smokecloud had been out hunting early that day. Now that new-leaf was upon them, prey were beginning to return. He had managed to catch two squirrels and two mice. It was a great start to the day. However, he wanted to bring back something for the kits. Perhaps a bird that they can try and play with the feathers. He found himself near the more muddy part of the territory. He didnt know why because the sticky and slippery mud made it hard to hunt but something was drawing him toward that specific spot. A bad feeling in the pit of his stomach but the drawing could not be fought. That was when he caught whiff of an unfamiliar scent. His fur began to rise along his shoulders and spine but he forced it to lie flat. Rounding a tree, he finally caught sight of the unmistakable intruder. The smokey gray tom approached the intruder with confidence while also keeping a calm composure. He cleared his throat as he approached, "Is there something I can do for you?" His question was less of an offer and more of a question of why he was on their territory.
The sudden intrusion of a unfamiliar voice made the Black loner jump in surprise, turning quickly to face a dark grey cat. His jade green eyes narrowed at the collection of scars that adorned the stranger's face. Baron couldn't help but stare. The tom would have had a rather pretty face had it not been drowned in fleshy scars. What a shame.
"Oh sorry my good sir, I seem to have gotten a bit lost." Baron lied calmly, the habit so normal it didn't take much thought for the loner to find a good excuse. "I was just passing by, but I've never seen these parts. I got a bit curious and thought it would be fun to explore!" His charming smile was bright and nonthreatening in attempt to maintain the so far, peaceful meeting. "I'm sorry, are these your lands I've stumbled across?"
Though the black tom was rather calm and peaceful, Smokecloud couldnt help but feel something off about the tom. He was used to cats staring at his scars so that didnt bother him as much as the feeling he kept getting in the pit of his stomach. An unexplainable feeling he couldnt ignore. "Indeed it is. This is Springclan territory and I must ask you to leave or you shall be forcefully removed." Smokecloud's warning was calm but there was a warning tone within it. "If you dont know the way, I will gladly show you."
The sight of the Springclan warrior amused him. Diplomatic as always. The situation garnered a wave of deja vu and Baron couldn't help but think back of the pretty black and white she-cat. Their first encounter was practically identical, though she eventually eased up enough thanks to his good look and charms. He doubt he could get away with as much with this tom.
"You know, I would really appreciate that help buddy. I've been roaming around here for a while now trying to find the right way out." He lied calmly, his tail lashing slowly and calmly behind him in a show of surrender. The loner was confident in his ability to hold up well in a fight, but it didn't mean he wanted to start one. "Please, lead the way- uhh, I didn't get your name?" He inquired with false thoughtfulness.
(Ooooh! I know we haven't role-played out Mossbreeze mentioning the father's name, but maybe it could have slipped in a conversation and Moss rushed to override it, but Smoke noticed and remembered the name? That way he can put two and two together when Baron introduces himself right now?)
"Smokecloud." The loner echoed with intrigued. "That's a pretty name, I think it suits you." He spoke, his charisma and charm thick as he padded along side the tom though there was a deal of space between the two. Baron knew from experience that if he threaded lightly and respectfully, he often avoided confrontations with Clan cats. At this point, he had no further dealings with Springclan and would rather escape with no scars and wounds so he can move on with his day. "You warrior cat's have a funny way of naming each other no. At least from my understanding." Baron's true thoughts slipped out. The words could have easily been taken as teasing, but his curious tone made it clear he had no intention of making fun of it. "So since my name is Baron, I would have to take on a surname when I becoming a- gladiator or knight or whatever it is you call it right?" He spoke casually, his mind wandering off distractedly towards different ideas "So hypothetically, lets say I joined a clan and I get a promotion I would have to be like, Baronclaw- OR maybe something more suiting like Baroncharm!" The fun attempt at coming up with a name left the loner grinning. That had a nice ring to it.
(Oh!! Actually! She did mention his name in her story!)
"Warrior. You'd be a warrior." Smokecloud corrected the tom when he assumed they were knights, completely missing the name at first. However, as Baron continued to say his name with different endings, something tugged at his memory. Baron....Baron.... The name rang on, daring him to remember. Why did that name sound so familiar? Then, it dawned on him like the first light of day shining a warm milky spotlight on his fur. He stopped in his tracks and directly looked at the rogue, his brows furrowed. Everything came into place. His name was Baron...He was wonderful and charming...and exuded all the confidence I dreamed to be. His mates voice rang in his mind, repeating over and over like an echo. It all connected. This was the tom. Anger boiled inside him, yet, he didnt want to bring up Mossbreeze directly. Oh, no. This tom was lower than dirt. He deserved to be treated as such. Smokecloud decided to play with his prey, get a reaction from the rogue with subtle hints. This was going to be fun. Smokecloud realized he had been staring at the tom for a lot longer than he should. He cleared his throat and blinked away. "Yes, those names would suit you. So, Baron. Do you have a family of your own?"
