Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. The forests of Springclan were eerily silent this particular morning. Only the soft crunch of morning frost being stepped on under Thistlestar's paws was to be heard as the leader engaged in his routine walk. It had been moons since the dusty tom developed this habit, though today was one of the first times he partook in the walk for a much different reason.
His spring green eyes gazed the forest ahead of him, and visible shroud of tranquility cloaking his every moves. Despite having put to rest his relentless search for Bee, the habit of waking up early in the morning to do his search was a hard one to break. The vivid image of the ginger she-cat materialized in his mind, but instead of feeling frustration and concern at the thought, he felt peace. After moons of search, Thistlestar had at last found acceptance in the fact that the she-cat was gone. He couldn't help but offer a small smile to himself. It was progress, a step in the right direction for healing.
Breaking out from the forest, Thistlestar was met with the sight of a large and rather barren flower field. He glanced out thoughtfully, sighing as he took in the field with quiet pride. His clan needed him now more than every, not only physically but mentally. Though the decision was a difficult one, he knew it was for the best. Something in his gut told him that it was alright to let go, that Bee was indeed out there somewhere, but she was safe. That instinct gave Thistlestar enough confidence to move forward, despite the small ache in his heart.
Bee had fought the urge to come back, for many reasons. The first of which being she had been gone so long, and this alone meant so much could have changed. So many worst-case scenarios flashed through her head as she made the journey back to Springclan territory. What if Thistlemask was gone? What if he had moved on and found a mate? What if he wouldn't forgive her for leaving, and he refused to see her?
The second reason was that she felt different. Love, repressed as it was, and the experience of joining and leaving a group, plus the confrontation she had had with Jay... all of these had changed her in some indescribable way. She was young, but she felt so old, so weathered. But a weight had lifted the second she decided to return. Bee hated unfinished business. That was why she had left in the first place, though it was also fueled by her fear of her own emotions.
However Thistlemask felt about her now, she needed to give him and herself closure. And if things went well, she was willing to stay, for good this time. There was nothing pulling her away anymore, and she knew, truly, how she felt about Thistle. She had felt it every night she was apart from Springclan. Bee had missed the steady tom, missed him deeply. Now her journey was coming to an end, as her paws moved past the border, entering the familiar smells of Springclan. Her nose picked up the scent of Thistlemask, fresh and leading to the left. Her heart did a queer little jerk in her chest, and she moved forward, following the smell.
Thistlestar began to take a step forward but stopped himself. After so many times, his body already knew where to go, the same path, the same route every night and and every morning. His brows furrowed as he realized this, taking a few steps back. 'Progress' he mentally reminded himself as his green gaze looked out at the path ahead of him. He knew going down it, part of him would want to search out onto the horizon out of habit, in search of a ginger cat who would never return. He knew he would face the usual painful pang of disappointment. Conflict brewed in him for the first time this morning but with a heavy sigh, he forced himself to turn back from the direction he came and began his trek back to camp. His stomach flipped at his own decision and a sudden and powerful wave of emotions hit him as he proceeded to walk back. It felt wrong, so wrong, but he knew this was the right decision for him in the end. His gaze burned into the grassy path under him as he fought hard against the rather powerful emotions. Guilt held a tight grasp on Thistlestar, squeezing out more memories of Bee. Her sly grin, her thoughtful gaze, the memories of her opening up to Thistlestar on her past, the look of hurt in her eyes as she recounted those who hurt her before. Lost in his own memories, Thistlestar failed to realized recognize the familiar scent of the ginger she-cat mistaking it for just another vivid recollection. With his eyes glued to the forest floor below him, he didn't see the distant shape of a ginger she-cat heading in his direction...
Bee's breath escaped her in a quiet, pained whoosh when she caught sight of Thistlemask. He was retracing his steps, their paths on a collision course into another once again. She stopped where she was, watching the tom walk directly at her with his gaze to the forest floor. It wouldn't take long for him to reach her now, unknowingly, and she couldn't make herself move towards him, or call his name. The small ginger she-cat could only stand, frozen where she was by the waves of longing and joy and pain that washed over her.
