Ah, the crisp, cold nights and the bright, chilly days of Leaffall! Sunflare was in his element as he chased a fleeing gray squirrel all the from an old oak tree to the edge of the gorge that surrounds EarthClan. Before he could realize it, the nimble squirrel disappeared over the sheer edge. The orange tabby skidded to a halt, his feet stopping right at the precipice, with some small stones and earth actually falling over. Fox dung! he hissed out loud as he watched the squirrel getting away. Then the thought struck him. If a squirrel could climb down the gorge, why can't he? Never before had he even considered descending the steep barrier mainly because he had no reason to do so. But now is as a good time as any, his clan needed food especially now with the onset of colder weather.
Crystalfire watched with an amused expression. She had been hunting and had seen the gorge. She had hoped there would be some prey near the tom, but watching this would be just as fun.

Unaware he was being watched, Sunflare disappeared over the edge in pursuit of the elusive squirrel. He carefully followed a narrow ridge of earth that couldn't even be called a pathway that ran downward along the side of the gorge. Ahead of him the squirrel stopped and looked at the foolhardy cat who dared to follow him into this dangerous place. With a scolding chatter, the squirrel took off nimbly down the ridge until he came to a tree which grew out of the steep earthen side. In a flash he ran up the tree. Sunflare continued on until one of his hind feet slipped and he lost his balance. Immediately he flattened himself on the narrow ridge and wondered how he was going to get out of this predicament. If he continued on, the ridge became narrower and going back wasn't an option. There was no room for him to turn around.
The warrior's eyes widened. She scanned the situations, trying to come up with how he would get out. "Go as far as you can! Then see if you can leap to the tree the squirrel ran up." Her voice echoed in the gorge, causing a couple small pebbles to fall. She was above him, crouched next to the edge. Her eyes were calm and calculating as she analyzed the odd situation.

Sunflare was heartened to hear a clanmate's call of advice. He could do this! "I'm going to try," he replied without turning his head. He kept his eyes fixed on the tree ahead. Slowly he moved farther down the ridge until it was too narrow to continue. The tree was in jumping range, barely, but that was his only choice. Taking a deep breath and bunching his leg muscles, Sunflash leaped with all his might toward the tree with his claws extended. He landed on the bole of the tree and scrabbled with his hind feet to get a grip. "Made it!" he called then climbed up to a limb for a more secure footing. He looked up and saw that the tree just might reach the top of the gorge.

"Thanks!" Sunflare called out. "Go over to where the tree's branches reach the top and wait for me, okay?" He began to climb up the tree, the squirrel was all but forgotten until he heard a chattering over his head. The irritated tree rodent was upset the cat kept following him. "Don't worry. I'm not chasing you down," he told the squirrel although his words were useless to the squirrel's ears. His only concern now was to get out of the gorge. The squirrel kept running farther up the tree to keep out of the range of the cat which it was sure was chasing him. Then an idea crossed Sunflare's mind so he called up to his clanmate once again. "Hey! Maybe the squirrel will come over the top of the cliff as well. You might be able to catch it when it does."

"Don't worry about me," Sunflash meowed. "I've been in tougher scrapes. It's important the clan gets fed." He continued his climb up the tree same as the squirrel. The branches were getting thinner the farther up he went but they still were supporting him.

The squirrel was determined to stay ahead of the cat who was chasing him up the tree so much so he failed to notice the cat on the gorge's rim. He leaped out of the tree and onto the ground and looked back down the tree to the cat that was following him. "Hurry! He's out of the tree!" Sunflare called up to Crystalfire. Meanwhile he kept climbing steadily upward, carefully placing his paws on the ever so thinning branches.

Upon hearing a cracking sound of splitting wood, Sunflare scrambled upward faster and faster, eager to reach the top. More cracking of the tiny branches ensued until he finally leaped upward out of the tree toward the top of the gorge. He hit the rim with a thud, his front feet barely over the top. His hind feet churned against the side as he tried to gain a foot hold to climb up and out. Dislodged pieces of rock and dirt clattered on the rocks below. He clung on for dear life, half in and half out of the gorge.
Moments later, the warrior came skidding back. "I knew I shouldn't have left!" She cried out, reaching to grab his scruff. She struggled to haul him up, trying not to slide.

Sunflare continued to scrabble on the edge of the gorge sending a spray of rocks and earth down to the bottom. He felt Crystalfire's teeth in his scruff and tried harder. With her help, he finally made it out. "Thanks," he gasped from the exertion of his ordeal. "Did you catch the squirrel?"

"Good!" Sunflare replied as he shook out his fur. Pieces of dirt from the gorge wall and dead leaves from the tree had littered his fur. "I'm glad all this adventure didn't go to waste. There's at least something to show for it."

"Yes! Wasn't it great?" Sunflare asked, a genuine smile on his face. This orange tabby lived for the thrill and excitement of life. He'd climb back down into the gorge right now if he had a reason to do so. "What's more fun than looking death in it's face and spitting in it?" He quickly glanced around to see if there were anymore squirrels going over the edge.
