Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. Still over-awed by the beauty of the world around him, Doestar was only half-listening to Shadedstar’s joke and offered a frail breath of laughter in response. He limped over slowly to join his friend at the edge of the pool, ears half-flattened against his head, spine arched down to make himself smaller, and steps tentative and wary, like he felt unworthy of being in such a perfect place. It was so beautiful, so blameless and faultless and good, and he wasn’t. He was tainted, and he felt like he was making the meadow less pure just by being in it. But he’d never been very good at resisting temptation, and so he stayed where he was.
He caught Shadedstar staring and smiled back at him softly, stepping up beside him and gazing down into the calm, rippling water. Cherry blossom petals floated around them like gentle rain, landing delicately on the mirror-black water, and spray from the waterfall turned it all to a sparkling, misty Eden. “Worth it,” he echoed in a soft whisper, looking up and following Shadedstar’s gaze to the waterfall. He settled down on his belly and dipped both forepaws into the water, swaying them beneath the surface and enjoying the cool wetness and the feeling of the ripples lapping at his fur.
A warm, fresh breeze washed over him and ruffled his fur. “Do you ever wanna just… hide away from it all? From being leader, from your Clan, from knowing they all depend on you and need you and…” He shook his head with a small, rueful smile and let out a soft sigh. “Probably not. You love your Clan so much, and I—I love my Clan too, so much, but… it scares me sometimes, a little.” He laughed, quiet and broken. “A lot. What would happen to them if I did something wrong, like I usually do. It’s… I’m sorry, it’s stupid and I’m being a downer.” He smiled up at Shadedstar with sad eyes before lowering his gaze back down to his paws in the water, moving them numbly beneath the dark, glistening surface.
Laying down beside Doestar, he pressed his pelt into the SummerClan leader’s. “It’s true, I love my Clan to the moon and back, but it gets really overwhelming sometimes.” He began. He usually didn’t like sharing his thoughts or feelings with anyone, but something with Doestar made him more. . . Confident? Yeah, confident. “I remember back when I was confident, not a care in the world. I miss old me, he wasn’t plagued with constant doubt and anxiety and pressure.” He finished his ramble with a, “But younger me didn’t know you, so I guess I don’t want to go back.” He shook his head to clear his thoughts.
He smiled to himself as Shadedstar spoke, eyes still sad and lost but his heart losing a little of its heaviness and feeling a bit more like the flower-speckled cloud it usually was. But younger me didn’t know you, so I guess I don’t want to go back. He smiled and lifted his head to meet the other tom’s gaze; from anyone else, it would sound like flirtation, but they were just friends and he knew Shadedstar didn’t mean anything by it. “I like current you plenty,” he agreed softly, eyes gentle and hooded. “Wouldn’t change a thing.”
At the mention of their son, Doestar let out a purr and lifted his paws out of the water, rolling onto his side and blinking happily at Shadedstar. “He’s perfect,” he replied, cheek resting on the soft grass. A firefly flitted between them and he followed it for a moment with his eyes, purring. “He loves flowers, just like you and I — always wears one tucked in front of his little ear. And he’s so clever, and sweet and just— wonderful. I worry sometimes that he might miss his siblings but he seems happy enough and I’m utterly smitten with him.” He smiled, eyes dreamy as he thought of the kit back home. “I’m always worried, though. Always, constantly.” He laughed softly and rolled back up onto his stomach, leaning to the other side and resting his cheek against Shadedstar’s shoulder. “How’s Foxkit?” he asked, soft and sleepy.
“Oh I can’t wait until Batkit visits SpringClan! I can take him to the flower meadows and the cherry blossoms and everything!” He gushed, his moon changing in a snap. “Foxkit is a little charmer, and he’s adorable! I wonder how Applekit and Lilykit are doing.” He stared off at the sky. They would be sleeping by now, wouldn’t they? Sweetly dreaming in a cozy nest, in a cozy den, in a cozy camp. “Hey, do you want to explore the rest of the territory, we have all night long.” He smiled again, his cheeks and ears heating up a bit.
