Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. With a slow breath, Sammy stretched his legs, standing and exiting the den. It was sunset, but the warm rays of the sun was still a welcomed sight. After how much rain had pelted them, every cat was pleased to see light again. For the first time in what felt like moons, the boyar had slept until he was almost sick of sleep. While his muscles still ached, he felt much better than he had in a long time, even after the warmth of his mate had left the nest. His eyes immediately began to seek out Gabriel, but to no avail. With a disappointed sigh, the tom approached the fresh-kill pile to pick out something to eat.
the sun was something that he had missed on his pelt. it felt like the rain would never end, that the water's tides would never go down, and then, just as suddenly as the raging water started to rise the tides were parted and birds began to chirp. despite the chilling of the air that occurred every time at this time of year, the world felt different. reborn into something that should be saved for spring. he found this odd, but he also found it incredibly comforting. for all brookclan had lost while the waters raged, they deserved this time of peace. tiveronah had had her chance to rule over this world for far too long; it was time for order to regain control. marli's scent had hung loosely over the bodies of the felines for just as long; it was time for life to regrow.
brenna blinked his sun-colored eyes, his black pelt shifting with each motion that he made closer to the fresh kill pile. it was still odd for him that brookclan had resorted to using one. it had always been each cat for themselves, codified in the rules of the monarchy, yet struggle had brought them all together. this was the most clan-like brookclan had been in a while, something he expected was simply because of the fear that the cats around him felt. many had been hesitant to go back to familial coves. even kerrigan, he had noticed, had been sleeping in comraderie with the others in the makeshift camp that had been put into place while the rest of the territory fully dried out. it was strange. he was used to a fractured society, one where families were loosely tied together for a greater good, but mostly weren't at all.
it was then that brenna heard the disappointed sigh. he had been placing his most recent kill on this makeshift pile when it occurred, and as soon as it did, the tom's ears perked. his large black head turned to the source of the noise: sammy. "something wrong?" he asked, his dark-chocolate voice, one that seemed to fit very nicely with his large black body, sounding perhaps more curious than concerned.
The boyar gave the tom a warm smile at the question. "No, no. Just couldn't find Gabe." Despite knowing that soon everything would go back to normal, Sammy had to admit he had enjoyed everyone coming together. Because of how spaced out the clan was, it was hard for the tom to get to know every cat he needed to. He knew most of his family now, but outside of that, he knew very few cats. He winced at the pounding in his head, but other than that, he didn't let the pain show as he refocused on the other tom. For a moment, Sammy's eyes took in every feature of Brenna, trying to memorize it for next time they met. He glanced back up. "Oh! I'm Sammy!"
his frame was not particularly hard to memorize. it was muscular and towering, dark black marked by deeper markings that were almost imperceptable unless the sun was directly on his body. otherwise, he was just like any other large, black furred tom. even his sun colored eyes were not particularly stunning; the shade was not an uncommon hue.
"oh, well, i have yet to see him this morning," he meowed, his words falling effortlessly out of his mouth. his nose twitched slightly, before tilting his head. "yes, i know you're boyar sammy?" it was almost a question that came out of his jaw. did this tom not realize that he was of the most powerful cats in the clan? or did he assume brenna did not keep up with daily politics, as brenna knew some cats didn't? a quizzicalness entered his yellow gaze. "my name is brenna," he then offered. perhaps that was what the tom had wanted, an introduction from the black cat?
The tom smiled brightly at the introduction, his eyes sparkling. "It's nice to meet you!" His voice was bright and peppy, though there was an edge of exhaustion to it.
"the pleasure is mine," he meowed, although there was still an air of confusion in his voice. this was an odd cat, especially if you were to juxtapose him next to his younger sister, the tsar. he was... friendly? not that kerrigan was unfriendly in nature, as she was a charasmatic charmer when the situation called for it (she found that it just seldom called for it), but he seemed different. perhaps, he thought to himself, this is due to his socialization. but, were the regime cats friendly in nature? this quickly looked like perhaps an incorrect idea.
brenna blinked again, moving the thoughts from his mind. it was unfair to be suspicious of this feline, especially if his only grounds for suspicion was amiability. wasn't it a desire that all of bc may one day be more amiable?
"you sound pretty tired," he then observed, in part to get his mind off of the train of thought he was quickly contained in. the tom, known for his awwkard nature, then winced. even for him, that was an uncomfortable phrase.
His bright smile gave way to one of sadness. "Yes. I was awake for days during the storm, keeping watch." While it hadn't been asked of him, the boyar's gentle nature, had taken on an edge of protectiveness for his clan once he joined the Monarchy. It was something he couldn't help, seeing as this had quickly become his home and life. In the regime, the raiser never felt the overwhelming loyalty he did here. The only two who he felt such a loyalty to was Gabriel and Castiel, seeing as one was his mate and the other was his best friend. After a moment, he glanced up at the sky. "Finally though, I should be able to catch up on sleep."
