HEAD QUARTERS circa. daybreak
GUIDER LAKOTA
PLOT STATUS: currently speaking to
Commander Mars about her proposal
One foot after another, she walked across the wide bridge. Lakota walked steadily. Her pace foretold that she was on a mission but wasn't trying to run head-first into it. Her eyes were indeed filled with new ideas and things she needed to verbalize, but they still seemed to be searching for the best words to describe them as she neared the cluster of stone-teeth. The other side of the bridge held her Commander's den, and she sauntered straight for the foot of Pride Rock to reach it. It was a long walk, for as wide as Head Quarters was, it could fit perhaps every cat in the forest.
All of this earth felt like home to them, and these interconnected caverns exist throughout every part of the forest, both east and west of the mountains. Nobody knows these tunnels completely; No, not even The Regiment itself could tame the shadows, but RR's duel bladed sword has kept them alive for decades. Where there is a will, there is always a way. The Blind Protector has guided us through fire, through betrayal, through illness. She thought patiently to herself. But we have made too many mistakes.
Lakota rounded the corner and came up to the mouth of the den. "Commander Mars." She addressed him firmly and directly, without chatter. Being raised in Post Alpha made you into a straightforward type of cat. Her eyes had not yet adjusted to the greenish darkness, and the air was cold enough to billow clouds from her nostrils, so she squinted to see through them and fixated her blue eyes on the shadows.
Mars had found a rare moment to himself. Since he'd been promoted to Commander, it seemed like there was always something to be done. Someone always needed him. Every time he turned around, he was being pulled away to do something else. Helping the Regime to recover after the illness that had killed over half of their soldiers meant soothing their fears and helping his cats to grow strong again." This was what was going through his head at the moment. Or at least it was until he heard Lakota. His ears perked as he turned green eyes towards her. "Yes? What can I help you with Lakota?"

She was relieved that he was actually there for once. Lakota had pursued him yesterday night, but didn't have the luck like she had now. "Commander," Blue eyes leveled with his green, and she took a few more steps into the den before seating herself calmly. After straightening her back and taking a shaky breath, she mewed, "I am worried. I am worried about our tykes, our home, and our future." Squinting, she continued, "I came here to propose a new course of action."
Never the one to wait, she didn't hesitate to continue. "Our soldiers need to be placed in squadrons, Commander. Yes, we have unity... But not enough of it. Last night, a fight broke out between a scout and a mercenary." She frowned and had to scrunch her nose to finish the thought, "They do not appreciate each other because they do not understand the importance of one another." Closing her eyes, she fought with her feeling of foreboding. "These squads need to have one Guider, one Raiser, one Mercenary, one Scout, and one Cadet for all of them to teach." When she opened her eyes once again, the steady gaze she gave him embodied how firm she believed in her conviction. "It is necessary. This way, they will learn to accept one another."
Whiskers twitching, face serious, she awaited his response in anxiety. Her future depended on her Commander's decisions, and though she didn't particularly like the answer she came up with because it meant she'd have to partake in it too, this idea was the only way she saw fit to deal with the growing hostilities between posts.
Mars listened quietly while Lakota explained her idea. After she had finished, he remained silent for a few more minutes as he thought on this idea. Finally, he looked back at her, his green eyes giving nothing away. "It is a good idea, but I don't think binding everyone to the same group of soldiers every day is the answer. How will they get to know each other if they are bound to the same cats day in and day out? I believe things are fine as they are but I thank you for your insight." It was a good idea, but he just didn't see how it would help his soldiers so for now, it was not something he wanted to do. He'd much rather let things continue as they had been since no problems had come up thus far.

Lakota began to interrupt halfway through, but had to quiet herself out of respect for her superior. After she let him finish, she immediately chastised him. Admittedly, she already had pent up aggression for Mars after he promoted her brother Limavady. For now, she was trying to put those jealous feelings aside, but the attitude still leaked into her tone. "Our soldiers are bound to the same groups, Commander. Isn't that obvious? If our soldiers are keeping to their posts, we need to figure something out so that they don't hole up and estrange themselves from the others. Can't you see that?" Her brow was furrowed now and her furs were puffed out from her irritation. She accidentally let a growl slip, "Something must be done."
"From what I have seen, our soldiers intermingle well enough on their own. Mercenaries and scouts escort the guiders and Raisers when they need to go about ground and there is always at least one mercenary on a hunting patrol just in case they run into trouble. Friendships extend throughout the tunnels without the need for such stringent rules." Mars knew she was upset, it wasn't exactly hard to tell, but he wasn't going to change his mind either. "Your concern is admirable, but at the moment I believe we are fine."

