"Oh, are that what they're called?" Crowflight asked. He reached down and tentatively touched one of the smaller pink ones, drawing his paw back quickly. It felt hard and rough. "Wait there, I'll bring this one to you. But first let me get this seaweed out." He carried the seaweed over to a rock that was on the shoreline and placed them there so they wouldn't get all sand covered. Then he went back out.
In order to get the starfish, he'd have to go underwater. Taking a big breath, he plunged his head in then he carefully scooped his paw under the pink starfish and lifted it to his mouth. With water draining off his fur, he carried it to the shore and set it down. "So, what do you think?"

She peered closer to one, still standing from afar. Oh, those weren't mermaids. Mermaids were like, the bright glittery fish she could occasionally find. "I don't know what that is," she frowned, before taking a few steps into the water, a shiver running down her spine. She was grateful that Crowflight had decided to bring it up to her instead of making her go all the way down into the waters, but even a closer look didn't really clarify what that...thing was.
"I've never seen one of these," she gasped, looking up to the tom with her wide eyes, "do you think it's alive?"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Mar 4, 2022 16:40:14 GMT -5
"Not a mermaid then," Crowflight mewed thoughtfully as he looked down at the pink creature. He patted it tentatively with a front paw then flipped it over. It was hard and spiny. The underneath side had a crease down each leg.
"I don't know," he said to her question about it being alive. "It's as hard as a rock but I don't think it's that. It looks different from rocks. It has a specific shape and there's others just like it where I got this from." He was disappointed the 'fairy' didn't seem to impress Sunpaw. Except from it's color and shape it was very unimpressive. "Maybe I should push it back in the water."

(sorry, had some stuff going on irl!!!)
She peered at it with wide eyes. "I mean it could be a fairy...I've never seen this before," she spoke with a frown. She was sure it was alive, but it did look like a rock....a really fancy rock. "Do you think it could be magical? Or if it's alive, what does it eat? Does it eat seaweed?" Shaking her head, she turned to Crowflight with a chuckle. "I feel like the ocean definitely has some great big monsters out there, don't you think?"
Suddenly, a flash of light in the water caught her eye. "What's that?"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Mar 25, 2022 10:51:55 GMT -5
(Not a problem. I hope everything's okay.)
Crowflight was looking at the star shaped creature as Sunpaw spoke. He too believed it was alive, at least somehow. But what did it eat? It didn't even seem to have a mouth. He flipped it back into the water figuring that's what it liked since water was where he found it in the first place. He so engrossed in what he was doing that he didn't see what Sunpaw had seen. Sensing danger, he looked up quickly but didn't see anything. "Where was it? What did you see?"

(yeah it's all good! I just ended up leaving my job to pursue something else LOL and it was a pretty rough decision but I think I made the right one!)
There was a sort of excitement in Sunpaw that seemed so different from when she was usually in the water. "I don't know," she exclaimed, peering closely, tentatively moving another step forward, "it was shiny, like something just dashed off, you know? It was colourful too, I'm not sure what it is...I thought maybe a fish but it's not like the ones we usually have on the fresh-kill pile, it was like...shiny...does that make sense?"

(Best wishes on your new venture! )
A lot of fish were shiny, at least to Crowflight. He nodded his head in agreement to Sunpaw. "What color was it or did it have many colors?" He peered out across the waves trying to get a glimpse of what she saw. "How big was it? Could you tell? Was it as big as a cat?" A seagull flying overhead called loudly then dived down to land on the shore nearby. A dead fish was it's target.

"It was gold I think!" she chirped brightly, "but it had different colours too...I've never seen one of those before, most of the fish we eat are silver, you know?" She continued to walk through the water, but only where her paws were still visible. She frowned at Crowflight's words. "Are there really fish as big as we are?"

"I don't know," Crowflight meowed, uncertainty showing in his voice. He gave his pelt a shake to hide his discomfort. "Let's just hope not." The sea was still relatively new to the clan. There was much they didn't know about it. "It's so big ..." he mewed as he looked out across the waves. "The sea I mean," he added. Then he looked thoughtful. "You know there's lots of animals bigger than cats on land. Perhaps with the sea being so big, it might have larger creatures too."

A shudder ran down her spine. "Ugh that's why I'm scared of the ocean," she grumbled under her breath, "I swear it's so creepy, like when you're swimming and something just touches your leg? I'm pretty sure whatever's out there is going to eat me alive one day...I mean at least with foxes and all, you can see them! You literally can't see anything in the ocean sometimes especially when you're deeper!"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Apr 8, 2022 15:50:07 GMT -5
"I never really thought about that but you're right," the black and white tom meowed. "I don't mind the water but what cat in their right mind would want to go too far out? If the waves don't drown you maybe something bigger will eat you." He looked at the seagulls feasting on the dead fish farther down the shore then back at the ocean. "The water by the shore should be safe though. I'd thing anything big enough to eat a cat wouldn't be able to come in the shallows, they'd get stuck."

