Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. He missed Shadedstar. And he was so used to missing cats and not being able to visit them that, for quite a while, he'd simply accepted the ache in his chest and resigned himself to not seeing his friend again - until he realised, just before dusk, that Shadedstar was just one territory away, and there was quite literally nothing stopping him from popping in for a visit. It would take a while to remember what it felt like to be safe, and what it felt like to be free and happy and in control of his own life, but he would get there eventually, and one day maybe the chance to see his friends and the cats he loved would start to feel a little less like a novelty. And so, with a light heart and a happy smile, Doestar set off for SpringClan, trot-limping cheerfully through the wildflower meadow and skirting along the beach around the lake. The world felt so beautiful and endless and free, and he was in love with it all. He could be anything, and go anywhere, and his heart felt as weightless as a bird.
"Beware all SpringClan fiends," he called as he reached the edge of the territory, settling down just inside the border with a contented purr. "I am here to conquer your kingdom and romance your king."
Ah yes, a beautiful evening for a calming day walk in the territory, the perfect evening to forget his worries and anxiety and just wind down. Plus, it helped him sleep better at night. Breathing in a deep breath, the fresh, crisp air of dusk travelling to his lungs, he exhaled slowly and carefully. Not expecting anything much to happen, he got to his usual go-over-the-day-pondering. As of late, it had been a bit harder to spot his prey. Farther away his vision wasn’t as clear, and if he looked far enough it meshed into a colourful blob. He hadn’t had that problem before, but he didn’t want to pay any mind to it. He had other senses that could make up for the slightly impaired vision, it wasn’t such a big deal.
Then he stopped. Shadedstar twitched his ears, the sound of a voice cutting into earshot. He recognized that voice, he could from a mile away. Racing the rest of the way to the SummerClan border, Shadedstar slowed to a slight trot and, finally, a stop.
“Well, what a surprise.” He gave Doestar a wide grin, settling just behind their shared border. “Well, I guess we can’t fight your army.” He gestured to the emptiness behind the SummerClan leader. “Freckles, What brings you here? Other than ‘conquering my kingdom and romancing our king.” He purred, gesturing with his tail for Doestar to follow him into his territory. “If you’re here for a chat, let’s take this to camp, yeah? I could use with some prey.”
He let out a delighted purr as Shadedstar appeared, smiling at him softly and stepping forward to touch noses with his friend. His smile grew into a grin at his jokes and he let out a gentle huff of laughter, immediately falling into step beside the other leader at his gesture and limping beside him deeper into the territory. "Aren't I allowed to miss my cutest friend and the father of my children?" he purred, smiling lopsidedly at Shadedstar and stepping closer to gently nudge the larger tom with his shoulder. He didn't move away, leaving their pelts brushing together; he enjoyed the warmth and easy intimacy of the closeness.
He glanced around as they walked, breathing in the scents that were familiar only from Shadedstar's fur and the smells that drifted on the breeze into his own territory. "D'you know, it's weird, but I've never actually been into SpringClan. It's nice. D'you think... d'you think maybe we could go somewhere else than camp? Much as I'd love to see Foxkit, I'm feeling a bit restless and I don't really wanna be hemmed in, y'know? You could show me all the flowers you're always going on about," he suggested with a soft purr, nosing at the sweet-smelling necklace around Shadedstar's neck. "And you can be the best husband in the world and catch prey for us both when we get there." He grinned with as much sweet, persuasive charm as he could manage; he really didn't feel like hunting, and he wouldn't mind being taken care of for a little while. Quite bold of him, to prance onto another Clan's territory and demand a meal, but he thought he was surely cute enough for it to work.
“Oh but of course, my king.” He did a fake bow to Doestar and lead him along. “I have a place I know you’ll like.” Good thing it was close by. He enjoyed the silence for a bit, enjoyed the feeling of Doestar pressed against his side. He pushed through some lovely trees and, anticipation prickling at his paws—even though he knew where he was going and what they were about to see—he led Doestar into a large, colourful, beautiful flower meadow. One of two big ones in SpringClan territory, the closest to the SummerClan border. “Do you like it? If you don’t like it now, you will when night comes.” He purred, pushing off the ground with his hind legs and landing heavily in the tall grass and sweet-smelling flowers. He rolled in them, pollen sticking to his fur so that when he sat up, most of his back was bright yellow. He laughed joyously.
