Mossbreeze sat by herself at the edge of camp, watching quietly as the sun was setting in the background. Night was falling soon and the remainder of the patrols were slowly returning back home from their work. The other queens began to carrel the kits back to the nursery for bedtime while apprentices wrapped up on their evening chores. As peaceful as the scene was, the queen sat with a troubled heart which showed in her distracted expression. There was something unsettling in the way she left things off with Smokecloud. Since finding out she was pregnant with kits, Mossbreeze fought to defend her kits from the criticisms and harshness of camp gossip. It was normal for the she-cat to dodge questions on their paternity or find ways to counter snide comments or inquiries. Most of the time, Mossbreeze was able to handle other clan mate's prying minds with grace, but there were times, she could feel her defenses rise and affect her attitude, words and perspective. Even in those situations, Mossbreeze never regretted it, but something about her short lived conversation with Smokecloud left her feeling guilty. She had not known the warrior personally, but in that short time she gained so much respect and trust in the warrior. She couldn't understand why, but there was an immediate connection with him that made her feel safe around him. It was a feeling she hadn't developed in a long time. Her pale green eyes flickered around camp, searching for the sight of a white, scarred tom. She needed to apologize to him. She needed to let him know that he didn't do anything wrong.
Coincidentally, Smokecloud entered the camp with a rabbit and a mouse dangling from his jaws. His eyes were still dull from the assumption he had been rejected once again. He deposited his catch and went to retire to the warrior's den, avoiding Mossbreeze's gaze, unbeknownst to him that she wanted to apologize. He figured he would just leave her be.
The sight of the grey tom brought a wave of relief to the queen as she arose to her four paws carefully. "Smokecloud!" She called out, picking up her pace to catch up the the warrior who moved rather quickly towards the warriors den. Her pretty green orbs blinked a couple times, flustered as she tried to find a way to start the conversation "Can we take a small walk and talk?" She finally mustered out, her concerned expression evident as she watched the tom's expression.
Smokecloud halted in his tracks and looked over his shoulder as the pregnant queen approached him. He perked his ears with curiosity. Wasnt she mad at him? His heart leaped when she asked him to walk with her. "Sure!" He added rather quickly, feeling his cheeks warm.
The seemingly interested response brought a smile across the queen's expression, relief evident in her eyes as she took in the warrior with a small but excited nod as she began to lead him away towards the entrance of camp. This would be the first time the queen left camp in a while, but the break was well deserved. With Beedust now relocated to the Queens den and the addition of a new, permanent queen, Mossbreeze found it easier to step aside from the kits.
As the two progressed, the silence grew. Mossbreeze felt her mind race as she fought to find the right words to say. "I just... really want to apologize to you... for the other day." She murmured, finally finding the courage to look off to Smokecloud who was walking at her side "You have been more than kind to me since we met and one of the few who have judged me and my unborn kits, despite the rumors I'm sure you've heard throughout camp." She paused, her brows furrowed tightly as she pressed on "I know I can be a bit defensive, but I want what is best for my kits. If that means taking the petty looks of disappointment or disapproval, I'll do it for them."
Smokecloud hesitated with his response. He hadn't expected an apology. He had assumed he was the reason for her getting upset so he should be the one apologizing, not her. "You dont need to apologize" Smokecloud mewed at last. "I accept it, of course, but I'm the one who should be apologizing and for that, I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I made you feel like you needed to be defensive and you have every right to defend your kits. It shouldn't be anyone's business but yours. It doesn't matter what the rumors are. Kits are a blessing to a clan and to a mother no matter the bloodline nor where they come from." Smokecloud wanted Mossbreeze to feel at ease with him. That he would never judge her or make her feel like she needed to be on the defense. "Springclan had to start somewhere, right? At one time, we all came from far away and from different bloodlines but what made us Springclan is when we all came together as one. I cant promise that your kits will be treated the same as the rest of the Springclan kits but I know that in time, they will prove that they are just as much Springclan as the rest of us."
Mossbreeze listened with quiet awe, her pale green gaze wise as she watched Smokecloud speak. She felt a strange feeling of numbing relief as she not only listened to the warrior's hopeful words, but also noting his genuine expression as he spoke. Though she knew she had friends within her clanmates, no one had ever vocalized their support of her like Smokecloud had just done. The powerful waves of emotions in the queen proved to her the power of supportive words can be.
Her pale green orbs grew glassy until finally, a tear fell. She sniffed back a short and breathy laugh which revealed her immense embarrassment "Th-thank y-you for those w-words-" She tried to speak, her words shaky with emotion as she once again pushed out another breathy laugh "Oh gosh! Only Starclan knows how insane these hormones are!" Her words were rushed and almost incomprehensible as she try to regain composure.
"Hey...its okay" he soothed as he helped wipe away one of her tears with his paw. While he was touching her cheek, his yellow eyes locked with her green eyes for a split moment before he withdrew with embarrassment. "O-oh, uh, sorry..." he stammered, giving a sheepish grin.