Would he smile when he saw her? Would anger fill his soft green eyes? What understanding would pass between them? Could he forgive her? Her stomach constricted, her nerves making her slightly nauseous as the tom she loved and lost drew closer, step by step. All she could do was wait.
As the leader veered forward blindly, a soft breeze tickled his whiskers and with it bringing a more powerful and distinct scent. The realization of the familiar scent caused Thistlestar to stopped suddenly in his track, shock freezing him in a state of paralyzation. Slowly, his gaze rose up from the forest ground to find the sight of Bee. He blinked a few times, his eyes widening as he took in her small frame slowly. It couldn’t have been her. He watched on in silence, his brows furrowing slowly as he stared longer and and longer in silence. He had dreamed of this happening almost every time he went out on patrol, so much so he feared the sight before him was just another trick his hopes played, but as the she-cat stared back the sight seemed more real than it did a figment of his imagination.
“B-Bee...” He breathed, his chest rising heavily as his body struggled to control his breathing. “Is it... really you?” He spoke now, a bit louder but his deep tone mummed his words as he slowly took a step forward. His heart lurched as he progressed slowly towards the she-cat, new waves a emotions rising from his stomach to his chest as he made his way towards the figure, his eyes glassy as they scanned each and every inch of the she-cats form.
"Yes." Bee's response was simple, but the word carried a break of emotion, her whiskers twitching as she swallowed nervously. He didn't seem angry, and she managed to move her shaky feet forward a step, tilting her delicate head to the side as she approached. "I came back to see you, Thistlemask. I shouldn't have left like I did. I'm so sorry." The words spilled out in a rush, a plea for forgiveness. She had fled in selfishness, not stopping to think how her disappearance would hurt him, but she had regretted it ever since she'd come back to her senses.
His scent was so heartbreakingly familiar, drowning her senses as they stood inches apart. She had to look up slightly, with his taller stature, and her distinct honey-colored gaze took him in, savoring the sight she'd been longing to see. "I missed you so much," she breathed before she could stop herself, caught in the rush of emotions.
Thistlestar blinked as the sweet sound of Bee's voice rang in his ears, a wave of relief washed over him, melting him slightly as he watching the she-cat intensely. Her words were clear despite begin rushed, but Thistlestar couldn't focus clearly on the words as he found himself too deep in awe of the sight of the she-cat, taking her in intently, noting no visible marks, fresh wounds, and well kept ginger pelt. They only stood inches apart, but it still felt so far for the leader. It had been so long since he took in those honey-colored eyes. As she spoke on, his body itched to get closer. He struggled to keep the little space between him as slowly. Her final confession was all that the dusty tom needed to close the gap and without further hesitation, he pressed forward, nuzzling the she-cat close to him, rougher than even he expected. The little voice in his head chided him for his forwardness, but it was merely a whisper in a sea of content and emotions as he held the she-cat tightly again him with his head.
There as so much to say, so much to explain, but the powerful emotions rendered Thistlestar silent as he reveled in the she-cat's touch. "I'm so relieved you are safe." He finally mustered, his voice shaky and distraught, revealing more emotion from inside the tom than he had ever heard from himself since his mother's passing. The sound of his emotion filled words even shocked the leader himself, but that shock passed as his mind returned back to what truly mattered in that moment.
Bee closed her eyes, resting in Thistle's embrace, her own cheek rubbing against his shoulder affectionately. This was better than she'd hoped for, having prepared herself to possibly face the brunt of his anger, and instead being swept into his affection. A soft purr burst from her chest as happiness washed over her afresh. It would be easier to explain herself now, knowing that his first reaction wasn't anger.
"Am I'm relieved you're still happy to see me," she said softly in return, the shakiness of his tone driving a wedge of pain into the moment. Bee felt guilty once more of leaving him to wonder and worry, and she pressed her nose to his cheek, exhaling slowly. "I was worried you'd hate me for leaving like I did."
