Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Effluentpaw cast another nervous glance over her shoulder before decided she wasn't ready to share her current woe with the medicine cat, not yet. So instead she decided to stall. "You know she's talking about sending you to Fallclan with Softpelt. To help teach their new medicine cat..."
"Apparently, from what I've heard they don't even have a medicine cat; only Softpelt who volunteered herself to go over and help." Effluentpaw hummed, trying to remember all the gossip she had gathered from her siblings. The other two always have ears to the ground and eager to know what their mother was doing, so as to better avoid ever being involved in any of it. "From how she left I imagine mother was eager for the chance to ship you off. She likes to hide away the things that frustrate her. Out of sigh out of mind as they say."
Fawnheart flicked the tip of her tail, clearly upset. "Whitepaw isnt ready to take on the responsibility of a medicine cat yet. Unfrotunately, his training had been on hold while we were captured." The medicine cat closed her eyes and took a deep breath, calming her nerves. "I dont think I could leave him here to hold down the fort."
Effluentpaw shrugged, rocking on her paws, "yes well I don't think my mother will accept that as an answer." The words were hesitant and a little distant, the apprentice obviously back within her own thoughts. "Just like I don't think she'll accept it when I tell her I'm expecting kits. Even I can't accept it yet, it's what I came here to talk to you about actually... I just want to make sure I mean mothers intuition but well, I'm only an apprentice!"
Fawnheart's gaze snapped toward Effluentpaw, surprise lit up in her amber eyes. It waa rare for apprenrices to be expecting kits but it did happen from time to time. "Okay. Lets take a look," the sweet medicine cat mewed gently, all of her own worries forgotten. Fawnheart felt around the apprentice's abdomen and gave her a close evaluation. After a few moments, Fawnheart looked at Effluentpaw seriously, "your pretty swollen. More so than you should be, that is. I'm sure I dont have to tell you what that means."
"For once I wish I could just bemoan being fat." Effluentpaw moaned in despair, nervous gaze flitting back towards the entrance nervous about someone coming in and overhearing. "What am I going to do? I can't tell my mother, I can't tell the father, what do I do?" Beseeching eyes turned to the medicine cat, seeking out the kindness the other portrayed.
"I-" She turned large doe eyes to the medicine cat, before blinking, "wait why? Is that important? Can't I just tell you it's a member of the clan. I don't want to say more, he's, I don't want him to get in trouble."
"Okay, I understand. You dont have to tell me. But, you will have to face your mother sooner or later. She will eventually know. Unless..." The medicine cat paused for a moment. "Unless we somehow hide it. I will have to think more about it but what if you gave birth somewhere else. Perhaps one of the other queens will adopt them. Then no one else will know."
"There are only two other queens and neither would I trust to raise my kits." Effluentpaw fretted, thinking paticularly of the rouge Squirrel who her mother had taken in. The queen had been nothing but vicious towards her. "But I had indeed planned on hiding it for as long as I could. Giving birth somewhere else would be easy, my mother would probably not even notice me gone."
Fawnhearts eyes widened, an idea had come to mind. "I know of someone who could take them! I know a she-cat in Moonclan. She's very kind and has had her own kits. However, her kits have all grown up but I trust her to take care of them. Even if she has to ask one of the other queens to nurse them for her. She would be an excellent mother to your kits. We can meet her if youd like? I'm a medicine cat so I can travel on any of the territories and as long as you are with me, you won't get into any trouble." She smiled, hoping she would convince her. "And if I know Silvershine, she will keep it a secret."
Expression twisting Effluentpaw considered her words, casting a look towards her paws. "I- I'm not sure I'd want them that far from me." She admitted. "I know they came from a mistake, but I think, I think if I can't raise them I would at-least like to watch them grow." Little did she know that even this small wish wouldn't be one that would be granted. Effluentpaw's doomed life trends would continue as they had been. "That's very kind of you though. But- I think I might have to tell mother..."
Fawnheart nodded in both understanding and pride that she had decided to make the right choice. "I will help you in any way I can. Even if your mother sends me a way for a while, if you absolutely need me, i will be there.'
Effluentpaw was deeply touched, having never had such kindness shown towards her. Yes her sisters loved her, but being raised by Eternalstar did not form one to express emotion easily. It meant their interactions were often stilted as they tried to figure out how to be a family but not truly knowing how. "Perhaps I could name one after you." She whispered, though she doubted that would be the case. It would feel too much like a bluff against fate.
Fawnheart flattened her ears and a smile spread across her face, "Thats so flattering, Effluentpaw. Whatever you decide to name your kits. Just know that I wont be offended if you dont name one after me" she purred, twitching her whiskers.
Nodding the apprentice looked around the den, "where's Whitepaw?" She wondered curiously, suddenly struck by the medicine cat apprentices absence. "Should I tell him as well?" She wondered, but was a tad nervous to risk that. She had seen the tom spending more and more time around her mother, and she knew how her mother could dig her claws into others; how she could change them."
"Im not sure" she confessed. "But its completely up to you whether you want to tell him or not. It would be a good idea in case I was not arround while you were going through labor. He can help me keep a close eye on you and make sure you dont have any complications." She brushed the apprentice with her soft tail. "Its whatever you choose. I'm just here to heal and offer guidance. I cant tell you how to live your life."
Effluentpaw clenched her jaw at the last words, noting with irony that for once she wanted someone to tell her what to do. Wanted someone to tell her how to make this all go away, to make it better. "I wish I could follow you to Fallclan." She whispered, though she knew she would never have the courage to go against her mother. Still to young to feel brave enough, and especially not when she was carrying kits her mother could possibly use as leverage.
"You can follow me. Softpelt needs an apprentice, you know" she answered in a hushed voice. All she wanted to do was help Effluentpaw. She saw so much potential in her and she knew it would be hard giving birth at her age and she needed someone there to keep her strong. Eternalstar would never take it easy on her and could potentially harm the kits with her lust for power and control.