“Careful, lots of bees. Though, I’m sure SummerClan has lots of them too.” Shaking the pollen off his pelt, he sneezed, and sat down just before Doestar. “There’s lots of rabbits nearby, but I’m too lazy to catch them. I’ll fetch us some simpler prey.” And he was gone, returning many minutes later with two mice swinging from his jaws. “If this isn’t fit for a king, I surely would get more.”
Oh but of course, my king. Doestar let out a purr, eyeing Shadedstar with a soft, playful smile and offering a dainty paw for the other leader to kiss. As they walked on, he opened his mouth to make some quip about where exactly he was leading his poor, innocent self to - when he pushed through the undergrowth and the breath caught in his throat. They had their own wildflower meadow in SummerClan, but this was different, and beautiful, and there were trees, and he was completely in love with it. "You've been holding out on me," he growled, voice a little squeaky with the breathless adrenaline of pretty things, and roughly shoved the other leader - well, rough for him, probably quite gentle for the larger tom. He padded along more slowly as Shadedstar rolled around in the flowers, looking around and drinking it all in before stopping to stand over his friend with a crooked smile and an amused purr, head tilted as he watched him.
"God, yes," he groaned, flopping down in the tall grass and rolling onto his back, forepaws pawing at the first of the stars twinkling into the sky above them. "So many bees. We never had any in NightClan when I was growing up. Nasty surprise, but they're kinda cute, and sometimes they're fluffy." He stayed where he was, purring and kneading at the darkening sky past the long blades of grass around him, when Shadedstar disappeared to hunt. When he reappeared, he rolled his head over to look at the mice before flopping onto his side. "They'll do," he purred softly, clambering to his paws and limping a few steps before collapsing down atop Shadedstar, chin resting on the top of his ears and entire body perched atop his larger, fluffier one. He looked down over the bridge of Shadedstar's nose and smiled at him thinly. "Thank you kindly, m'lord." He didn't reach for the mouse, however; he wasn't really all that hungry, and he was far happier just lounging on his friend; he was warm, and soft, and his fluff was like a blanket. He raised his eyes to the stars, purring against Shadedstar's pollen-specked back. "I hope there are fireflies," he murmured softly.
“Well, you’ve never stopped by for a real visit, so I’d say you’ve been holding out on yourself.” He purred, smiling softly up at the sky. Feeling the need to gloat a little, playfully of course, he nudged the other leader. “This is our smaller meadow. You should see our other one, it’s got a waterfall and everything. Maybe I’ll show you later tonight.” He gave Doestar one last side-eye and dug into his mouse, finishing it in a few gulps. He twitched his whiskers in amusement and have a great, exaggerated huff. “Oh rats! You ruined the surprise! Yes, we have lots of fireflies.” He directed with his tail to the distance where a few soft, yellow lights glowed. “So many.” The chirp of crickets began, a slow song welcoming the night. He looked at the sky, relishing in the darkness of it. It was good enough. Prodding Doestar beside him, he got to his paws and immediately raced away.
”Common Freckles! The fireflies are waiting for us.” He called, jumping into the y’all grass whenever he could to watch the fireflies flutter around him, their soft glow illuminating his face.
Doestar rolled onto his side, landing with a soft thud and a little grunt. He kneaded at Shadedstar's side with soft, sheathed paws, purring uncontrollably as he listened to his friend and imagined how beautiful the other meadow must be. He gazed dreamily into the growing darkness, shivering a little as he let out a quiet little gasp. "Now you're just teasing," he whispered, shoving playfully at the other leader with all four paws and pushing as hard as he could, like a kit; it was useless, though - Shadedstar was so much bigger and all he did was push himself further away into the tall, sweet-smelling grass. Oh, rats! You ruined the surprise. Doestar's ears pricked up and he inhaled a shallow, excited breath, mouth open around a delighted grin. "Yesss!" he hissed excitedly, rolling back onto his belly and clawing at the earth as he watched the fireflies, happy as a kit seeing the world for the first time; he could feel their glow reflecting in his eyes like little fairy lights.