She nodded at that. "I admire the coast guard you know," she admitted, "like the cats who actually go out into the sea and search for treasure and all that? It sounds exhausting and terrifying honestly; can you imagine going all the way out into the ocean and then having to swim back? I heard stories, like...the ocean sometimes drags cats out and they never come back..."
It was weird, admitting all of her fears about the ocean, and suddenly, she felt exposed. Vulnerable even. "Are you scared of anything, Crowflight?"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Apr 11, 2022 16:14:36 GMT -5
He had heard that too but didn't really know to believe it was true or not. Part of him did but the other part thought it was made up to keep adventurous apprentices and/or kits from venturing out into the ocean. Either way, large bodies of water were dangerous places for a cat to be.
"Snakes," Crowflight meowed. "I'm not ashamed to admit I don't like them or being around them. Some are poisonous and can kill you with a single bite before you even know they're even there." He felt a shiver run down his spine and gave his pelt a shake to get rid of it. "I almost stepped on one once when I was an apprentice. It was a green snake laying in green grass. Thankfully it moved before I set my paw down."

Oof, snakes were definitely not her favourite either. "Yeah, I get what you mean," she nodded, "like, I guess it's the same thing, right? You just never know where they are and one wrong step...and you're out of the game, you know? It's just not so nice to be looking everywhere just to avoid something, much easier to just walk where it's safe..."
Though with snakes, there was not much they could do to avoid it other than listening to their familiar sounds. She glanced at the sea once more, its glistening waves twinkling like diamonds, before turning to Crowflight again. "Okay, I think I've had enough of the water," she chuckled, "should we grab some of the seaweed and head towards the other side?"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Apr 12, 2022 17:56:27 GMT -5
He was pleased when Sunpaw changed the subject from snakes. Even talking about them gave him the creeps. If he thought about snakes too much, it would distract him from what he was supposed to be doing. He'd be spending all his focus watching where he put his paws because of the foul creatures instead of looking for prey or whatever task his was charged to do.
"Yeah, me too," Crowflight said before turning to retrieve the seaweed he had already collected. "I just wish we could discover whatever you saw splashing about in the water." He looked out over the ocean to see if he too could catch a glimpse of whatever it was. "Oh well," he sighed after awhile. He picked up the seaweed and waved his tail for Sunpaw to take the lead.

Of course, she still wanted to know what was out there; her eyes were still searching the seas for any sign of the flash of colour. "Yeah me too," she spoke wistfully, as she picked up another piece of seaweed. "I mean, let's keep an eye out for it, we still have the stretch of the beach to go, right?" There were other herbs they could grab on their way too. On the other side of the beach, there was a crop of samphire that could be useful.
"You know, someone said there was an island out in the sea," she commented with a chuckle, "do you think any cats would live out there?"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Apr 21, 2022 18:19:16 GMT -5
"An island, you say?" he mewed as he peered out across the waves. "I think it would be awfully lonely to live on an island, well maybe if it was a small one." He thought more about living on an island, then added, "I would suppose a cat wouldn't go hungry. They could eat fish and such at least. And they might be free from danger from larger predators like badgers and dogs. But I don't think I'd like it though. Wouldn't living there be rather boring after awhile? Eating the same old stuff day after day, being confined to a small area, and not being able to have adventures?"

She nodded at his words, completely agreeing with Crowflight's sentiment. "I'd be tired of only eating fish to be honest," she admitted, "but I'm sure they get pigeons or something too...though I doubt any cat would be able to hunt a seagull by themselves you know? But if they're so far away that we can't see them, they might think they're the only cats out in the world; wouldn't that be weird? To literally be born and raised away from any other cat?"
"I never thought about that before," Crowflight mewed, tipping his head to one side. "It would be totally weird and hard to imagine what it would be like never to know other cats than your own family." His gaze went across the waves again as if he could spot the island. "I'm glad I'm here with lots of cats around me, even if some are enemies."
He then turned his attention back to the task at paw. "Is this the seaweed what you want?" he asked as he drew some out of the water with his paw.

She nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it'd just feel lonely, you know?" she sighed, as her eyes brightened at the seaweed Crowflight picked up. "Oh yeah, that's the one," she nodded approvingly as she moved past him to claw some off the stems as well, her practiced flicks timed in quick succession. "Do you still have a lot of family in SummerClan?" she asked casually.
