Springlockedgrave wandered the forest, keeping to herself. Ever since she'd lost her kittens, the she-cat had appeared... subdued. Her paranoia was still out in full force, but she tended to freeze up in fear more than break down and curl up nowadays. When she was alone, the she-cat tended to zone out until brought back to terrifying reality that elicited a faint squeal of terror. Now was one of those times. Her clanmates' presences were more overwhelming than usual, and as such, she'd quietly slipped away without a word. She hadn't expected to be followed, so lost in her thoughts that for once, the delusions had taken a momentary pause. So when the branch behind her cracked, her train of thought shattering at the sound, the golden feline froze dead still, claws out and fur raised in an instant. Jaw half open, the she-cat couldn't even formulate a scream nor was she able to bring herself to turn around and face the cat who'd chosen to trail her, leaving behind a silence that was deafening.

"did i scare you? i didn't mean to scare you," the voice of a young mother meowed. it sounded a little shaken, but, like springlockedgrave, the loss of a child was still present in every movement she made. featherwisp had not been prepared for the events that had occurred the night of the flood. she had not been prepared to lose a daughter to raging waters. however, unlike springlockedgrave, the loss had been confined to one kitten. the others were safe, fine, surviving. three out of four was not a bad ratio, was it? she was well aware that not a single soul in the nursery that night should have made it out, herself included.
"i had a question for you, and i've finally gotten brenna to watch the kittens for a little while. i thought maybe this would be a good time to ask, but i am sorry if i startled you!" her voice was nervous, the kind of nervous that reminded the entire clan that, although she was now a nursing queen, it had still been only a matter of moons since she had been little more than a kadet.

The Vrachi's mouth hung agape for a few moments as she listened silently without so much as turning her head towards the sound of Featherwisp's voice. Indeed, her daughter had died in the floods, if she recalled. In a way, Springlockedgrave felt worse for the younger she-cat. Many of her own kittens had disappeared or died, but none in nearly so horrible a fashion as drowning, and with some, there was, perhaps, the hope they may one day return, though she had little hope at all these days. Slowly, but surely, as though not to cause the feline who'd startled her to attack, her head turned, wide golden eyes locking onto the frame of the other cat. "Y-yes? Wh-.... Wha-what is it-t?" She spluttered, her voice soft as a mouse and just barely understandable. The young she-cat was nervous, but the older one was utterly petrified, even by such an unsure presence.
there was a part of the young cat who wanted to reach out to the vrachii, to brush her tail accross her shoulder. obviously, there was something wrong with her, a deep trauma that was just past the surface. featherwisp knew, though, that she had no business asking such things so directly. after all, she had never even really spoken to the older cat; what business did she have telling her that whatever was wrong, it would be okay? absolutely no business, yet the urge was strong in the small dilute calico.
"uhm," she meowed, shifting nervously on her soft paws in a half-dance. "i'm worried about delugekit. she is still not doing well." delugekit was the one twin that was able to survive being born in the rising tide. "she doesn't like to nurse, and she makes a lot of noise when she breathes. could she still be experiencing some trouble from her birth? or is my baby sick?" featherwisp's voice trembled; it was clear that the little cat did not want to lose another baby.

Something flickered behind the traumatized feline's eyes at the mention of the kit's condition. Springlockedgrave had been trying to keep up since the flood had swept through the territory, but it was simply unable to be done, truthfully. Without Bluepaw, heck, without Shiva, it was extraordinarily difficult. There was only so much one cat, who could hardly speak in intelligible sentences half the time, could do to check up on dozens of cats who may be suffering from the experience, whether they were sick or had relatives, mates... and yes, even kits, die. Her specialty was in mental health. Helpful, yes, but there were only so many hours in a day, and there were those still suffering in silence after having fallen through the cracks.
"Any symptoms other than not wanting to nurse and noisy breathing?" The stutter was gone now that her mind was focused, brought away from her thoughts to this one point in time, this one patient that she had to consider. It was perhaps her one saving grace. She was still nervous, flinching at any unexpected movement of brush or feline, but she was here, in the present, and not lost to one of her episodes of 'insanity'. "Things that might be innocuous at first, even. Is her breathing simply loud, or does it sound more wet, perhaps congested? Or more wheezy, like she's out of breath?" Springlockedgrave prompted slowly, considering the possibilities. Certainly, Delugekit could be sick, could be suffering from a complication from her birth, or even be anxious and panicked, though far to young to understand what she was feeling or why. Ultimately, she'd need to keep an eye on the podarok for herself to come to a definite conclusion, though guidance from the she-kit's mother would certainly help her steer towards the right answer.
the cat noticed the instant change in the feline's demeanor, but instead of finding it odd, the young mother found it immensely comforting. despite what everyone said about the cat, it meant that there was something still going on inside her head that would be able to maybe help her baby. As a mother, she didn't care how little Delugekit got help, as long as she got it somehow. Hell, she would travel across the whole territories to find a voodoo man in the mountains, if that was what it took to make it so only one of her kittens had to be lost.
"it sounds like its a labored breathing, if that makes sense. like it's hard for her. she coughs sometimes too," she meowed as she anxiously moved her weight between foot to foot. perhaps this was just the anxiety of a first time being a mother, as many of the other damy had warned her about. they told her that it might just be a way for her trauma to present itself in her. after all, the birthing was traumatic at best. but, on the other hand, maybe it wasn't, and maybe something was seriously wrong.