When Shadedstar got to his paws, Doestar let out a soft, bubbly laugh and scrambled up after him; he limped after him for a moment before stopping to watch the gentle glow of the fireflies washing over his friend's face. He smiled, admiring the soft-focus beauty of it all. It was perfect. For the first time in so long, his heart felt as calm as it was happy. "Coming!" he purred finally, trot-limping after his friend and watching the fireflies flit and spark around him, till he was completely surrounded and he felt like he was in an underwater dream, swimming in a sea of gentle golden light. He stopped and turned round and round, drinking it all in with an enchanted smile on his face; finally, when he was too dizzy to spin anymore, he collapsed back into the grass with a soft, gasping purr and watched the night light up around him anew as the little bugs fluttered out of the grass and into the air above him. "This is so magical," he whispered, reaching out one forepaw and drifting it through the air.
“SpringClan is a magical place.” He purred, sitting on his hind paws and lifting his front ones up to the fireflies, up to the sky. “Y’know what else this meadow is good for?” He stood straight once more, giving Doestar a playful, mischievous look. “Hiding.” And he was of, down the small slopes that formed little hills and into the deepest grass of the entire field. It was so tall Shadedstar of all cats could hide in it—and he was huge. “Come catch me, Freckles!” He called, hoping the SummerClan leader caught it. He snuck away, thankful for his black pelt that blended into the night. He let out a small giggle and, feeling more youthful and alive than he had been in a long time, crouched low and waited for Doestar.
Doestar tipped his head backwards against the grass and watched Shadedstar upside down, purring all the while. And then he was gone. Come catch me, Freckles! He let out a playful, mock-exasperated growl and dragged himself to his paws, scanning the meadow and trying to catch a glimpse of the other tom's eyes through the swirling haze of fireflies. If he did see anything, the amber blended in with the golden light. "I'm gonna tackle you so hard when I find you," he called with a lop-sided grin, opening his mouth to taste the air; but everything smelled like SpringClan, and he wasn't used to it enough to be able to differentiate Shadedstar's scent from the general scent of his territory. "Tackle and tickle, and I'm not gonna show a single scrap of mercy even if you beg." He glanced around slowly, blinking against the disorientating light of the fireflies against all the darkness, and, with another little growl that rumbled deep in his throat, dropped into a crouch and slipped into the long grass. Being so big might have its advantages for Shadedstar, but being small certainly had its perks at times like these.
He crept silently through the darkness, stepping softly and keeping his belly fur raised above the earth, like he was hunting; the grass hardly moved around him, disturbed more by the soft breeze than by his movement. And there, at the edge of the clearing... With a victorious hiss, he leaped into the shadows - and collided with a tree stump. He fell backwards, shaking his head, and let out a breathy, bewildered laugh. "You villain!" he called, purring to himself as he rubbed his forehead with his good paw. "Thou hast transformed thyself into a log - your most dastardly plan yet."
Opening his mouth to respond with a smart retort, Shadedstar caught himself mid-breath. Like you could hold me down for that long. He crept around, trying not to move the grass and flowers along with him, he stopped just in front of Doestar. He stopped for a moment, hesitated, and quick as lightning jumped out of his hiding spot and in front of Doestar. He had contemplated tackling him, but for fear of hurting him even the slightest caused him to change his mind last second. He landed in front of him, letting out a loud yowl. “The revolution has begun!” He jumped back again, a purr rumbling deep and loud in his chest.
Doestar flinched backwards as Shadedstar leaped in front of him, dropping into a low crouch and baring his teeth in a playful hiss. "You're so lame," he giggled between hisses, eyes twinkling up at his friend. Bunching up his muscles, he let out a little battle cry and hurled himself at the other leader, catching him round the ears and pinning him to the soft grass with his paws on his chest. He knew his friend must have let himself be overpowered - there was nothing about Doestar that was particularly overpowering in the slightest - but the thought just made him smile; it was sweet, and selfless, and the idea that his own happiness was important enough to someone else to sacrifice their pride for did funny things to his heart. "Your throne is mine," he purred, grinning down at Shadedstar with a tilted head and bright, glittering eyes as the fireflies flitted through the still night air around them.