The small but loving act stunned the queen, her eyes widening as she took in the warrior's yellow gaze before he pulled away. Her heart lurched, almost ached as he pulled away. The internal reaction confused the queen for a moment but she over saw it, going instead to comfort the embarrassed warrior. "Please don't be." She meowed gently, blinking away the remainder of the tears. "I... appreciate the support... I've never... had anyone whose be so outwardly kind to me." The admission made her smile fall in the slightest as her mind wandered.
"Well, I just thought you needed a friend" he mewed, shrugging his shoulders with a smile. "Your a really kind she-cat who has been through a lot. You deserve to be treated with respect and decency."
Mossbreeze smiled thoughtfully in the Tom's direction, feeling her pelt grow hotter, so much it left her uncomfortable. "You know, I never took you for such a romantic, thoughtful kind of a tom." She admitted sheepishly "I rarely see you really interacting personally with anyone in camp. The only times I ever saw you in action was when you stepped in as a medicine cat."
"I wouldn't say I'm romantic" he chuckled in embarrassment, nervously pawing at the ground. "I'm usually not very outwardly thoughtful or interactive but...I dont know...I guess you just bring out the best in me." He shrugged and smiled once more.
Hearing his words made the queen's heart flutter. She couldn't stop the smile from growing slightly wider upon hearing the warrior speak. It was all sweet and genuine, but concern brought the she-cat back down from the clouds and her smile faded slowly as reality sat in. "What have you heard from others... about me?" The question was serious and her inquiry was gentle but stern. She wanted to know what he knew, or at least what he could have possibly thought of her position based on what rumors had spread throughout camp.
"Uh, well, I heard some cats say the father was from another clan, some say he is a rogue but I honestly don't care. Like I said, its not any of their business who the father is. What's important is that you are here and your kits are strong and healthy. That's it. That's what is important. I dont care what other cats say and neither should you" he responded, his expression turning from soft to serious. "You have to stop worrying about what the clan says, Mossbreeze. You are going to have beautiful kits and they are going to be strong and are going to be more than great assets to the clan. You should know how blessed you are."
The tom wasn't stern, nor harsh spoke, but the seriousness in his words took the she-cat by surprise, her eyes widening slightly. Then in that moment, all of the warriors words came crashing down on her. She had been so defensive and protective of her image, she hadn't realize how little time she spent in building her faith in herself and her future family without the whispers and rumors of other's affecting her. The realization left the she-cat in a quiet state of shock and awe. Smokecloud was right. She shouldn't be so concerned with what others thought. Her expression softened as she thought of the kits in her belly which squirmed in that moment. The feeling made her smile. They were blessings, blessing in disguise and the thoughts and opinions of others shouldn't get in the way of her happiness and excitement for them. "Has anyone every told you how wise you are?" Mossbreeze meowed quietly, a bright smile growing across her expression as she held onto the warrior's yellow gaze, her heart facing as they locked onto her own gaze.
His serious gaze melted into a smile and he gave a little flick of his tail. "Well, I was a medicine cat, you know" he mewed, a hint of amusement in his voice. "Now, what do you say we go get a refreshing drink from the waterfall?"
The idea of water made the queen's parched throat ache with passionate excitement. The sudden bodily reaction made the queen reflect on her previous day, realizing that she had yet to drink water since the incident with Smokecloud. "Definitely." She agreed, a sense of urgency expected in her tone as she quickened her pace, excitement for a refreshing drink of water. The two pressed on into the woods in silence until they reached the river. The queen made no hesitation as she stepped forward to the cold water. The water hit her in a powerful wave of content. Dear Starclan how did she let herself go without a drink of water for so long? The answer came quick to her. She worried far too much, so much so it blinded her to her own needs.
She stared up from the water to watch the scarred warrior, her pale green orbs blinking slowly as her mind began to reel. As much as she began to enjoy the tom's company, she realized she really did not know much of his history. The extent of her memories served her back to when he joined Springclan, aiding as Medicine Cat temporarily, but she had no knowledge to his life prior. Thinking on this idea, she couldn't help but take in his scars. It was odd, she never really truly took in the sight of the scars since their growing friendships until that moment. Curiosity peaked, but she wouldn't dare cross that line, fearful of how that would make the warrior feel.
"You know, I don't know very much about you, just surface knowledge of your life within the clan." She started as she finally stopped drinking, pulling her head up from the river, a few droplets of water falling from her soaked chin. "I realized I know nothing of your life prior to joining Springclan." She stated, her words speaking as a matter of factually, but a hint of a question lingered towards the end of her words. Mossbreeze wanted to ask the question outright, but lacked the courage to do it, opting instead to offer the tom the opportunity to speak whatever he was comfortable revealing.
Smokecloud was crouched, lapping up the cool, refreshing water. It quenched his thirst in the most comforting way. However, her question took him by surprise and made him nearly inhale his water, causing him to break out in a coughing fit. After he finally stopped coughing, he looked at her with watery eyes. He wasn't crying, his bout of coughing had made his eyes produce tears. He wiped them away and caught his breath. "Excuse me" he croaked out in a raspy voice from coughing. "I wasnt expecting your question." As he spoke, his voice got stronger once again. "Your curious about my scars, arent you?" He looked expectantly at Mossbreeze with his intense yellow eyes.
