Mars sighed as he finally sat down. It had been a very long day for the mercenary superior. It still felt odd that he no longer had to go to post kilo ever day to visit his tykes. They were grown now and working to improve the regime each in their own way. He missed the days when they were little though. There had always been something going on and now most days he completed his duties and then retired to bed for the day or went for a walk. Today he was just sitting by himself eating a vole. After a moment he let out a quiet sigh.
Punk had been padding by with a mouse in her jaws when she heard Mars sigh. The small black she-cat stopped and fixed her gaze onto him, truthfully she had never had much conversation with the mercenary superior unless it was discussing patrols or any other matter of importance within the regime. She wasn't particularly good at conversation so she tended to avoid it most of the time. She dropped her mouse and settled down next to it, facing Mars. "Is something wrong?" She asked slightly awkwardly, not entirely sure how to begin a normal conversation.
His ears perked when he heard a new voice and he looked up to see that Punk was now sitting beside him. Not wanting to vent his worries he offered her his usual smile. "Not really. I suppose things have just been a bit slow here lately. It's nice for things to be peaceful though." He took another bite from his vole. "Maybe I just need to go out with Diana again. I'm sure she'll find something to yell at me about..." His voice was thoughtful. While it might sound surprising, he was used to his littermate's outbursts and found them to be more amusing than anything else. "How have you been though?"

In the distance, a tomcat of greying fur stood upon a hill, overlooking the western side of The Mountains. The wind ruffled the tufts of his pelt softly. Two younger tomcats come up around his side, one who's white pelt was splattered with orange and the other of brindle. The elder, burly tom pressed on. He must move along, or else it would get dark before the tick of his tail.
Punk pondered his response before replying. "The peace has been nice, although it gets boring sometimes-when it's too peaceful." she meowed. "But I've been... bored." she added, and now that she thought about it, life had been pretty boring recently with nothing of interest happening on border patrols.
"I may go for a walk here soon. It would be good to get out of the tunnels for a bit." He finished up the last bit of his vole and stood. "Would you care to join me?" He hadn't had much time to speak with Punk. Perhaps this would be a good time to get to know her.
"If we're lucky, maybe we'll get to see the sun set. It's always a pretty sight. He stood up and took a moment to stretch before looking back over at Punk. "Well then, shall we go?" It would be nice to have a bit of company really and he did like to get to know the other members of the Regime so this would work out well for him. "Not many of our groupmates enjoy being above ground. Usually if Diana isn't around to go with me, I have to go on walks by myself." Of course his sister wasn't the most pleasant person in the world, but being around her was still better than being alone all the time.
"Of course!" Punk responded, rising to her paws. Compared to most of her group mates the tiny black she-cat spent a lot of time above ground. It didn't particularly bother her much, she quite enjoyed being comfortable in both settings. "I've shared a few words with Diana, she seems friendly but I wouldn't want to be on her bad side." Punk added, twitching her whiskers in amusement.
"It depends on her mood really. Of course she's been very grumpy here lately since she's still in Post Kilo with her tykes, but she'll cheer up eventually." He knew his sister loved her tykes. She just wasn't used to being cooped up in one spot. It didn't take him long to reach the surface and when he did, he looked up towards the sky. "We're in luck. The sun hasn't set yet. If you'll come with me, I can show you the perfect place to watch the sunset. He'd taken his sister Venus there once before and he'd tried to get Diana to go, but she'd just told him that she was too busy to bother with him.
"That makes sense, I'm not sure I'd stay sane if I spent all my time in one place for so long." she said, understandingly. Punk blinked several times, her eyes adjusting to the lighting change, for the most part when she was above ground it was dark outside, she embraced the dark as it allowed her to hide so well. "That sounds nice, I feel like I haven't seen the sun in quite some time." she said.
"There's a stream not to far from here that runs over a large hill." He set a slow pace, wanting to enjoy the cool evening. "Most would say it's pointless to come out here just to watch the sunset, but honestly, it's always nice to make time to relax." Mars had always been a bit more relaxed than most mercenary superiors. He'd never seen a reason to be so strict or unforgiving when you got more out of soldiers that trusted you.
"Making time for oneself and setting aside some time to relax are actually very important parts of life, it took me much longer than it should have to learn that - but hey! at least I figured it out!" Punk replied in an amused purr. "It's surprising how much just a little relaxation time can actually improve one's mood and outlook on a lot of things in life." she added.
Mars slowed his pace as they neared the hill. It was nice out tonight. There was a cool breeze that kept it from getting too hot and the sound of the river was actually pretty relaxing. "It looks like we're here." It was pretty quiet out, but the only other cats that might be out this late were the scouts and he doubted they'd bother them since they would be more focused on hunting. He sat down by the river and wrapped his tail neatly around his paws. "It looks like we made it just in time too. The sun will be setting soon."
Punk took in her surroundings. She never really gave this part of the territory much thought and she was now wondering why that was. She found the sound of the river below them to be very peaceful. Her gaze landed on a moth that fluttered lazily on by. "Now I'm wondering why I didn't visit this place before. I truthfully have never given this place so much as a second thought." She said quietly, almost afraid to disturb the peace she was currently surrounded by. She walked up to the edge of the hill and sat down and stared down to the river below and then glanced back up at the sky.
"You'd be surprised at what you find if you just stop and look around you every once in a while. It's hard at times because we are always so busy, but I do try to look around every once in a while." The black tom stretched. "This is a good place to catch fish if you know how as well." Of course he didn't know how. He know a bit about hunting from his time away from the Regime, but he'd actually heard about the fish from his sister who did know how to fish.
Punk shook her head. "I don't know how to fish as I'd much prefer not to get my paws wet." She said with a twitch of her whiskers. She glanced down at the river again, she could see the occasional flash of silver scales darting by if the light hit them just right, it was tempting to try and catch one. She turned her gaze back up and watched as the fiery orange sun sunk lower and lower in the red and yellow streaked sky.
This drew a laugh out of Mars. "I don't know of many who would honestly. I know a few that know how to fish." As the sun sunk lower on the horizon, he yawned. "I honestly remember times when I would sit out here with Jasmine, Basil, and Coriander when they were very little. Then Venus would get onto me for taking them out so late." He grinned. He really didn't mind sharing family stories with his fellow Regime members. He was proud of his family and especially proud of his tykes so more often than not he would mention them at least once.
Punk smiled in response. "Honestly though, when the tykes look back on their life, the nights they got to stay out late are going to be some of the best memories!" she responded, thinking back fondly on some of her days as a young cat, even though the good days were few and far between.
"Honestly, it's hard telling what they think of it now. They are all so busy with their own duties. Sometimes I do wish they were still tykes in Post Kilo with Venus." He shook his head as he said this. His sister had done an excellent job in helping him to raise Basil, Coriander, and Jasmine. They had all turned into fine soldiers in their own respect. Sure Basil was a bit difficult, but he truly meant well when it came down to it. He just needed a bit more guidance.