"Why... why don't you take me to her?" Springlockedgrave suggested, her tail briefly brushing across the damy's shoulders, perhaps accidentally, or as a way to comfort Featherwisp. Her expression now had morphed into something almost thoughtful, running through what might be the cause. Thus far, her symptoms could still include numerous illnesses, such as yellowcough, or could still mean the kitten had developed asthma, and ultimately it would come down to what other symptoms, if any, she displayed. All in the fine details. Hopefully it was something easily treated, rather than the start of something highly contagious. It was the time of year when they needed all the herbs they could get, and if an outbreak of any sort of illness occurred, leafbare would be difficult this year.
"Okay!" she chirped, almost too quickly. She had hoped that this was going to be the Vrachii's response, and honestly, it would have been the only thing that could have been done to really make the she-cat feel any better about her small child. "She's back in the nursery." She winced at that assertion. Normally, it was only Smallfire that resided in the permanent nursery, because all other kittens were raised with their family. Featherwisp was too young to raise kittens on her own, especially since she had had no real female role models in her life. Her own mother had died in childbirth, and the queen who raised her had caught green cough just as Featherwisp had been weaned. It had been an obvious choice, then, for the young cat to request Smallfire's help, which meant moving into the nursery until further notice.
With that, the she-cat began to walk with great urgency to where her kitten would be found sleeping...

Springlockedgrave quietly slipped up to the kitten, gentle nudging her with her nose while listening to her breathing, to get a feel for the sound as well as feel for a fever, or any sort of scent that would mark her as 'sick'. "Time to wake up." The Vrachii cooed, her tone startlingly gentle as she spoke to the sleeping kitten, trying to rouse Delugekit without startling her awake.
The kitten's soft-colored eyes blinked open sluggishly. She didn't smell quite of decay or anything, but she had run a fever the last few hours. Her ma had told her that maybe she should try sleeping off the shivers, as Delugekit called them.
"Huh-wha?" she meowed at the touch of the Vrachii, before lettting out a loud kitten cough. "What are ya?"
"Hush, hush," purred Featherwisp, trying to comfort her. "Mama's brought her friend to make it so you feel better. She's going to check you all over and then you are going to feel so much better," she promised her child, even though she wasn't sure she could really make that promise.

"I'm going to bring you back to my den, and we'll get you nice and warm there, okay?" Springlockedgrave assured, already checking over the she-cat. Fever and cough. The simplest answer was whitecough or greencough, but that didn't necessarily account for the loss of appetite. Of course, that could be explained away as not feeling up to eat. "Do you have a sore throat at all, Delugekit?" The Vrachii gingerly picked up the kitten, nestling her close to her body as she slipped out of the nursery and towards her own den near the waterfall. The next on the list was yellowcough, though if she lacked the sore throat and delirium, that, at least, could be ruled out. With the fever, she was almost certain the kitten was sick, and as such, wanted to separate her from the rest of the clan, though she'd been there long enough that she could very well have started an outbreak. She'd have to see how the podarok responded to treatment and perhaps quarantine the entire nursery.
Alternatively, it could still be something not contagious, such as pneumonia, but she'd have to take a closer look in her den for that, she hadn't noticed any discharge from the kitten's nose, which would indicate that it wasn't this.
did not go into this imaginging that i'd be giving a kitten yellowcough but here we are.
Featherwhisp followed nervously, her tail hanging low to the ground as Springlockedgrave transported her kitten. Should she alert Brenna? Was she supposed to come in the den? She didn't know the answers to either of the two questions, and the stress it was putting on her made her head hurt slightly. Not having any better ideas, she slipped into the den after them.
The kitten looked up at the vrachii, her eyes wide. Where was she, exactly? The den smelled of herbs... Oh, right. The Vrachi's den. Was this going to help her? Her mama had said it would, but she wasn't all that convinced. All she wanted to do was go back to sleep.... There was an uncomfortably long pause before the kitten realized that she was being spoken to. Her throat? She thought for a moment. "A little bit, yes..." her voice trailed. "Mama told me that that happens sometimes when you do a big big cough..."