"Oh yea, right a Warrior!" Baron lightly noted, not truly interested in the hierarchy of the clans. Unaware of the plotting next to him Baron went on, his walk casual and carefree knowing that at this point he was in the clear from any trouble with the Springclan warrior beside him. Smokecloud was a rather interesting character, he didn't mind the company for the moment, but he looked forward to leaving as soon as possible. Who knows where he would go, maybe back to the two-leg homes to visit a pretty little house cat.
The random and rather personal question let Baron feeling a bit confused, but he pushed through it, not allowing his confusion to show on his cheerfully nonchalant expression "Family? Me no." He scoffed looking ahead "My ma passed away when I was pretty young, dad was a bum, never knew who he was- probably for the best though." He shrugged honesty but straight to the point with his answers "Not one to settle down, though I've met a few pretty cats who have tempted me close enough to do just that." His mind wandered to a few cats, lingering for just moment on Mossbreeze before he shook his head "No no sir, its the bachelor's life for me!" He laughed, turning to look at the scarred tom "And you? You enjoy the bachelor's life too or you've got a pretty girl at home waiting for you?"
"Ah, indeed I do have a pretty she-cat back home. The best she-cat I had ever met. Her voice drips slow and smooth like a honey soaked bee comb. Her scent is of sweet flowers that wraps around you like a warm nest. Her fur is as white as snow with black spots and it's so soft, it feels like silk when you touch it. And I don't know if she knows it, but she has the cutest black spot behind her ear in the shape of a heart. And her eyes...well, they are unforgettable. Once you see them, they stay in your mind forever. They are greener than the forest at green-leaf and they sparkle like someone chose the brightest stars out of the sky and placed them flawlessly in their depths. And then theres her touch. So soft, warm, and welcoming. Its enough to make a tom's knees buckle. She can tame the most feral heart with a single touch of her tail. Oh! And the way she lights up when she talks about her dreams is truly breathtaking. Shes so smart and has such great ideas! She also has cute little quirks, like the way she scrunches up her nose and sticks out her tongue when she concentrates or how she stomps her paws when she gets angry. Shes...just so perfect. I cant believe someone like me had won the heart of a creature so beautiful. Anyone would be blessed to call her theirs. I'm just glad it was me." His eyes wondered to the tom, looking dreamy as he spoke about his mate. Though, he kept watch of the rogue for any signs of feeling uncomfortable or catching the slightest hint of regret. "Its too bad you've chosen the bachelor life. I always thought I would be alone until she came into my life and changed everything for the better. I guess you truly dont know how it feels to be happy until you are loved by a beautiful she-cat." A purr rumbled in his throat despite his wicked intentions.
"Oh, and not to mention her incredible kits. We didnt have them together but...well, I see them as mine. They are so strong and so brave. They are the perfect little kits and I'm so lucky that they get to call me their father even though we aren't blood. Their blood father walked out on them. He didnt even want to meet them and that's just too bad because they really are terrific kits and so incredibly smart. Whoever that tom must have been, really had everything. It's a shame he let it all go. In a way, I'm kind of glad he did because if he was a cat like that, that family didnt deserve him. And I would never have been so fortunate to call them my family." Smokecloud kept walking, speaking as if he had no idea that the rogue was really the same one that had left the family he had come to know and love.
Baron listened with intrigue, nodding his head in comradely agreement, seemingly hyping the scarred tom up on his catch as the details poured in. The black tom couldn't help but play along, putting an image in his head as the Springclan warrior continue to paint a picture of his girl back home. Baron's smile grew with excitement, but the image of Mossbreeze came to his mind. Funny how some of the details matched the sh-
"-she has the cutest black spot behind her ear in the shape of a heart-" Baron's cheerful expression froze as finally the pieces clicked. He maintained an expression of naive content, but inside his heart was racing. There could not be any way the two toms were thinking of the same cat, but as Smokecloud went on, he knew that his hopes were dashed. Slowly, his expression slowly melted to a more stern expression. There was something in the way that the Springclan warrior detailed Mossbreeze to him made him uneasy. On the surface, it would have been an endearing moment, to hear a cat talk so fondly of his mate, but there was something lurking in between the tom's words that made the loner suspicious.
As he began to elaborate more, he opened up about the kits. Baron slowed his pace, falling slightly behind the Springclan warrior, his jade green eyes sharpened as the warrior finished up. As his words, ended Baron found himself standing still, watching the grey cat carefully "What a shame." Baron spoke, his tone low and intense "Sounds like he is missing out."
"He is. He threw away something that was priceless and could have made him very happy like it makes me. Shes happy, too. She didnt really smile much before, I mean, not to be too cocky about it but she seems to smile more and brighter. I'm glad I could make her so happy and smile so much despite the heart ache she went through." Suddenly, Smokecloud realized the tom had stopped. Got him Smokecloud thought as he looked over his shoulder at the tom standing still. "Are you okay? Is something wrong?" The smoky tom still played it off as being completely oblivious despite knowing the truth and seeing that his words were festering within the rogue. He wanted to see if Baron would say something about Mossbreeze or if he could simply let it go and move on. Perhaps him knowing that Mossbreeze had moved on and was happy, he would stop visiting Springclan territory.