Doestar purred at the thought; any lingering fear that this hadn’t been the best way to raise their children was put to rest by the certainty that, whatever happened, they would grow up loved and surrounded by beauty and adventure. “He’ll love that,” he replied softly from where he still lay against Shadedstar’s side, his head turned away from him to watch the pink petals on the black water. He smiled drowsily at the mention of Foxkit, excited to see all of it for himself when it was his turn to have him in SummerClan.
His eyes had just started to drift shut, lulled into a peaceful sleepiness by Shadedstar’s breathing and heartbeat and warmth and the rhythmic rush of the waterfall, when his friend spoke again. “Sure,” he answered sleepily, voice muffled for a moment by a huge yawn. He always seemed to fall instantly asleep whenever he was cuddled up beside his friend; he supposed he felt safe with him there. “Might have to carry me, though,” he teased softly, rolling over to smile up at him groggily and bat gently at his muzzle with his good forepaw. “Where to next, my love?”
Noticing how tired Doestar was made Shadedstar feel just as sleepy. “I was going to show you the Japanese Garden’s, but that can wait—“ he let out a wide yawn, his ears tearing up because of it, “—until morning. Purring, he flopped back down from where he was half-sitting up and rested his head on the ground in front of him. “It’s too far for a lazy guy like me st this time of night anyway.” He smiled, closing his eyes. “Unless you. . . Really wanna go...” he trailed off slowly and sleepily.
At the mention of the Japanese Gardens, Doestar’s eyes snapped back open. “Wait, no, that sounds so pretty!” he chirped, shaking the sleepiness out of his body and tugging softly at Shadedstar’s ear with his teeth. “I wanna go,” he insisted sweetly, voice muffled. He let go and bowed his head to rub under his friend’s chin with a rough, drowsy purr, back trailing against his throat. “C’mon, c’mon, c’mon – up and at ‘em, sleepy head, I’m the guest and you have to do what I want.” His eyes sparkled as he turned and smiled down at the other leader, kneading excitedly at the soft, damp earth.
A terrible trait of his was his sense of spoiled entitlement - despite all his insecurities, despite his belief that he was worth nothing and deserving of even less, despite the sick little thrill that he got at that very thought, he was still used to being able to use his pretty face and his charm to get what he wanted. More often than not, it backfired horribly in his face and left him with a new bruise to heal, but he never learned. Most of the time, he didn't even realise he was manipulating a situation in his favour, didn't even realise he was flirting or taking advantage of natural weaknesses to make somebody do what he wanted them to - he was all sweetness and sunshine and soft, bunny rabbit smiles, how could he possibly be that little bit cruel?
Shadedstar smiled, getting to his paws and shaking out his thick pelt. “You sound like a kit right now.” He teased, stretching. “Alright. Alright, yes it is. It’s a sacred spot, though.” He bounded off ahead, through the flower fields, collecting pollen on his way through the meadow. It really wasn’t that far at all, he was being a bit overdramatic. “Common, we pass through the Cherry blossoms on our way there.” Walking on ahead, Shadedstar was content with the comfortable silence that developed between the two. Usually he hated silence, but with Doestar it felt, natural? Not awkward?
Soon enough, the flowers thinner out and the grass shortened significantly, giving way to tiny hills lined with cherry blossoms galore. Through the fields was an old stone twoleg path, comfortable underpaw. “There’s lots of rabbits here. These hills make great burrows.” He nodded over to a pretty obvious rabbit den nested near the bottom of one of the little hills. “It’s just past here.” He purred.
Naturally far less reverent than his friend, Doestar mouthed the word sacred to himself and pulled a derisive face before trot-limping after him with the smile back on his face, pleased to have gotten what he wanted. “We don’t have to pray, do we?” he asked dryly, half to himself. He hummed quietly to himself as silence fell, looking around happily.
There’s lots of rabbits here. “Oh, is that what that smell is?” he purred teasingly, watching a rabbit poke its nose nervously above ground before ducking back below. “I was wondering but I was too embarrassed to a— of course it’s rabbits, ya big softy.” He let out a bubbly laugh and grinned up at Shadedstar, bumping against his shoulder with a soft purr.
