Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
"I'll be back this afternoon!" squeaked the E'clair kitten to her Cyd mother, who waved her off casually. Tasman got the same farwell every time that she went to see her friend. Eliza, her mother, often preferred that she stay in contact with other royals, but Tasman was good at making her mother upset. Plus, her siblings were sleeping like big lazy rumps, so the she-kitten needed something to do. "Tell them that I'm goin' on an adventure and if they weren't lazy saps they could have come with me!" she sang to her father as she exited the E'clair den. She paused only for Sasha to lick her on the head before darting off into the great big world, if by great big world she meant the connector path between her family's camp and the place where the nursery was.
The kitten let out a purr, before bounding into the gathering area. She had told her friend two nights before that she would come and meet her at dawn, so now all the kitten could do was wait.
She had been beyond excited at the news, believing it had been far too long since they had seen one another despite it only being a few suns. Her anticipation of the day had been so great she had struggled to sleep and now, on the very morn’ of such a rendezvous, she was sound asleep, her body winning the battle. She suddenly jolted upward, fine fur reminiscent of a cockatoo’s crest — the ultimate bedhead. Heart hammering, she looked arpund wildly, noting the color against the ground. It was far past dawn. She groaned and jumped up, quickly smoothing down her fur the best she could and tumbling into the light right at Tasman’s feet. A grin overtook her face at the sight of her friend and she leaped forward to nuzzle her affectionately. “Tasman!” The exclamation was interrupted by an undignified yawn.
The young cat skidded to a stop when she saw her friend, mostly to avoid taking both of them out at the same time. There had been a time or two where this had happened, that one of them had taken their running to greet the other a little too seriously and both ended on the floor. Luckily, the older they got, the more in control of her body Tasman seemed to be. Growing into her paws, one might say, although she was still very small.
"You missed a spot," Tasman, whose own fur was clean and perfectly in place, teased. She then took it upon herself to lick her friend's shoulder, smoothing the one spot down. "Lemme guess, you didn't wake up until about thirty six seconds ago?" There was a grin on her face, and it was clear that the words she spoke were nothing more than teasing her best friend.
She opened her mouth to object only to shut it with a bashful smile, cheeks heating. She purred in gratitude instead, standing straight. They were about the same height but Tasman seemed to carry it better; Talvi still stumbled around like a newborn fawn. “Maybe. Yes.” She wiggledher haunches. “How long do we have?” Deep down she knew how Tasman’s mother felt about her daughter spending time with her; she usually tried to ignore it. But a time zone had been initiated for them; possibly to keep them separate for as long as they coukd be. It didn’t usually work, but... She didn’t want her friend to get in trouble.
"Dad's on duty today," she meowed with a shrug. Although Eliza was good at nagging her, her parents took turns with who had duty to watch the kittens. It was easiest for both of them that way. It allowed Sasha time with his children, and it gave Eliza time off from motherhood. Yesterday, it had been Eliza's turn to watch them. It had been why they couldn't play the day before. Today, she was lucky that she was under her dad's rule. Although it was through Sasha that they got their royal name, he was the one that was much less focused on what was proper for royalty. "As long as I'm back by dinner, it's probably fine? If it's not, Aylik has legs and I'm sure Dad'll send him our way to retrieve me." Her voice was warm as she spoke, particularly as she spoke about Aylik. Even now, the two were very close. "He was too busy sleepin' to come now," she then explained; often, she had him in tow.
A warmth spread within her at the mention of the tom and she smiled. “Awesome!” She bounced once to calm the excited tongling in her paws. “What should we do?” She looked around. They weren’t unfamiliar with sneaking around; Talvi loved exploring anything new andhad been trying to come up with ideas for activities during their time apart, but now that they were together and they had the rest of the day she found her thoughts jumbled. An entire day for adventure and fun! She wanted to hoot in victory.
She grinned at her friend's enthusiasm, before looking off at the camp. "Have you eaten breakfast yet? I may or may notta skimped out on that, and ya know what they say, you can't have a big adventure with an empty stomach!" She laughed as her gaze landed on the kill pile. She then realized what she'd just asked. "Oh! Obviously you haven't eaten breakfast yet," she meowed in a very 'duh' moment. If Talvi just woke up, of course she hadn't eaten yet. Embarasment flooded her cheeks, but she laughed it off. She was sure that Talvi wouldn't give her too hard of a time about it, right?
Talvi laughed, relieved she wasn’t the only one that was having a slow morning. Nudging her in the shoulder, she smiled warmly at her. “Breakfast sounds good.” Her stomach rumbled as if on cue and she blushed in embarrassment, looking around to check if anyone else had heard it. “I’m starving!”