Quietly this time, she sat perfectly still upon hearing his response. Her eyes seemed to analyze his face, as if to search his pupils for any ounce of sense left in him. Lakota couldn't believe what she was hearing. Where there is darkness anywhere, it is a threat to greatness everywhere. The idiom echoed in her mind. If one fight happened, there were bound to be more, but she was too busy becoming angrier to put it into words. Instead of expressing further about the need for more unity, she lashed her tail and grit her teeth. "You will watch your idleness drag your paws, Commander Mars." Lakota admonished him curtly. Outspoken and straightforward are two of her adjectives. Her icy blue glare embodied her dissatisfaction. Then, as per protocol, she respectfully bowed her head and waited to be dismissed.
For a minute a flash of irritation could be seen in his eyes, but he was quick to compose himself. It was probably better to dismiss her rather than provoke a fight. It would only lead to trouble after all so he simply nodded. "You are dismissed Lakota." He had regained his composure by this point and was sitting there watching Lakota with unblinking eyes.

Ruffled, she turned to leave. Her tail lashed as she walked back out into the dim, green light. Mercenary Leviathan was walking up the steps as she went, and he smiled to his sister. "Hey Kota, are you--" She cut him off with a hiss, "Move it, hairball!" and then walked faster past him. His yellow eyes looked after her, and he watched her hair spike along her spine. A confused expression crossed his face, and he looked into the den at Commander Mars.
Mars shook his head when he spotted Leviathan. He was used to foul tempers thanks to his sister Diana, but it was never a pleasant experience. He stood after a moment and walked towards the other tom. "Was there something I could help you with?" Honestly he didn't feel like dealing with anymore disruptions at this point, but he would hear him out if he needed to speak with him.

It seemed that Mars and Levi had nearly the same level of tolerance. Levi sighed and apologized on behalf of his sister, and then commented, "I wouldn't ask her for any favors anytime soon, but she'll get over it eventually." He chuckled lightly, but in the back of his mind, he was worried that she wouldn't. It wasn't uncommon for Lakota to be a hard pill to swallow, but her bristled fur and outburst seemed more haughty than usual. He wondered what they could have possibly argued over, but chose to nevermind the situation since Mars appeared tired of it.
Instead, he continued with, "I wanted to invite you to Post Alpha!" He smiled widely. He always had a wide grin to his features. "A couple of the guys wanna wrestle and bet mice over it, but if you're too busy I get it." He tipped his head forward as if to come off more charming. "It'll be fun. What do ya say?"
Mars shook his head. "I could always use a break, and a good laugh." He could still remember days he spent with the other mercenaries goofing off and just having fun after duties were done for the day. Things had changed a bit since he had become Commander so perhaps this would be a good way to catch up with everyone.

In his excitement, Leviathan would laugh jovially, "Swell!" His shoulders set his chest forward as he chuckled and he flicked his tail as if to checkmark something off of his to-do list. "I bet Limavady that he couldn't catch 15 mice in a day. I said, if he could do it, I'd give him all my crow skeletons. But he couldn't, so now I've got a whole eight mice to barter with tonight." He laughed even more. Then, smoothly, "But hey, I'll be nice. You can have four."
This drew a laugh out of Mars. "You're too kind...But how did you manage ti get Limavady to go along with your bet?" He kept pace with Leviathan as they spoke. Honestly this was the first time Mars had actually had time to relax since Fjord had stepped down. Perhaps things were actually going to get better even if he had managed to upset Lakota this evening. Then again, that might not actually be that difficult.

"He's a sucker for bragging rights. That's all." He snickered. Leviathan kept his paws away from the edge as they left the mound and crossed the earthy bridge toward Post Alpha. It was an intimidating drop into nothing but darkness and mist. He always felt safe as soon as he reached the other side. They walked along the caverns, passing by rock formations of all shapes and sizes, avoiding a boulder here and there.
"Fair enough I suppose. I wish I could have seen his reaction at the end of it all though." He had fallen behind Leviathan to cross the bridge, but moved to catch up to him once more after they had crossed it. If he was lucky, Diana would stay in Post Kilo this evening and not get onto him for being so casual with the mercenaries. He needed a bit of time to relax now that everything seemed to be settling down after Fjord stepped down.