It’s just past here. “No rush,” he whispered, voice dropping mock-seductively as he looked up at him with heavy eyes and a sly half-smile. “We have all night, remember?” In an instant, the cheerful grin was back on his face and he let out a sweet laugh, smiling up at Shadedstar happily before looking around with a little humming purr. “It’s gonna be so pretty,” he sang quietly, looking around and flicking his tail-tip at the same rabbit in greeting; he grinned lop-sidedly when it hid again in terror.
We don’t have to pray, do we? Shadedstar let out a somewhat nervous laugh followed by a, “No, of course not!” Though he did, every time he visited the garden, like to send a quick thanks to StarClan. Admiring the plentiful cherry blossoms that spread out across the land, he slowed his walking. Why you in such a hurry, Shadedstar? He’s right, we have all-l-l-l night. Squinting his eyes up ahead to try and see if they were close, the blobs of colour soon began to form actual shapes. “Ooooh!! There it is!” He ran a bit ahead of Doestar and into the bushes that covered the entrance to the garden. Ahead, a beautiful sight lay before him. Surrounded by cherry blossoms, flowers sprouting from the grass. There was a small pool in which they used for communicating with StarClan. It shimmered with the night sky, reflecting it beautifully.
Doestar limped after Shadedstar, admiring he cherry blossoms around him with a slightly open mouth. At his friend’s excited exclamation, he hurried after him through the bushes and let out a soft gasp at the beauty of the garden before them. “I’m moving to SpringClan,” he whispered, the joke lost a little around the breathy adoration in his voice. He glanced over at Shadedstar and gave him a big, toothy grin, happy beyond words and feeling more like himself than he had in moons, before limp-skipping over to the little pool and peering over the edge, claws unsheathing in his excitement and scraping faintly through the earth.
He smiled down at his reflection, tilting his head this way and that, before raising his head to the night sky and letting out a quiet purr. “This is perfect,” he murmured, lowering himself onto his side and rolling onto his back like a happy kit, gazing up at the stars and all the endless worlds beyond their dark sky with a soft smile. “You’re perfect. Everything is perfect.”
He smiled at Doestar's child-like amazement and let out a playful laugh. "Do it!" He challenged teasingly. "We can switch, I've never gotten to see SummerClan before." He stared into the pond wistfully, sending the usual thanks to StarClan for letting him spend this amazing night with the most amazing cat. He wondered if they disapproved of this friendship-bordering maybe romance with another Clan's leader, but frankly he didn't care. He was enjoying it. Loving it, and he wouldn't change one singular thing. Unless it was Chimerastar not being in the pictu--Nope, not going there.
This is perfect. You're perfect. His face heating up a bit, Shadedstar purred. "Oh, darling, I know. Let's check out the Valley next! There's so much I want to show you."
"You?" Doestar teased back weakly, voice still quiet and distracted by the stars from where he lay on his back with the constellations reflected in his eyes. He let out a soft laugh. "In SummerClan? You wouldn't last a week. Much too fluffy, and we don't have nearly enough trees to keep you out of the sun." He smiled over at his friend, letting out a drowsy purr when he calling him darling. He was very used to calling any passing cat an affectionate nickname; he was considerably less used to being called them himself. The closest Chim had gotten to a nickname for him was deputy, but he couldn't complain; it was typical Chimerastar, and he loved it just as much as he loved him.
Doestar laughed at Shadedstar's kit-like eagerness, rolling over and flicking a few droplets of water at his friend. It was probably holy water or something, but what was StarClan gonna do? Break his leg? Ha. "You're so cute," he purred. "The Valley it is, then - but I don't know if I can handle much more after that, much as I want to. My leg is... sore." He murmured the last word self-consciously, instinctively covering his fractured paw with his other forepaw to hide it from sight; he didn't like to admit he had limitations, didn't like to think much at all about his injury. In his eyes, it made him ugly. Lesser-than. He smiled thinly and dropped his gaze to the reflection of the stars in the water. Right now, much as he tried to ignore it, his whole leg felt like it was on fire. "Sorry," he whispered.