The Vrachii set Delugekit down carefully in a nest, turning briefly to Featherwisp. "Why don't you go grab one of the moss balls over there and bring some water for Delugekit?" She suggested, noticing the she-cat's nervousness growing as time went on. Besides, she worked better on her own, and the break from the feline would clear her head. The damy's worry was making her anxious as well, and she could already feel the tension returning to her muscles with the feline's constant presence.
With that, however, she turned back to the she-kit, watching her for a few moments as she waited for her answer. She seemed out of it. Now, she could have dismissed that as well, due to the fever and being woken up, but with the sore throat and other symptoms, the Vrachii came to the conclusion that she most likely had yellowcough. Luckily, she had lungwort. Unfortunately, it was contagious. "Your mom is right. Coughing can cause sore throats." Having made her diagnosis, she set about making two piles, one for Delugekit, and the other for Featherwisp. The first contained lungwort, feverfew, a single poppy seed, and some honey. The lungwort was most necessary, but given the kitten's temperature, she added the feverfew, just to help ensure that her temperature dropped to an acceptable level. The poppy seed and honey were to help her get some rest, be able to palate the herbs a bit better and hopefully soothe her throat. She chewed the first two herbs into a poultice, before mixing in the poppy seed and a small amount of the golden liquid and placing it on a leaf. The next herbs, she simply left whole. This was simply lungwort and thyme. The former in case the she-cat was ill, the latter to help calm her down when she returned.
Sliding the poultice beside the kitten, the Vrachii spoke softly, "Eat this, and you'll feel better soon enough." She assured, waiting a moment before she fed the kitten the herbs, her paw lightly stroking the podarok's throat so as to encourage her to swallow.
"Oh, okay," meowed the mother, before darting her body towards the moss. Her paws were shaky as she collected it. The way that the Vrachi looked at her daughter made her stomach turn. The mother couldn't handle losing another one, could she ? She had already lost one in the flood. Her eyes began to water at the thought, before she clenched her daw. No, Featherwisp. You must be strong for your daughter.
Meanwhile, the kitten felt her gaze try to lock on the Vrachi as she spoke. It was hard for the kitten to keep her focus completely, but if her mama brought her here, she knew that she needed to at least try. She then looked at the herbs that were presented before her. Her stomach churned slightly at the sight of the poultice, mostly because it was the first thing the kitten had eaten in a day or so, or would eat, that is. She gave it a sniff, before the Springlockedgrave fed it to her. The honey cloaked most of the taste, but she had never been encouraged to swallow before and she couldn't say she particularly liked it. She swallowed, though, and let her eyes drift to her mom. "You promise this will make me feel better?" she asked as Featherwisp came back with the moss ball.
The queen nodded slowly at her kitten, but said nothing, as she was waiting to see what Springlockedgrave had to say.

"The herbs will start working soon, and then you'll feel better and be able to get some proper rest." Springlockedgrave assured, before turning to speak with Featherwisp again, her tone low as she explained the situation. "Delugekit has yellowcough. I have the herb to treat it, but it's contagious, just like greencough. I have some herbs for you to take as well since you've been exposed. I will notify the rest of the cats in the nursery as well as anyone else you know has come into contact with Delugekit since she started feeling ill that they're under quarantine for the time being. While it's treatable, we want to avoid using our entire supply of the herb before leafbare." All in all, despite her attempt at a reassuring tone, the situation didn't seem all that positive.
"If it's any consolation, Delugekit should be fine. I'll keep her here for the time being and monitor her health, but she should be alright in a few days."
Featherwisp felt her heart drop. "Yellowcough?" she sputtered, perhaps a little too loudly not to alert the kitten. "No, she can't. That... no. You're wrong, you've got to be wrong." She felt her eyes water. She had just expected this to be a complication of the flood, and now she was telling her that her kitten had to be quarentined? This couldn't be right... "She should be fine?" she then squeaked out. "She has to be fine! It isn't fair. They can't take two from me." Distress was clear in her voice and body language as she began to tremble. She had been able to cope with the loss of one kitten, and the mother couldn't fathom another.
"Mama," squeaked the kitten after she swallowed her herbs. "What's wrong, mama? Spr-grave," she asked the Vrachi, unable to pronounce her name, "what's wrong with Mama?"

"Your mom just wants you to get better soon, and she's sad that it'll take a few days until you're in tip top shape." The Vrachii responded, her tone soothing and gentle in comparison to Featherwisp's fear. "But you don't need to worry, because soon, you'll be up and running around again like you were just a bit ago." Springlockedgrave pushed the lungwort and thyme towards the Damy, her gaze flicking between them and the she-cat with an encouraging expression.