Laughing, a genuine, deep, joyful sound, Shadedstar lightly tapped Doestar’s chest with his paws. “Oh no!” He said in an over exaggerated, feigned surprise, “You caught me. What ever shall I do?” He purred, watching the fireflies flutter over Doestar’s head, almost like a halo. “How about you let me go, and I’ll show you the waterfall. Sounds like a solid plan to me, eh?”
He loved the sound of his laugh. "Mmmmm..." Doestar drooped his head to rest his forehead against Shadedstar's chest, pretending to think deeply with a soft little frown and twitching ears, "mmmmm—okay!" He let out a purr and stepped off the other tom, pawing excitedly at the flowery earth as he waited. "Let's go, let's g—wait!" He suddenly remembered the mouse Shadedstar had caught for him and perked his head up, trying to get his bearings in the dark, firefly-specked meadow. Finally picking up his own scent trail, he trot-limped back through the tall, slightly flattened grass, scooped up the mouse in his jaws, and returned to his friend with a bright smile. "Snack for the road," he chirped, bumping his forehead against Shadedstar's shoulder and raising one paw as he waited for him to lead the way. "We can share if you get hungry, like all good lovers do." He beamed up at him.
Bouncing ahead of Doestar, he felt excitement prickle underneath his pelt. He felt like he was flying, past the clouds in a whirl of happiness and warmth and familiarity. He turned back and smiled at Doestar—tonight, his Freckles. “I worked so hard to catch that mouse especially for you, lovely.” He purred, leading the way through the plentiful trees, mainly oak and cherry blossoms. “Camp is just over that way.” He gestured to the west, where in the distance you could see the slope that protected one side of the camp.
The gurgling sounds in the river came into earshot. It was slow tonight, calm and perfect for crossing. But, usually it was just up ahead? He focused his eyes a bit more, trying to make out the blurry shapes in the distance. A little way to the right he could see the stones that lay on the riverbank and there, beside them, was the river. Then the stepping stones should be up ahead. “Watch your step, the rocks can be slippery.”
"Everything is so pr—" His voice was muffled by the mouse in his jaws. He spat it out at his paws, picking it up against by the tail and carrying it daintily between his front teeth. He tried again, "Everything is so pretty!" He followed Shadedstar's gesture, craning his neck with his ears pricked curiously and peering into the distance at the camp. "I wanna see it one day, but, y'know, some cats might not be so friendly towards another Clan's leader just strolling into their camp and cozying up with their leader. Might have to make up some diplomatic excuse like I do with Chime—with—wow, is that the river?" He thought he changed the subject pretty flawlessly, but he was still blushing up to his ear-tips and his heart did a dangerous little flip-flop.
When they paused, Doestar glanced up at his friend with a concerned little frown. Was he struggling to see? The moon and stars were bright and the cloud cover was thin; he could see perfectly. Not wanting to say anything in case it made him self-conscious, Doestar smiled softly and stepped onto the slick bank, eyeing the stepping stones and bowing up and down as he assessed the jump. "Promise to be my dashing hero if I fall—" He leaped mid-word and landed shakily on three legs, the water lapping around his paws. He glanced over his shoulder with a beaming grin, slipping a little as he struggled to find a grip, and waited a moment before reaching across and stepping onto the next one. He glanced back again, waving his tail in the air. "C'mon, pretty boy!" he purred, his fractured foreleg held safely out of the water. "Bit hard to follow that perfect example of athleticism, I know, but I won't judge."