Apparently he was disregarding almost everything tonight, because he dipped his paw into the lifeless pool and flicked some back at Doestar. “If I slept during the day and was active at night, then yes, I very well could.” He smiled at Doestar, it fell softly once the other voiced his pain. “No, Freckles, we can visit it tomorrow. You need to rest your leg, you don’t want it to worsen, do you?” He yawned widely and touched his muzzle to the top of Doestar’s head. “We can sleep in the den, it’s just over there.” He murmured softly. “Plus, I’m tired.” Shadedstar glanced at the stars once more and made his way out of the garden, motioning his tail for Doestar to follow him to the Den.
You don't want it to worsen, do you? "Can't get much worse," he muttered bitterly; a heartbeat later, he glanced up at Shadedstar and offered him a soft, grateful smile to make up for his negativity. It was hard, though, sometimes; all he'd ever wanted, all he'd ever trained for and dreamed of, and it had been shattered in the blink of an eye all those moons ago. There were times he thought all he'd been doing in the moons since the break was try and peace his life back together, try to give it some semblance of meaning when he couldn't ever truly be the cat he wanted to be. When Shadedstar touched his nose to his head, he caught his eye with a gentle purr and forced himself to his paws. He was shakier than usual, exhausted by all the activity, and his twisted paw felt hot and inflamed, pinpricks of pain shooting up into his shoulder with every slight movement. Sucking in a sharp, shallow breath, he limped more delicately than usual after Shadedstar, wincing every time he stumbled or had to stop to rest on such a short walk; it just made him hate himself even more. Frustrated tears welled in his eyes at his own helplessness.
"I'm sorry," he called softly, voice tight with pain and anger. "Just... gimme a second." He stopped and sat down heavily just beyond the last of the cherry blossoms, shoulders hunched miserably and paw shaking uncontrollably. "I'm sorry," Doestar repeated again, just on the edge of a sob; he shook his paw violently but that only made the pain a hundred times worse; he tucked it against his chest and closed his eyes, waiting for the pain to subside just a little and trying to control his short, sharp breaths. He didn't want to look at Shadedstar, didn't want to see the inevitable pity and awkwardness.
Walking slowly beside him, Shadedstar rested his tail on the tom’s back in a friendly, comforting way. “It’s okay, you have nothing to be sorry for.” He said softly, lowering himself to the ground. “We can sleep here, no need to go to the den anyway. It’s a clear, amazing night.” His tail still touching Doestar’s back, his eyes shone with a hidden pity. He hated seeing his Freckles like this, it tore his heart open, but the best he could do was comfort him and hope for the best.
“You need to rest it, I should be sorry for trying to make you work it more.”
“No,” he replied softly, wincing and letting out a high little cry as he lowered himself onto his side and laid his leg out flat. He exhaled a quiet sigh. “No, don’t apologise for anything — tonight was perfect, I’m sor—“ He caught himself and smiled ruefully. “I’m regretful that I ruined it.”
Doestar raised his eyes to the clear night sky and all the thousands of stars and let out a little breath. “I’m glad I came to see you tonight,” he murmured, shifting closer to Shadedstar and resting his cheek on the soft grass.
“Tonight was perfect because of you.” Shadedstar murmured, resting his head on his paws. “I could do this a thousands yikes without you and it wouldn’t be the same. And yes, I’m trying to be cheesy.” He added quickly. But smoothly. He looked up at Doestar, lost in the details of his face, from his beautiful eyes to his adorable pink nose.
“Freckles—Doestar,” he began, letting out a yawn, “I love you.”
Doestar was about to shoot back some sleepy, mock-flirtatious quip when Shadedstar’s last words sunk in. He lay there for a moment, staring blankly at the grass between them and trying to make sense of what he’d said. Slowly, he sat up a little and raised his head, forcing himself to meet the other tom’s gaze; his heart pounded painfully in his chest and his throat felt a little too tight.
“You love me?” he echoed, forcing a half-grin that shook a little around the edges and didn’t quite meet his startled, wary eyes. Suddenly, the pain in his paw was forgotten, chased away by the uncomfortable prickling under his fur. “Like... like a friend?”
He paused for a moment, unsure of what to say. Maybe Doestar was just shocked, is all, which was exactly the case. Gaining a bit of confidence, Shadedstar took a deep breath and repeated it one more time. “I love you, moremore than a friend.” He said the last part quietly, anxiety prickling at his pelt. He could feel he had just made a grave mistake.