The warrior's powerful reactions shocked the queen, and guilt made a comfortable nest within her mind. His assumption quickly made the queen go hot, realizing how foolish it was of her to be so vague. It mortified her to know that Smokecloud thought that she was pointing out his scars, a trait that the tom was obviously self conscious about. "No, no honest to Starclan, that was not my intent." She spoke up quickly, her wide eyes pleading for him to believe her honest words. "Wh-what I meant was just that- you had a life before Springclan, one I don't know about." She corrected, her voice growing powerful and loud with honesty "I just- I just feel like you are just so true and kind and compassionate and I love that about you and who you stand for as a cat is something I admire so deeply-but I realize I don't know much about you- What kind of cat admires someone without truly getting to know who they are and where they come from and-" The words came out fast and in an avalanche of mixed emotions. She was stressed at the idea that the warrior misunderstood her intentions and she wanted to make it clear to him her truest feelings, but in the midst of trying to remedy her mistake, she had quickly admitted her feelings for the tom, unaware of it until later in her rambling where she stopped suddenly, realizing too late what she had said.
Mossbreeze stood speechless in front of the gray tom, her pale green eyes impossibly wider from bone chilling embarrassment. How could she be so ridiculous to have said all that to the tom's face without thinking. Her pelt grew hotter and hotter with every second of silence "-and, I am just being too abrasive with my curiosity and I am scared I've made you feel uncomfortable. Please Smokecloud, disregard everything I've said if I've made you uncomfortable, that was not my intention." She pleaded, her gaze thoughtfully taking in the warrior's expression for any sign of distress or annoyance.
A purr erupted from his throat and his whiskers twitched in amusement. "Whoa whoa, slow down!" He mewed, laughter ringing in his voice. "I'm not angry!" Though, now he felt warm under his fur after Mossbreeze's compliments but he decided to take it lightly. He didn't want to assume that she had feelings for him and then he would make things awkward. "I just dont usually do back stories but because it's you, I suppose a friend deserves to know more about the cat they are hanging out with, huh?" He chuckled. "Well, if you must know. Where I came from, I was born as a barn cat. I lived in this big dusty barn with piles of dried grass and more mice than you can count! It was literally paradise..." his mind drifted back to the memories he had buried so deep, he almost forgot they were there.
"My mother...oh you would have loved her. She had beautiful blue-gray fur and the prettiest green eyes. Her voice was like an angel's. Smooth and sweet like honey straight from the bee hive. And she always smelled like flowers. I guess that's why her name was Daisy." He purred, his whiskers twitching as he remembered his beautiful mother. "I had four other siblings. Two sisters and two brothers. They were great, too. We had so many fun adventures together! There was one time we even made the farmer so angry because we jumped on his cow while he was collecting the milk and the cow knocked over the bucket. Let's just say, we didn't get the extra milk he usually gave us after the milking. And there was another time we jumped on the monster that the farmer used that would eat the grass and we rode on it all around the farm. Those were good times..." then his smile faded, a grim look in his eyes.
"One night, I was maybe the age of an apprentice, there was a terrible storm. Probably the worst I have ever seen. The farmer usually blew out the lantern hanging on the barn but he had forgotten that night. The wind blew so hard, it made the barn creek. I remember being curled up with my mother and her telling us it would all be okay. Little did I know, that night would change my life forever. The wind rocked the lantern until it fell off the hook and landed with a loud crash onto the barn floor. Flames exploded from the lantern and the entire barn was on fire in a matter of minutes. My mother was rushing us out of the barn..." his voice began to break. "I was ahead of them...I could see the exit...that's when I heard my mother scream. I halted and turned around. Her paw had gone through the floor and was stuck. Despite my mother yelling at my brother and sisters to get out, they remained to help her. I rushed over to help as well and that was when the beam fell...it sprayed up hot ashes in my face and scarred me forever..." he looked away from Mossbreeze. "The last thing I saw was my mother and my siblings through the flames but I couldnt get to them. Eventually, the flames grew toward me and pushed me out of the barn...I stood atop the hill and watched the barn burn down...after the two-legs with big, loud red monsters put the fire out, I came back to search for my family but I never found them...they were gone...forever" he wiped away a tear and chuckled softly, embarrassed for his story being such a downer.
"Anyway, I couldn't live there anymore so I traveled around. Got into some mischief, got in with the wrong crowd of cats at one point, and then I just found myself on my own. That was when I found Eternalstar. She had cut her paw. I grew up out in the world for so long, I picked up a few tricks so I cleaned and treated her wound. In return, she offered me a place to stay in Springclan and asked if I would be their medicine cat while Fawnheart was away. Of course I agreed though I didn't know her true intentions until it was too late. I hadn't known that she was actually exiling Fawnheart from Springclan but once Eternalstar was killed and Fawnheart returned, I only found it fair for her to reclaim her position in the clan so I resigned and became a warrior. Now, I'm here telling you my story." He chuckled. "That's all. It's kind of a downer story so I dont share it much but that's me." He shrugged his shoulders.