Shadedstar followed suite, eyeing the stepping stones—or more specifically, the black water swirling around them—rather nervously. He crossed these stones almost every day and they still made him anxious. “Oh, well, SpringClan is know for its beauty. I do live here, after all.” He smirked, jumping onto the first stone more fluently than Doestar. He eyed the water again before looking up at Foestar. Leaping onto the flat rock beside Doestar, he swiftly passed him, his heart beating a little. Catching Doestar’s sudden change of subject earlier was a bit—how should he say? Saddening? Chimerastar wasn’t suppose to be on Doestar’s mind right now, Shadedstar was! And the beauty of SpringClan and how much Shadedstar loved him. Wait? What? No way, not doing that. He didn’t love, love Doestar, did he? He couldn’t, considering he was a leader from another Clan and he had this thing going on with stupid Chime—the WaterClan leader.
You’re just being selfish, Shadedstar, stop that right now. You know he’s out of your league, yeah?
Shaking those thoughts out of his mind, he looked ahead as he reached the riverbank and landed on dry ground. “Not much further.” He purred. He had to focus on the here and now, nothing else.
Doestar smiled at Shadedstar as the other leader passed him on the stone, blissfully oblivious to any of his friend’s quiet pain. “Not much further for you,” he growled playfully, dropping into another crouch and wiggling his haunches as he assessed the distance to the next rock. Deciding it was better to just play it safe and clumsy, he stood back up and reached for it with his good foreleg, swiping uselessly through the air and the water spray for a moment before finally touching it and stepping awkwardly across. “Your leg is fine. I’m more like a dumb little badger or—or a vole than a cat.” He let out an amused purr that turned to a soft grunt as he leaped the final distance and landed heavily beside Shadedstar. “Ta-da!” he sang, hindleg slipping on the wet earth; he grinned brighter to cover for it, eyes bright.
Rubbing himself affectionately against his friend’s side, he trot-limped ahead a little way and glanced back over his shoulder with his tail waving in the air like a kittypet. “Hurry up,” he purred slyly, narrowing his eyes mischievously. “It’s waterfall time.”
Picking up his pace, Shadedstar leaped past Doestar, twitching his whiskers. “Well, crossing those stones isn’t much easier for me either.” He purred. His walk turned into a swift trot, and he gestured with his head in front of him. “It’s just up ahead.” He broke into a run, looking up past the trees and into the dark sky, now twinkling with stars. “Slowpoke.” He teased, slowing once again to a walk. The sound of falling water grew continuously louder, and soon enough it was echoing in his ears. The blurs up ahead squiggled and nodded until they formed the colourful shapes of the flower meadow, followed close behind by a ledge and, finally, the waterfall. Fireflies buzzed about and crickets chirped, the sounds of the night filling his ears.
“Voila.” He purred, pushing his way into the flowers. “The waterfall falls into a big pool, good enough for swimming if you’re into that stuff.”
Doestar limped along behind as his friend ran ahead like an excited apprentice, purring as he watched; he loved to see other cats happy and lost in their own moments. “Makin’ fun of an injured cat,” he teased, “real classy.” And then, there it was — the flower meadow. He looked around with a smitten, breathless grin, letting out soft little gasps as he drank in the beauty of it all — the flowers, the thunder of the waterfall, the fireflies, the crickets, all combining into a sweet-smelling, night-soft watercolour. He wanted to lose himself in it and never find his way back out.
“Wading, yes,” he replied, voice quiet and breathy and distracted as he slowly padded after Shadedstar, head tipped up to the sparkling sky. He felt tingly and weightless, like the magic was rubbing off on him. “Swimming, no. Shadedstar, this is beautiful.”
He trotted through the flowers, smiling like a complete idiot. “This is SpringClan, after all. We should have just been named ‘beautiful Clan with the most beautiful cat’ Clan instead.” Laughing at his own awful joke, he stopped just in front of the pool. It was surrounded by cherry blossoms, and when they fell they would float on the water. He looked back at Doestar, still grinning widely. Emotions came to him all at once, overlapping and fighting for space in his simple mind. Tonight was beautiful and joyful and cliche all at once and he loved it, every single second, and he wouldn’t trade it for the world. Wouldn’t trade Doestar for the world.
”Worth it, yeah?” He purred, eyeing the waterfall with a sense of wonderment, though maybe that was just Doestar’s presence.
