Glittering snowflakes fluttered in the air as a proud white and ginger tom strode across the camp, heading towards the exit. Having finally been released from the Medicine Den after overcoming exhaustion sickness, Creekghost wasn't planning on ever overworking himself again, but nevertheless he was still a clan warrior, and he had to pay his due to his home. He was planning on getting a few catches in before the snowfall got too heavy and covered up any scent of prey. As he trekked towards the forest, his ears twitched as he suddenly picked up the pitter-patter of tiny paws behind him. Sighing in exasperation, a mischievous smile crossed his face as he immediately picked up his pace. Hearing the frantic scampering at his heels, Creekghost's whiskers twitched as he attempted to keep himself from laughing. Finally he stopped in place, turning around fast enough to see a small ginger blurr dart behind the nearest rock.
"There's no use hiding, Firekit. I know you're there."
A few seconds went by before a pair of tiny ears poked up above the rock, followed shortly after by a pair of large, fern-green eyes blinking up at him. The eyes watched their father for a moment before the moon-old kit carefully padded out of his hiding place; a scrawny ginger-tabby kitten with a white bib on his chin that barely reached up towards his bright pink nose. It didn't come as much of a surprise; it was no secret that Firekit absolutely admired Creekghost more than anyone else in the clan. His father was the greatest warrior in Earthclan, and he was determined to be just like him.
"H-Hi Creekghost..." That apparently included attempting to follow his father out of camp.
Solsticestar turned to glance at the voice from where she was standing, a few tail-lengths from the warrior. She gave a hum of disapproval towards the kit.
Creekghost blinked, catching a glimpse of Earthclan's new leader out of the corner of his eye. Turning his head to meet her gaze, he flashed her a brief, sheepish smile before focusing back in his kit, who was curently shuffling slowly towards him, clearly sulking. Firekit's tail dragged along the dirt, and he purposely kept his eyes down. The warrior couldn't help but frown; being so new to parenting as he was, he wasn't sure how exactly to deal with this. "Firekit..." He sighed, "I'm positive Breezestep and the other Queens have told you that you can't leave camp. I know you really want to come with me, but you're far too young; I can't risk you getting hurt."
Firekit's pout seemed to grow hearing this, but he held his tongue, not wanting to get in trouble with either of his parents. "Sorry father."
The warrior snorted, gazing fondly on his precious son. "Don't say sorry to me. It's Solsticestar's orders you're disobeying in trying to sneak out." He gestured to the she-cat with his tail, and Firekit's eyes widened in fear, having just noticed his audience for the first time. Meanwhile, Creekghost sent her a glance that he hoped conveyed the message, 'please help me out here I've barely had a moment to myself in weeks please I'm desperate'.
"How about this? Until we return, Firekit, I want you to help Brimmingberry sort herbs. Understand?" She paused for a moment. "And if you sneak out again, I'll make you clean the elder's bedding."
Firekit's jaw dropped for a moment, barely believing his ears before he jumped up, facing the leader indignantly. "Seriously?! This isn't fair! I didn't even make it out of camp!" Unlike with his father, the rebellious young tom had no qualms with arguing with the clan leader herself. So what if she called the shots? His father was better than her anyway. Quickly deciding that he probably wasn't going to get anywhere with her, he turned back to Creekghost with pleading eyes. "Pleasssssse don't make me go to Brimmingberry," he begged. "She's so weird; she 's always watching me when she thinks I'm not looking..."
An unreadable look passed Creekghost's face for a few seconds, but it quickly passed before he leaned down to lick his son on the head, ruffling the kit's ginger fur. "Solsticestar's made her decision, so you're going to have to respect it. She could be much harsher on you, you know."
Firekit met the leader's gaze, staring at her intensely for several seconds. So intensely, in fact, that his face was scrunching up as if he was attempting to read Solsticestar's mind for her intentions. Finally, after several pretty awkward moments, he turned tail with a dismissive huff, marching towards the Medicine Den with his tail held proudly high. He only took a couple of steps before he suddenly stopped, glancing over his shoulder again at the two adults. "Have a good hunt, Father!" He chirped, smiling a little before promptly scampering off.
Creekghost's face brightened at his kit's well-wishes, beaming with pride at his strong-willed, albeit argumentive son. "Dear Starclan," he sighed to Solsticestar, chuckling. "What am I going to do with him? With all of them, honestly; with bigger personalities than the entire forest!"
She gave a warm purr of laughter. "One day, they'll be strong and loyal Earthclan warriors. For now, however, they are still kits." Her eyes shimmered tenderly. "Let them be kits. Let them have big personality before life truly hits them." She pointed out with a flick of her tail. "Let's go hunt."
"That is the best idea I've heard all day," Creekghost admitted, his gaze still staring after his son. Despite his desire to take a break, he was hesitant to leave his kits behind. The tom glanced over to Solsticestar, and willed himself to relax. The entire clan was here to take care of his family. He gestured towards the camp exit with his tail. "You lead the way."
Creekghost followed close behind the leader, and for a while the two of them walked in a comfortable silence, taking in the peace and quiet of Leafbare. There wasn't much snow on their territory yet, thank Starclan, but tiny, sparkling flakes fell from the sky, glittering in the sunlight. As they padded through the forest, the tom began to think, and before he could even bother attempting to stop himself, burted out. "Solsticestar, have you ever considered having kits someday? I think you'd make a good mother."
The tom nodded, understanding. "Yeah, I suppose that'd have to come first," he agreed with a chuckle. "It's always such a complex thing, finding a mate. Even though as clans we value survival more than anything else, most warriors don't prefer to take a mate unless it's for love, no matter how much more trouble it could bring them. Just look at me and Breezestep, for example."