Baron stared on, taking in the warrior's nonchalant attitude as he spoke. On the surface, anyone would have interpreted the tom as oblivious and love-stricken the way he spoke about his mate, but Baron knew the ways of manipulation well. He practically invented it. There was something about this tom's manner that seemed off, it was reminiscent of a method of manipulation Baron was fluent it. His Jade eyes peered on for a moment longer, leaving the two toms in a few awkward moments of silence.
And as if nothing had happened, the charisma returned to the loner's expression, like a sudden ray that escaped through a cloud sky. "I'm surprised you've taken to her so well." He went on, continuing his steps, though they were now calculated and lighter. No one but Baron would be able to noted the difference in his walk. It was intentional, purposeful. "I mean with her track record and all..."
Smokecloud did not expect the tom to carry on so gleefully but, yet, here he was walking along with a spring in his step as if nothing had happened. However, Smokecloud caught something else. I mean, with her track record and all... The tom was playing back. Baron knew of Smokecloud's intentions. "Oh, her track record, hm? You speak as if you know her, traveler." Smokecloud's voice didnt change but there was a hidden acknowledgement of their past.
" I didn't say that." Baron shrugged off Smokecloud's accusation, but didn't exactly admit the truth. "She had kits with a stranger, I assume since you clan cats stick together." He pressed on with a smirk, his jade colored orbs watching Smokecloud carefully "No disrespect to your girl, but isn't that against the rules you life by?" The words were spoke out with a sense of innocent curiosity. "It seems like she had a thing for outsiders. Aren't you worried that maybe she might search outside her clan again for that... unique kind of attention, since she has already done it once." Baron surprised himself with the odd sense of defensive feelings that had suddenly filled him. Something in him almost felt jealous of the warrior, so much so he wanted to hurt him, plant some seeds of doubt more so now that the Loner caught onto his game.
Smokecloud felt his heart rate speed up. Would she really do something like that? "Nonesense" he mewed with confidence despite his fears rising. "She loves Springclan. Shes safe there and her kits are safe. Besides, I'm confident that our love is much stronger than any temptation. She may have made a mistake in the past but everyone deserves a second chance. Believe me, shes too smart to repeat her mistake." Althoigh he spoke with such confidence, there was an uncomfortable feeling in his stomach. If Baron begged her to come back, would she leave him for that lowlife? Would his smooth talking and charm win her back?
"I commend you then pal," Baron whistled, his tail whisking around carefree "To have the kind of confidence in your gal as you do even with those possibilities... I wouldn't even be able to sleep in peace at night without thinking about all the potentials." The words had a realistic sting to them. It was intentional. Baron wasn't going to let this cocky Springclan warrior leave him without some small taste of his own medicine. A small voice in his head reminded him that the excuse wasn't his only reason for the biting words. He was mad, more than he let on. It was a storm of a mixture of emotions that he had never felt in his life. The bachelor life suited the loner perfectly. He enjoyed the freedoms the lifestyle gave him especially with the ladies. Emotionally connecting with other cats was something that the loner avoided naturally. His list of flings was impressive but no one name on that list ever stood out enough for him to feel more that the heat of emotions that grew in those fun moments with she-cats. So it came as a shock when Baron found himself struggling to combat the powerful annoyance that brewed in him when the Springclan warrior spoke of Mossbreeze.
Smokecloud, too, was struggling with his own emotions. Though the two toms kept calm, any random cat that were to walk up would feel the electric tension between them. It was almost like a bomb that was just waiting to explode. The fuse getting shorter and shorter until one of the tom's burst. Though, who would it be? Smokecloud struggled to keep his cool, ignoring all temptation to swipe the smug look off of the intruder's face. "Well, when there is trust in a relationship, none of that matters. I can sleep beside her every night without the worry that she may be seeing someone else in secret or worry that she would leave me for someone else because we have trust and we believe that each of us love each other." He knew the words he spoke were true but after this encounter, he wasn't sure if he would ever be able to sleep so soundly again.
Baron listened on, his blood boiling with jealousy. How annoying. He thought to himself as he stared off into the distance, noting the distinct smell of Springclan growing stronger and stronger. The border was nearing them.
The black loner slowed his pace, frustration burning in as him as he sought to combat the warrior's snug confidence in his relationship. "Good for you to have that kind of trust." He cheered on, though the end of his words had a hint of a sneer. "If she is really the kind of she-cat you feel so confident in, I'm sure then you will have no problems then." Baron stopped in his tracks, watching the scarred tom with his piercing jade green eyes.
"Have you... ever considered the idea of that tom ever coming back to find her and the kits?" He suddenly added, the words far too cheerful than they should have been.
Smokecloud unsheathed his claws when Baron asked the question he had been waiting for. Although he expected the question to come up sooner or later, it still surprised him. "I'm sure that if I see him on this territory again, he will be leaving with more than just a warning." The statement was an odd one. It was almost implying that he knew Baron was the tom but without actually saying it. It was meant to make the rogue question whether Smokecloud truly knew or not.