"It's about time." Alyx muttered as he approached the fresh kill pile joining the two chatting toms. The High Priest was still getting used to his new status, he had just gotten used to being Curate when Kerrigan promoted him. He only hoped he would not disappoint the tsar. Though he had never let her down before. Frost blue eyes flicked to and fro between Brenna and Sammy, he couldn't help but, notice that Sammy was missing one short brown tabby that was normally plastered to his side but, chose not to comment on his mate's absence. "Things should start to calm down and return back to normal soon, these things just take time."
brenna tipped his head to the high priest. despite little time having passed since the feline was promoted to the position, he now held the second highest honor of the group, only behind kerrigan herself. it was a strange structure that this group had, a dynamic that was uncomfortable for many cats. wouldn't the boyar be the second most powerful cat in the group? not in the monarchy, where religion was one of the core foundational aspects of the group. sure, sammy was a cat not to cross, but on the totem pole, he was third.
"i hope you are correct. i almost feel like i'll never be un-water logged," he meowed, flexing his arm muscles. the water that had been drowning the group had taken a toll on each of them, and brenna was not so lucky as to escape this universal truth. after all, one of his daughters had died in the flood, something that he had yet to admit out loud as if to stop the intense emotional effect it could have on a cat. featherwhisp was doing surprisingly well with the fact that only three of the kittens birthed when the floodgates broke survived, so he felt he must at least present that he was doing well, too.
"i am surprised that the spirits allowed tiveronah to be in power for so long," he then meowed, almost as if he was asking alyx for a reason. "first, naveen and shattered, then the murder of bluepaw, then the disappearance of shiva, and then this..." his eyes wandered around the camp, where cats, exhausted from the battles they had been forced to fight, lounged.
Sammy dipped his head in respect to Alyx before nodding to Brenna. "It was definitely not an easy time." His thoughtful voice was a gentle murmur, ending in a small hum. After a moment, he glanced up towards the dusk sky. "Still, it brought new life at the same time." While it didn't make everything okay, new life was always a blessing.
"and took some at the same time," brenna countered, his tone surprisingly sharp. sammy had been there when one of his daughters drown because featherwisp's body decided at the worst possible moment that it was the kitten's time to come. or had he forgotten that? had he forgotten that currentkit was not the only life lost to the water? kerrigan had lost one, caroline was now dead. in the game of losses and gains, brenna found that this time, brookclan was deeply in the hole. did sammy not, too?
He dipped his head. "Yes...I know." The tom looked away and closed his eyes. After a moment, he glanced back up. "Nothing can be done though. Rebuilding should be our priority."
His tail thrashed, proving he did not accept this answer. However, the Tom said nothing of the nature. He didn’t express that he thought that an immediate rebuild was disrespectful to the lives lost. Anger flashed for just a moment, before the time forced his fur to lay back on his body flat. Brenna let out a breath and once again he was calm.
“Has all of the territory dried out?” He asked to change the topic. It was safer that was, safer i get as far away from the topic of loss as possible. He had not experienced the entire territory yet. There had been too much rebuilding to do to explore it all for himself. He assumed that Sammy would have.
It wasn't normal for the boyar to speak that way. Normally, the tom was kind and sympathetic, but the lack of sleep must have been getting to him. His outlook had a pessimistic twist to it, while still maintaining that kind personality.
He gave a thoughtful hum. "Not entirely, but it's slowly getting back to normal. A few areas are still muddy or have a bit of water, but the territory seems to be healing well." He gave a warm smile as he spoke.
Was a lack of sleep justification for a lack of sympathy? Surely, all cats at this point in their lives were experiencing a lack of sleep. They were all experiencing probably a lot more than that, if they were all being honest with each other. Life was particularly draining at this point. Brena would say nothing of this sort, though.
"I'm surprised. I expected some long term damage," he meowed as he blinked the thoughts away. "Has the order been made for cats to let the water clear up for a few days before drinking freely from any point of the territory?" He doubted it had. Kerrigan wasn't the type to think about periphery things all the time. "If not, it might be a good idea to keep cats away from water that isn't expressedly clear?"
"Perhaps you and I should see if there is any notable signs of danger? The quicker it can be confirmed that there is not, the safer the clan will be." If Brenna would have been part of the royal family, he would have been a fine cat to assume a higher rank than viony. He thought like a general, even though he'd never reach any rank even similar.
The tom nodded, turning to head into the forest. Unlike Brenna, Sammy had been given more than one high position in his life. From being Head Raiser Cadet to becoming the raiser superior to now being the boyar of Brookclan, the tom was no stranger to high positions.
Brenna knew this about the tom, and perhaps it was why he was so distrustful. He still did not understand why the Tsar had thought it a good idea to invite a stranger into their masses, even if he was her blood. Especially a stranger who had ties to other groups...