Thistlestar shook his head quickly into the she-cat's ginger pelt "I could never hate you." His deep voice was muffled by the she-cat's ginger fur, his purrs growing loudly as he pulled back and Bee pressed her nose to his cheek. His eyes closed slowly in content, taking the moment to regain his composure. His gave himself moments of silence to steady his breathing before he reopened his eyes, locking onto Bee's honey-glazed orbs. His glassy eyes betrayed the turmoil of emotions within "I waited and searched for so long." He breathed, his voice still slightly shaken from the storm within. "But Blackstar-" he stopped, his gaze falling slightly before quickly locking back onto the she-cat "I was given new responsibilities and I had to look after the clan completely..." Guilt dripped in each word as he searched the she-cat's expression "I couldn't leave my clan... I wanted to, to find you."
"You did the right thing, by staying. They need you, and I know how to take care of myself," Bee sat, keeping her lean frame close to the warmth that came from Thistlestar's body. "I left because I needed to confront Jay, and also because I couldn't be around you at the moment." She shifted, staring down at her feet. "But the way I left was immature and inconsiderate. I came back to make it right and own up to why I left you."
Starclan, she felt so awkward and unsure of herself. But now was as good a time for confessions as any, before she lost courage. "I ran away because I was- I am- in love with you, Thistlemask. I was terrified of my feelings because I've never felt this strongly before about anyone. I just... I felt so young and I didn't want to rush into anything. But I couldn't outdistance my feelings for you, and they never faded, no matter how long I stayed away. I finished my business with Jay and tried to move on, but you were always on my mind, and I couldn't start again. So I came back to be a big girl and own up to everything."
Thistlestar listened on, partly to listen to what Bee had to said and partly just to hear her calming voice. How he missed her voice. He sat in suit with Bee, his haunches shaky with anticipation. His black ears flickered at the sound of Jay's name, his fur bristling as a wave of heat washed throughout his body. He pulled back his head to look at Bee's expression, his eyes sharpening as he stared into the she-cat's orbs, concern bright in his green stare.
When the she-cat paused in her explanation, concern was replaced by confusion. Worry grew as the she-cat grew visible uncomfortable. Thistlestar watched on, opening his mouth the speak, to offer some consolation but Bee beat him to it, speaking out words the tom had not expected to hear, leaving in in silent awe. His heart raced at the confession. The tom suddenly felt light headed as shock shifted into glee and a wide smile grew across his muzzle. "Bee... I always loved you." He breathed, holding the she-cat's gaze as he mustered the words that had long stayed trapped in his heart. "I never stopped."
Bee's fur flushed with heat, her heartbeat erratic in her chest at the mutual confession. The edges of her eyes crinkled as she smiled in return, burying her face in the curve of his neck, ecstatic and terrified of what all of this meant. "Thank Starclan," she whispered with a tiny laugh, pulling back. "Then I'm here to stay. There's nothing pulling me away any more. I promise I won't run away again."
After a long moment of gazing into his eyes, she cleared her throat, bringing herself out of the throes of emotion. "So... Blackstar is gone? And you're like, the leader leader?" In the beginning, his position of power as Deputy had thrown her off, with her natural mistrust of authority, but she had gotten over it. Leader was a step up, but it didn't worry her like it used to.
Hearing the she-cat preach Starclan made the tom quietly laugh, remembering how odd the idea of Starclan was to the she-cat when she first arrived to Springclan. Thistlestar purred loudly as he felt her nuzzle closer into him, focusing intently on the she-cat's comforting touch and declaration.
The reminder of Blackstar was like a bucket of cold water hitting the leader. He stared off for a moment, his brows furrowed at the memory of the previous leader. "Blackstar left, unexpectedly." He voiced quietly, seriousness grew in Thistlestar's voice as he recounted the events. "I had to take over Springclan unexpectedly." He finished briefly, his gaze returning to Bee's, offering her a small light hearted shrug. "I took on my new name moons ago, Thistlestar." He spoke quietly, watching the she-cat's reactions weary of her reaction. He knew Bee had her own personal quarrels with those in leadership thanks to Jay. He wasn't too sure her mindset though. After so much time away, there was so much that had changed within his mind and heart, he was sure it was the same for Bee.