"Are you now?" Tasman smirked at her friend with a wink. "I never would have been able to guess." She winked again, before taking off towards the fresh kill stack. Although traditionally, there was not a big freshkill pile since the families were expected to be self-sufficient, it was the winter moons, so such rules were relaxed a little bit. "What are we feeling today?" she called over her shoulder. "Rabbit? Squirrel? Mouse?"
She laughed, racing after her. She tilted her head in thought, a serious expression on her face. “We could share the rabbit? Unless you’ve already eaten,” she blushed, reminding herself that Tasman had been up before her, “then I’ll take the mouse.”
"If I would have eaten already, would I have asked you?" Tasman replied quickly, although the smile on her face made it clear that her sarcasm wasn't meant to be hurtful sarcasm. "The rabbit is fine. You wanna grab it?" She gave her the biggest eyes she could muster, mostly because Tasman didn't want to drag the rabbit over to their favorite spot herself. It was so much easier to see if her very best friend would lug the weight for her...
Her smile dropped for a moment at her words but registering the sarcasm she chuckled a bit. “Right, obviously.” She rolled her eyes at herself. Even without Tasman’s begging she would have readily accepted the task. “Oh yeah, sure thing.” She leaned down and gripped the loose skin of the prey’s scruff in her mouth, eyebrows furrowed in concentration. “Just... hang on...” She swallowed the saliva pooling in her mouth and started to drag the prey over, her small body not yet strong enough to heft it completely. She grunted when she was done and grinned at her. “There we go!”
"Wow, my hero," she fawned, fluttering her eyelashes at her friend. She was mostly teasing, but also just incredibly glad she hadn't been the one to do the labor or bringing it over. Aylik was the one to do most (all) of the heavy lifting for her, which meant someone else had to take the reigns when her brother wasn't there. She then found herself in a seated position, motioning with her big fluffy tail for Talvi to do the same. "Since you brought it over, and because the look in your eyes makes it seem like you're about to starve to death," she teased lightly, "the first bite is yours."
Talvi smirked back at her, taking her jest in stride and leaning down to fill her upset stomach with the first morsel of the day. She much preferred rabbit over mouse any day; the meat wasn’t stringy and there was more to fill her stomach, but she often found herself facing guilt. She couldn’t justify eating an entire rabbit herself; especially being as young as she was. She’d grown used to smaller portion sizes and found ways to calm her erratic aura when she was questioned about it. On this day, at her friend’s side, sharing a meal and enjoying the warmth of the winter sun on her back, she found herself more calm than she had been in days.
Tas wasn't as sure that she had a favorite; after all, food, was food. Although, unlike many in BrookClan, she wasn't a fan of fish. This would probably one day prove to be a problem, but she'd deal with it when she got there, she supposed. She took a bite of her own, thinking about this and the nine million other things that happened to cross her mind. In doing so, a comfortable silence passed between the two. Tasman was okay such moments occurring between the two; the silence felt just as safe as anything else. Still, after a moment, she broke it.
"Did you have any idea for what you wanted to do today?"
Talvi lifted her head, cheeks puffed with food and juices on her maw. She swallowed loudly and licked her lips. “Not really. I thought we might explore, maybe keep going from where we last left off at the northeastern stream.”
Tasman considered this for a moment, before nodding. "That would be good, yeah. I feel like we're going to have to be extra careful today, though," she meowed with a soft expression on her face. "From what I've heard, they're doing kadet trials today, which means there'll be more adult cats out in the territory." They hadn't gotten caught yet, but what was to say that wouldn't change if they weren't extra careful?
She frowned, staring down at the half eaten rabbit. That idea made her nervous. They’d figured out ways to deal with her parents and any other hired caretakers that would come snooping with questions on their mind. But what would happen if they were caught by others? She nodded slowly and leaned down, taking a thoughtful bite. “We’ll just have to be like secret agents then.”
Amusement flicked in her eyes. Although Tasman was mature for her age, she was still a dedicate of Tiveronah. Being a secret agent sounded like fun. "Secret Agent Tasman Elizabeth E'Clair has a ring to it," she decided with a purr before taking another bite. "I'm sure even if we almost get caught we can fish our way out of it. We have before." She smirked at the memory of the time they had walked right into her father. That had been a fun one to get out of.
Her mind, too, drifted to that day at the she-cat’s words though she didn’t reflect upon it in the same light. Talvi was a dedicate of Cauil; often she encountered punishment merely with her actions. That day she’d felt it more than ever. She blushed. “Hopefully we’ll have more luck this time.”