"So... Jay." He asked carefully, his expression softening with concern as he hesitantly spoke the rouge's name. Just saying the name out loud caused a pang of anger to grow inside of Thistlestar followed by a heat of burning protectiveness for Bee.
"Thistlestar," she echoed the name after him, trying to get used to the sound on her tongue. It was strange, but nothing she wouldn't get used to. "I'm sorry that you had to go through that so quickly. But I have no doubts that you're a great leader. I know how dedicated and selfless you are, and I'm here if you ever need to be less serious and authoritative than you normally do." As the topic turned to Jay, she sighed.
"I had to accept that Jay wasn't malicious towards me, just selfish and stupid. He was around me for my whole life, telling me he took me in after my parents died, but he was the one who killed them, in reality. It was over a petty border dispute, but he hadn't realized they had a kit. So he took me in and raised me, befriending me when I was an adult. I asked why he never told me, and he said it was because he knew I would leave. He was right." Bee thought over the initial fury that she had held towards Jay, which had mellowed into a pity.
"Talking to Jay helped me realize a lot of things. I know that life isn't for me anymore, that I don't want to be like Jay, lying to avoid facing the consequences. I know I need to let go of my anger and fear and face things, which is why I came back as well. Springclan, and you in particular, are the kind of cat I want to be. Honorable and true and kind. So I'm ready to join, fully, and take on a warrior name."
Hearing his new name roll off Bee's tongue brought a conflict of emotions. Though it was nice to hear the she-cat speak his new name, he couldn't help but miss the simpler times, when he was deputy and she a warrior. Her praises caused Thistlestar to grow hot with excitement. The tom was never one to allow compliments to get to his head, but it was always different when it came from Bee; he was pleasantly surprised that she still had that power over him, even after so many moons apart from each other...
Thistlestar listened carefully, the anger that arose at the mention of Jay slowly melted as his neutral mind sought to understand the situation with the new perspective, though a small part of him still internally bristled at the thought of the rouge. The conversation turned, taking Thistlestar by surprise as he began to warm up again at Bee's words, his gaze softening as his mild temper faded away. "I'm proud of you Bee." He finally spoke, nudging her softly with his nose, taking the opportunity to nuzzle her before pulling away "I am so glad you are back..."
"I'm glad to be back," Bee let herself melt into his touch, faintly proud of herself for everything she had gone through in the last few months. There was a part of her that would also hold anger towards Jay for lying to her, but the larger part of her mind was more mature, knowing that her parents hadn't been much better, that the life Jay led required deception and control. There was a deep peace at the moment, with the knowledge of who she wanted to be and knowing that she would be in a group that she trusted, under a leader she respected.
"So... what comes next?" She asked, whiskers twitching in faint amusement. Bee had never been in love before, hadn't seen a relationship modeled, hadn't been a full member of a clan. All of this was new, and slightly overwhelming despite being a positive thing.
"How about... we take it day by day." Thistlestar offered gently, his green orbs softening as he took in Bee's honey gaze. Planning, plotting and preparing came instinctively to Thistlestar his whole life. Nothing was said or done without heavy consideration and deep thought. This though was different. Thistlestar just wanted to be there. He didn't care in what regard, through what situation, for however long. He didn't need to plan this out. He knew what he wanted, regardless of what it would need to take to get it and it was Bee. "Let's go home."
"Home sounds good to me," she said with a growing smile. It was nice to think of Springclan as a home. It was a concept wholly unfamiliar to her, as every part of her life before joining the group had seemed so impermanent and temporary. It was nice to know that it would settle into consistency now. That she would have a home, a group to truly belong to, friends, and Thistlestar alongside her. She stood, stretching out her tired limbs before she began moving in the direction of camp.
